I have often read that sweetcorn is a bait that is eaten even at low temperatures. Do any of you know if it is the same with maize and have you had success using it in the winter? I have used lots of maize spring, summer and autumn but I have never used it to prebait in winter.

Used it loads for pre bait in winter and quite often have them passing it on the mat in - conditions. And 20k £9 it's a cheap way to do it

It can be a good bait in winter!

Juist cook \prepare it well. In winter I cooked maize for 45 minutes so some grains start even to burst and releases the starch in the water.

IMO maize isn't anywhere near as good as sweetcorn. I only ever use it for hookbaits when needed, much preferring cheap Lidl tinned corn every time. I dont rate the freezer bags of corn either, got to be the tins

Yes, it works fine in the winter though I do prefer sweetcorn.

I'd agree something about sweetcorn versus maize. I dont think there's much difference between the frozen and tinned and at a pound a kg its as cheap as bulk maize without the boiling hassle.

I think sweetcorn is more attractive, however if silvers are in the lake then maize does deter them a bit more compared to sweetcorn.

Sweet corn is just added salt and sugar to the corn, I add a lot of sugar and salt to my maize I make and it out does tinned sweet corn every time.

Also maize is sweet corn just harvested later.

Not exactly true. Sweet corn is maize, but maize isn't always sweet corn. There are many types of maize, some of which is harvested early as sweet corn. Sweet corn is much higher in sugar than field maize. But the sugar in sweet corn is not the same as you will be adding to your maize.

I sound like the bloody riddler..

not even maize is maize, there are many many variations of maize out there and some are better than others but in general i also prefer sweetcorn in winter but do have to say that the ones in glass jars (expensive ones) worked always the best for me.

If you time it correctly and the maize is just starting to get that sweet alcoholic smell then it's deadly all year round.

Agreed, the trouble is that that window of perfection is quite small before it turns horrid. What I like to do is when it gets to that point just add some salt to stop the ferment and keep that lovely smell for a much longer period of time..

Thanks for your input. I think I'll keep the maize in my prebaiting mix and add some sweetcorn too into the winter and see how it works out.
