Seen a few posts re Angling Trust and waiting what they say , just a reminder , they are a CHARITY not an angling authority , its a bit like asking Oxfam to sort out the war in Iraq.
Personally i think they are confusing every man and his dog , a lot of carpers aint the brightest star in the sky (joke) butt out i say.

The ACA was a formidable organisation, funded by anglers to protect our environments for our sport. It would routinely hold the EA and its earlier emanations to account culminating on the excellent work it did on the Trent at Sawley. The EA was beaten and rightly humiliated and rather it happen again, they used anglers money from rod licences to fund the ACA. The ACA was dissolved into The Angling Trust and Fish Legal limped from the ashes. As anglers we are not independently represented by the Angling Trust and rivers are certainly not protected by Fish Legal. I would counsel anyone to keep their money.

Agreed but many on here listen and worse quote them rather than read what the government have actually implemented.

Most have probably never heard of the angling trust before all this.
You are spot on they are just creating confusion with their own guidelines.
We should only listen to the governments instruction, not the angling trust, not dave off facebook, not your wives sisters brother cat.
The governments instructions are not confusing, people get confused when they listen to the media and randoms off social media speculating constantly

Sawley Wier, I recall. My home turf in the late seventies to late eighties. What a fishery it was then.

They have been promoted by the angling press & media as the “spokesgroup” for angling since they were formed by merging the NFA & ACA (& some other smaller organisations). They have put out video's & proposals that been given to Government yet those in the video & the information being given by the Trust themselves do not match! The Trust say to wait for clarification that they expect to be given on 13th May on whether you have to return home at night or not, yet there is still Ali Hamidi telling people that they can still go night fishing regardless. It is in these situations where everybody should be sticking together instead of looking for ‘loopholes' claiming “bivvy's are not tents”(
) & “it isn't camping” (when sleeping under a temporary structure is the literal definition of camping!).
At the end of the days we all want to go fishing - be it spending the night alongside the venue or not - and we should be singing off same hymn sheet (which is not going to happen when there is not one actual true governing body for angling even though the Angling Trust is the closest we have got at the moment or if people are just going to search out loopholes to suit them - we all know that anglers will pull strokes whenever they think they can get away with it regardless)

I was a member for years but I cancelled that membership after they spent my money on a 7 month long campaign to convict Myles Gibson.
The information they've been giving out this last few days has been a complete shambles. Of course they're only trying to help but you need to wait until you know the score before spreading this kind of info.

Ive recently joined The Angling Trust for the first time as its the only body that represents angling at government level. Ive been fishing for nearly 50 years now and angling has always suffered from splinter groups and bickering as no one can agree on a joined up approach. If all anglers were prepared to put their hands in their pockets and support one governing body then we would have a stronger professional leadership and be in a much stronger position. Unfortunately that isn't ever going to happen as this thread will demonstrate.

I'm sure the Angling Trust do not think otters are a threat to fishing
The problem came about yesterday with the pedantic questioning from them once fishing was given the go ahead. I would'nt be surprised if they questioned whether gas camping cookers could be used by fishing as camping is still banned.

To be fair to the Trust, it was more the ridiculous response (imo) of people seeing on thing elsewhere about camping, then having heard through a mate and decided fishing was included in that and specifically asking the AT to clarify.
The document released by the government mentioned nothing about it, but seems no one bothered to actually read that and drew their own conclusions based on some comments in the media, what their mates said or comments on social media that actually weren't based on what the government document had outlined.
they (AT) have been working throughout yesterday and into the night, with (i think) support of some MPs to get the wording clarified slightly to enable fishing overnight to be allowed - as per their press release on Facebook today where government lawyers have confirmed they received their recommendations.
In the interest of full clarity, i am very good friends with some of the people at the trust. i know how hard they have been working on this (not actually seeing their kids despite working from home, eating all meals in front of the computer to try and get angling fair representation).
I can absolutely guarantee that they are trying to act in the best interest of all anglers. there are so many different views within angling (and it seems carp anglers are particularly strong minded) that of course it is impossible to make everyone happy.
Some of the abuse directed at them yesterday was in excusable though. They are trying to get angling a good, fair deal and in my view have generally achieved that. of course there are more important things going on at the moment, but thats their role.
Whether or not you like it, they are the closest thing to a central body to represent angling. Angling can often be its own worst enemy in my view (and of course everyone is entitled to their view), but so often anglers complain about things without actually doing anything about it.

Exactly. Not exactly keen on giving money to an organisation who use that money to seek conviction and hamper the future of one of our own, for doing what 90% of anglers would do or have done.

Don't think it is the work they are doing on this issue being challenged, it is the way it has been communicated which has left many people confused. Add to this that they spoke about UK but us in Wales are still under lockdown, or are we based on the latest communication I saw from AT on this subject last night? I think they needed to take stock and get all their ducks in a row before making any official announcement as at the moment they have made themselves look naïve and foolish when in all honesty they have the best interest of anglers at heart in this matter (please note I am voicing opinion on this issue not the bigger topic of what the AT do for anglers in general)

I don't have time for the AT but when one of "our own" makes a public admission about poaching we can hardly support him and complain about fish thefts from poachers ourselves.
Is it ok if I take someones car for a spin without permission as long as I return it intact?

Yeah I don't disagree mate.
We've all done the right/wrong discussion back in 2015, I don't think we need to go there again.
My choice to cancel membership was not because I thought Myles was hard done by. It was because of the way the AT ploughed so much into convicting a guy that returned the fish vs. guys that do not. Imo it was solely for publicity, an easy win, a "named" angler, and a spot on the BBC news. Not what I was paying for.
