Never made my own boilies but now that there is no fishing I had the idea of giving it a go. But is it cost effective by the time you have bought eveything or is it cheaper just to buy 5kg from a supplier when needed?

It depends what you value your time at. Bait can of course be made cheaper than off-the-shelf but the cost of the time it takes to make it is way underestimated by many. It's a labour of love imo.

How much Value you put on your time to roll them
When rolling small amounts like 5kilo.

Best benefit is you would know what has gone into the bait
The equipment needed Is minimal And you don't actually need rolling tables and bits like that it just makes it quicker and easier.

Mine costs about £4 kg, plus my time to make it which isn't long at all. Plus I can make whatever size I want, and dumbells too so it's better imo than having to butly bulk bags of singles sizes or shape. The costs start going up when you use fishing branded things like flavours and the various powders companies sell. The supermarkets have some imo better additives for way less money imo

It also depends on how much you make and whether you can take advantage of bulk discounts

I used to roll 200KG a season there were 4 of us using the bait, we made a really good bait for £3 because with those volumes we could buy ingredients at a really good price

Now I only roll for myself I buy well known pre mixed base mixes but still make it for £4.25 a kilo
I am fortunate to have a rolling machine and all the other gear to make it quickly.

I'm just starting to roll my own again after having a break, mainly to give myself something to do. Ingredients arrived yesterday for a fishmeal bait I've put together including krill and pdf. Got 27.5kg of ingredients for just over £3 a kilo which includes whole egg powder so even with some decent liquids I'll be making bait for less than £4 a kilo. Check out AA Baits. I ordered on Wednesday and it arrived Thursday. Only £7 postage up to 30kg in weight! It's worth the hassle imo as you can make your own unique bait.

Have you tried their krill meal? Usually use feedstim for my ingredients but they no longer sell it. Maybe the shortage of krill products means that they see the stuff available now isn't worth selling?
