My local lake is literally half a mile away and I've just been doing one day session a week. I managed to bag my first fish of the year today in the snow a small common of 18lbs. Although I'm missing my night fishing I'm quite enjoying these day sessions at the moment. When I set off this morning I was not very confident at all with conditions being what they are especially when I got to the lake and a large chunk of it was frozen but once the sun got up it was very nice on the back of the wind with the sun beating down on me and I had the added bonus of having the lake to myself all day as well.

Local has not been defined, it has been down to police discretion to decide what is local, and not all forces are using the same definition. You can google it, there is no definition. On the gov.uk website the definition is ambiguous, and you can travel to access an open space, (or in our case fishery).
It has not been helped by Boris Johnson cycling across from Westminster SW1 2AA to E20, East End of London to the Olympic park, some 7 miles. He does have closer parks to cycle round, St. James and Hyde Park are closer. Add to that, the personal security protection that went with him...
On a local dog walk, I can go through IP1, IP2, IP3, IP4, IP8 and IP9, that is 6 postcode regions or districts within 4 miles of my home.
If I google Ipswich area, I get a map come up, Hadleigh on the West side, Woodbridge/Deben river valley on the East, Wherstead on the South, going up to Akenham on the North. That is an area around 30miles across and 15miles top to bottom.

Just engage brain and apply common sense ie if stopped by the police, do you have a reason that most of us would see as reasonable or not.
Those that say local is not not defined are simply looking to break the rules and hide behind excuses and others.

To name but two... Dominic Cummings and Neil Ferguson... Do as I say, not as I do... Good enough for the goose, then good enough for gander... To expect the public to apply common sense to what is “local” when those making the rules break them with such impunity, and suffering little to zero punishment as a consequence, simply reinforces the “them and us” culture to which we are all now used to... Little wonder there is so much confusion, frustration, anger and downright indignance towards this situation... Personally, I make my own rules upon what is safe, what is right for my family, and what is the correct thing to do... I haven't fished for many weeks now, but that is my own choice, and that of those who run the waters I am lucky enough to have the invite to fish, not that of some draconian law maker (read: breaker) in Westminster... 🤬

I'm sorry I don't agree with that.
Many people, NOT just anglers want to know the definition of local, i.e. a set distance, how many miles they can travel, and consistency across the country. When one police force is fining people for 5 miles, yet others are using longer distances.

We have become split, by the government, not just over whether lockdown is right or wrong, but over Brexit as well. Divide and conquer used by the government, then those in government break their own rules, and again, not just over lockdown.
Using draconian punishments on minimal offences, when serious crimes go lightly punished. 10 years for not quarantining, when rapists, murderers get less! A £10,000 fine when a burglar or shoplifter gets £250.
We have gotten to the state where the people of the UK have had their freedoms eroded. Not just gradually, but a major storm.
Use common sense? We do. Science has said that outdoors is the least likely place to pass on coronavirus, less likely than in your supermarket. Yet it is outdoor pursuits that have been curtailed, golf, totally stopped, fishing limited.
That is not common sense from the government.
Add to that for many, available fisheries. Not everyone right now can afford a day ticket water at £10 a day, some are still closed, or even fisheries are iced over, so would have to travel further afield. Not everyone has a river within 5 or even 10 miles, or they simply don't know how to fish a river.
Right now on Saturday, it is well below freezing, common sense tells me I don't want to be night fishing, yet come Monday with the weather forecast...

Although I agree with the point in general, I don't think boris' bike ride is a very good example, 7 miles isn't even a warm up for most, and cycling in hyde/St James Park is a pretty ridiculous notion. You don't have to look far for a better example tho

The irony is these people wouldn't be going anyway at this time of year if everything was normal. The vast majority only want to go because they're sat at home on furlough, but if it wasn't for this sh1te they wouldn't have all the free time anyway.

Most folk cycle on their own and during the day - though I do agree they should stay local - if you have an accident you could end up in hospital in another county not the place anyone wants to be.
We keep going off topic here. What is the title of this thread ? please read before posting....and sprouting all sorts because we can't night fishing.
This also says to me those arguing are the ones likely to bend the rules by applying their own interpretation.
And as said let's be honest it's a minority who fish at the moment, a lot of lakes have a lid on them, the rivers are flooded.
The problem with night fishing and we've all seen in in previous lockdowns where we've been able to fish overnight - folk are using it as an opportunity to drink & mix under the cover of darkness with social distancing going out the window all crowded together in one swim - which provides the possibility of transmission - so the argument that your outside does not stand in this scenario.
Those that break the rules are just damaging our sport and deserve to have the book thrown at them, they are not anglers they are something else which starts with the ‘a' word.

I can only assume you don't cycle and don't know London very well. He'd be better off cycling up and down downing street.

A fitness ride for anyone with a modicum of fitness would be well in excess of 25 miles, and considering the state he was in 10 months ago I don't blame him for heading away from the central London air to give his legs and lungs a workout.
There's plenty to complain about, what him and others get up too, but the fuss in this case is pretty daft

What everyone that wants to bend the rules needs is a van. I've circumnavigated the m25, zig zagged about within it and ventured miles beyond it all year unchallenged.

In today's paper: Number 10 sources also confirmed recreational outside sports like golf and tennis will start to be allowed from next month, probably with just one other person. One senior source said that “outdoor sports ... is quite likely to relax in March”.

Vans are brilliant for getting away with things. Park up on double yellows with the hazards on outside a shop, hi viz and a clipboard and no one bats an eyelid. Of course only when no other parking spaces are available
