You are quite right. I have seen others copy this and cringe.
Unless it's an exceptionally deep and soft mat, and the carp isn't excessively gutty, then it really shouldn't be done.
There is no need for it, and only serves the purpose of adding some "drama" to his films!

All those pics back in the day - never did any of those carp any harm 🤷🏻♀️
It's great that carp care has come on leaps and bounds, but we used to put fish down on a bit of grass (if they were lucky!) and they did ok. Carp are a very hardy species.....

Off course he is not unchallengeable, yes what you post is correct , in my opinion there are many anglers around the globe that are better then him , they just do not have the big name and probably don't want it.

Local to me, pen ponds, and its a decent video
Two points to note imo, he questioned where the royal 40 originated from....really? An old mate moved a few fish into the ponds when barn elms was lost to angling, and secondly, he mentioned having a 'bird'...

Always great to listen to el Tel - still the guru IMO. What was more disturbing was his barnet - totally get embracing the grey (we are the same age) but its either a syrup or he needs a decent barber . . .he also needs to move out of his nans house . . .

Dont think he's in his yard to long to worry about the decor... 
Secondly he ditched the grecian 2000 a while back. Long grey hair ain't really a thing..
And lastly he no doubt realised early on having a bird in tow for to long. Wasn't really conducive to catching big carp regularly...

Not going to get into the 'no bird' convo - I'm too mortal and he's too pure an angling god to make judgment on . . .however goat or not, this is prob not helped by his 70's school cut and nan with dementia style bachelor pad . . .
