Well i never... round my neck of the woods. If you were rocking one of them bankside back in the day you were deemed a bit to " serious " and given a wide birth that along with anything remotely camo..

I find them far too itchy wherever they contact the skin. Odd really as I spent a couple of years as a child in Shetland and was never out of the white coarse jumpers they wear over there.
Roll forward to 1990 we went to Romania and I bought one of the Shepherds jumpers, couldn't stand the thing.
Incredibly warm but not for me.

It's a shame really because wool is a natural "wonder" fabric. Thermo-regulating, works when wet, odor resistant, breathable, moisture wicking, sustainable & biodegradable etc.
I do agree though, some wools can be itchy. The type & grade of wool likely also plays a part in the "itch factor".

Tried to buy a maddocks one from surplus place a few years ago - he didn't have one but asked me what it was for - when I said cold weather fishing, he pulled out a horrendous navy one and said if they wear them at sea they'll do me - it is fantastic v neck so not itchy on skin, long rollback sleeves - superb would prefer in green but baby Jesus made the sea blue

I've got an Austrian Dachstien mountain jumper. These are the opposite to most jumpers as they are more tight fitting but made of boiled wool to keep the heat in.
It's too small for me now if anyone is interested?

M&S, got to admit I rarely wear any other jumper in winter that their Merino wool offering, so light, so warm and so easy as a layer. Constantly amazed how they combat odour, I'm often washing them for washings sake, quality stuff.

Helly Hansen base layers are the comfiest I've worn and wear them at work.
