I have used Richworth, Mainline Polaris and BAF pop-up mixes amongst others.

Richworth I do not know if it is still available. Mainline Polaris I found inconsistent, some batches were OK, yet others mixed exactly the same were not.

Last year I tried the BAF pop-up mix, and it does exactly what it is supposed to, pops up.
For a 1egg mix I add 5ml of Rod Hutchinson Megaspice, Shellfish Sense Appeal and 2ml of Verselle Laga Garlic Oil.

The attractor package is one that I have used for years and it does work.

If you need links to the flavour and attractors I can find them for you

Thanks all.
The base mix used works but like I said its not the most bouyant. I also find the secret squirrel hookbaits to be the most bouyant I have come across in my short time dedicated carp angling.

Will give the BAF mix a try and also some corkballs.

Inconsistency seems to be a rather disheartening issue, with most of the current popup mixes available on the market nowadays. Why is that ???

I´ve been rolling all my popups for the last 15 or so years, and never had any issues with Richworths, Mistral Baits and the earlier CCMoores popup mixes, but nowadays, it´s either hit or miss.
I´ve been through bags n bags of different bait company mixes, and the majority have failed, my rigarious testing.
I too use jewellers scales for precise measurements, and temperature controlled simmering, to avoid inconsistency of the final product, but most of the time, i get let down.

Gotta point out, i´m not after any pedantically perfect spheres that stay popped up for weeks, but a drenched 14mm that keeps a size 2 popped up for 48hrs

Oxford Carp Baits Pop ups are the dogs b**lcks!
Hold up size 4's and all metal work for days, even the 12mmers
The Linch Specials are special!
PJp's are also very good but more expensive

I'm gonna be honest here and say that I don't get the fascination with needing pop ups to stay up for four days. It's not hard to make a pop up that would stay up for weeks. But I wouldn't wanna use it as it will be loads of 3M and binders with a bit of flavour chucked in. I'd much rather have a pop up that stays up 24 hours that's not hard as a bullet, that's got a load of soluble ingredients and goes soft cos it's actually leaking out attraction.

Totally agree. I have tried the PJPs and Blake's power lifter type super pop ups and can't get my head round using them. They will hold a huge hook up for however many days and will be just the same as when you cast out, but who wants that? I'd rather my bait was softening up and leaking off like you would want your free baits. The baits I've used that do that use cork.

The more buoyant the pop up is the less inherent food value is actually in it in my view. A corkball would be a great alternative that has actual food value with the buoyancy your after.

its actually very difficult to explain that to customers, I feel like shouting a lot of the time. joe public wants to be able to float a car with a 15mm nowadays

Agreed mozzi, and you can certainly make them very buoyant but at a massive cost to actual food value as you well know. Yet people seem happy to pay certain companies £40 quid for a tub of pop ups when a corkball would catch you more fish throughout the year for 15 quid a pot.

You have missed the point of modern pop ups. They now have real food in them where as before we could only get some liquid flavour in and that was it!
Now, it's possible to get 12mm baits made out of nut meals, fishmeals, milks and any additives we want and the biggest one, hydro liquids! All that in an easy to use 12mm bait that is more buoyant than most 16mm.
I don't like throwing my stuff into other threads but as an example if you eat a 12mm trick nut pop up you can see and taste the actual nut basemix from the boilie recipe in that pop up. Now do you see why I rate them so much compared to a bright pink blank over flavoured with maple. We can bridge the gap between a real boilie and one that keeps your rig up for 24 hours!

I find myself using wafters more than pop ups these days. I genuinely don't think have there rigs with more rings that Mr T are actually necessary

I completely get what your saying gav. We want to get as much fishmeal/milks/hydros in as possible to give it actual food value while remaining buoyant enough for the job. You can source a base mix and add a certain percentage of milks/ fishmeal/ hydros weight it all out etc. or you can just mould some paste around a corkball and it's done. Why mess around trying to add more food value into a standard pop up whilst retaining buoyancy when we have had the answer for years a corkball. The only reason we are still using standard pop ups Is because it's not commercially viable for most companies to mass produce corkball pop ups. So we have resulted to trying to mass produce a bait that preforms like a corkball without the hassle.

I used the richworth fishmeal mix for quite a few years and found it reliable, Polaris too. As you say, something I have done for a long time, added a few additional “goodies” and they are good for 12 hours and they are larger baits 15mm. Long enough for me though.

I suppose people using 12mms and size 4 hooks with loaded baits need something a bit more special? Air drying for 48 weeks is not the answer

I have tried a few and can't say I am satisfied with any but I have my preferences. A few is all about how they boil too as they distorted awfully, unless simmered, if that bothers people of course

So, who do we think is the best mix available right now based on performance not,

Genuinely interested, tried the proper job ones once quite a few years ago, ridiculously buoyant, OK for zigs!

Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
