Got a spod rod and reel but I'm not getting it to fly great. It's wobbly in the air. I'm trying to cast in a flyid motion with everything straight but 1 out of 5 casts are ok. The spomb is about 3 foot from the rod tip before casting, do I need it longer? Advice welcome!

My advice would be give the spomb a good hard shake downwards so that all of the contents pack into the nose. Makes a big difference to how it flys.

Make sure you have the right amount of bait in the spod and give it a little tap before casting to make sure the bait drops to the head end. Should stop the wobble

Good shout. What about the amount of line out when you cast? It's about 3foot from the tip but I read somewhere it should be longer?

I cast mine with the spomb half way down the rod

Whenever I cast overhead / overarm then have the line dropping to the spigot, e.g. halfway.

go longer with the drop on the rod for sure. 3 foot is very short.

All great tips below. Watch some videos on youtube from Terry Edmonds or similar - the drop should be between the spigot and the eye above.

One very important piece of advice is to check that no one else is sat just out of your line of sight around a corner from your target area. ( especially if you've some short tempered big blokes on the same lake)😀
I've had spods/ spombs and bait boats in my swim only a few metres from where I've been sat.

What I did was take myself off to a local field if you have one, top the spomb up with pellet and use some insulating tape to keep it closed.
Take your wrapping sticks and practise with length of drop and technique, try to make it all as smooth as possible , start at ten wraps and line up with a distant marker . I placed my unhooking mat out and used that to test how accurate I was being.
When you can accurately and consistently hit ten wraps move out 5 and so on until you are where you need to be.
Alone in a field is less pressure, doesn't annoy others, and you don't feel your ruining your fishing by having piles of bait all over the swim .
Like any technique it gets easier the more you do it.

Personally I have the Spomb in line with the spigot when casting, unless I am 'punch' casting it to cut wind veer.
You may also need to lob it if you are casting shorter.
If you use braid, and hit the clip hard you might find the Spomb doesn't always open as it 'flattens' rather than drops nose in.

Yes, I tend to hit the clip with the spomb quite high above the water and let it drop vertically into the water. Makes a lot of noise but makes sure it opens. If I want to be more stealthy I use a spod and lay it on the water makes hardly any noise of you get it right.
