In a recent trip to a new lake, I was 2 days into my session when another member walked into the swim. Got chatting as you do, about spots etc, when he said about a spot that was in a certain direction at 15 wraps out. I asked what that was in yards as I dont wrap, instead preferring to mark my lines and estimate. He couldn't work it out off the top of his head, I was too tired to be bothered, then there was a definite, quiet uncomfortable 30 secs. Am I in the dying breed of line measuring, or just abit unlucky

Once you are fishing a spot, why not just use a power gum marker?

Tbh I like to use wraps all the time it could be 5 wraps or 20wraps I don't care, for me it's about being bang on the spot everytime if not your not going to be on the money every time, Some of my waters if your not on the spot you could be 5 yards to the right and your in 2/3 foot of weed. It's very important part of my fishing

When I said mark my line, that's what i meant, either power gum or tape. In a world of wraps, measuring in yards seem to be more and more uncommon

What happens if the spot is 5.7 (or whatever) wraps? Can't do that accurately every time....

Yes you can, my distance sticks came with a string that runs between the 2 and has three plastics bits that you pull along to each rod, so for example 10 wraps then red, 14 wraps green etc very easy really

tie a power gum stop knot on the cord that comes with the sticks
A wrap is usually 4 yards
10 wraps=40 yards etc

I marker rod, then tape my line to mark for recasting. I have no idea how far 15 wraps is without using my phone calculator as im old school. These kids can spit out these wrap numbers faster than i could type it.

If i have two rods on the same area i might wrap the first rod for reference, then i can wrap and clip up the second.

I will always cast around my marker and drag the bottom with my fishing rod so its getting 'leaded' to check out the subtle softer/harder, choddy areas within the swim.
I like to leave the old hooklength on with a bottom bait so as i drag the bottom i can pick up any straggly bits of weed and be sure how clean the area is.

I just find wraps a lot easier to deal with. If someone said to me there's a nice spot at 84 yards I wouldn't have a clue how far that is to work out without distance sticks. But if someone said there's a spot at 17.5 wraps it's very easy to clip up at that distance

Same if I'm leading around and find a spot, I clip up, wrap out and that's my distance X amount of wraps, god knows how many yards 🤷🏻‍♂️ (Off the top of my head)

I use both. I just convert my wraps to yards. Measure in wraps, talk in yards.

It's 4 yards to a wrap if 12ft

15 wraps is the same as saying 15 rod lengths.

How many wraps to a pub chuck and does it make any difference if its dark?

The poor chap was obviously not that bright if he can't work out a simple equation. I don't think that says a single thing about your breed tbh.

I always used yards used to pace rods out then tie a piece of pole elastic onto the line , but I joined a small water last year and because of the nature of the banks space wise I found it awkward to use my normal way so I decided rather than spend a lot I got some ngt distance sticks got to admit I'm totally converted now much easier and I can store the wraps in my phone to snags/pads made my short sessions so much easier no more casting to the clip letting a bit more line off then pacing out.

I have witnessed a member on a lake I fish not quite understanding his 'fashionable' 10ft rods won't quite be on the spot when asking everyone else how far the spots are, and then proceeding to wrap up with his distance sticks pegged out to his rods and not a 12ft/4 yard rope.
