Anyone else think the continued use of non-recyclable plastic in packaging for items used in carp fishing is particularly poor? You can leave a tackle shop with masses of the stuff and most of it is unnecessary.

Agree, but there are signs of change. I see Thinking Anglers have started using eco-friendly packaging. Shouldn't be long until others follow.

I remember hooks being sold separately for about 1d each. I sort of knew the lad working in the tackle shop, he was a bit of a rogue but would give me dozens of hooks for a few pence. Trouble was the were mainly spade ends and at the age of 9 or 10 I could only attach eyed hooks with Granny knots.
I know that the World is full of light fingered so and so's but I'm certain that much of the tackle could have a demo model on display and you could buy your baiting needle, hooks, leads, swivels etc... from over the counter.
Trouble is Nash and Korda would start charging more for the privilege

Yes.
I have only really seen one bait maker use recyclable packaging (The Carp Catcher I think)
Wasn't Thinking Anglers just using recyclable bags at the show(s) rather than recyclable packaging on their product range?
EDIT:
THINKING ABOUT THE FUTURE

Often thought this - huge amount of wastage in the packaging, practically every item of small end tackle comes in..I see Gardner are starting to sell bulk packs of hooks - 20 per pack. It's a start at least.

Government needs a hard line on it, why leave it up to the businesses to make the change when they could tell them they have to or they will not be allowed to trade in this country any more. Sorts the problem out straight away.

I saw yesterday Rigmarole are going to start using recyclable packaging.Even if other companies followed Gardners lead and started doubling the amount per pack it should reduce waste by half.

I believe there is a levy already in place. I work in the food industry and there is a big push to move to it.
However I am unsure on how it is calculated and suspect in the first incarnation it will be for the big multi national companies.
But agree on to much in carp fishing- especially terminal tackle, by the bigger companies, I bought a load last year in prep for France trip and once I decanted it into a tackle box the left over packaging was unbelievable

The solution is entirely in our hands. If there is ever a chance for fishing to lead the way, this is it. Take a carrier bag into the shop and at the counter, unpack the items and ask the shop assistant to depose of the waste themselves. Buy items not in packaging and tell the assistant why. It wont be long until the big few firms we are familiar with who 'market and package items made in China to their design' to catch on and become environmentally aware overnight.
The packaging isnt for you. Its designed to show off the items in a way that causes it to be attractive to the consumer.
It's simply up to you.

Not sure really, only from the stand point that as a outdoor activity paper packaging won't stand up to the rain that well, as for anything sold in plastic that doesn't stay in it then fair enough.
Plastic packaging needs to be stamped out full stop, the figures associated with Coca Cola are just plain scary :-0

Those who call for Government intervention have yet to under that Westminster has neither the power, control or inclination to become effectively involved. When has anything meaningful ever happened that wasn't lead by the consumer...

The plastic blister pack containing fishing items will be with you until you get home, remove the item from the packaging and discard the packaging into the rubbish. It will then take 500 years to degrade.

That's quite a sound idea
Even if the guy behind the counter only gets to tell the story to others, it will keep people thinking or reminding them of the excess and uneccesary packaging.
Always thought small items like hooks, swivels etc all should be put in PVA bags, once decanted the bag can be used.

100% agree mate.
Biggest challenge is to get the consumer(s) aligned. Coca-Cola wont stop using single use bottles because the vast majority of the consumer base likes them.
Morrison's did the same with food waste - sold wonky ungraded veg - Pulled it after 6 months because no one would buy them.

still sell wonky veg round my way.. however its 10p for a plastic bag and 20p for a paper one. stupid token gestures to pretend they are doing something. make paper bags 5p and plastic 40p and you have actually done something worthwhile.
