I really like these bobbins and have used them for a while but more recently I've broken a number of the chains when picking the rod up on a run. Is this just me or does anyone else have a similar experience?

I use the ESP barrel indicators in acrylic and stainless on MCF bike chains, no chance of breaking those things.

I used the ESP barrel bobbins for a few years and had no issues. This was a while ago now, may have changed manufacture of the chain since then.

I've got both lengths and got them years ago, never let me down, you can order them from Johnson Ross or the bay.

I like to keep my bobbins as light as I can get away with as it aids bite detection
So I have replaced the chains with cord, you can buy it cheaply from eBay in all sorts of colours, and make them whatever length you like.

I had one break at the head. I araldited the next ball back in the plastic. Been ok since.

I don't actually use them , but I remember them being launched don't you swap ends of the chain around to create more weight, or do you mean extra one's beside

I couldn't find any so just used some add on weights that I had in my tackle bag, they'd been kicking around in the bottom for ages, if you are OCD and like to keep the cosmetic appearance of the barrel then this is no solution 😂

You can get stainless heads, these must add a fair bit of weight vs plastic

Yeah I've swapped the chains \ weights around so they are maxed out at 9 grams, and aware of the heavier metal head they do but can't get them in the colors I like.
elltell, good idea, they must be standard fitting so might be a weight out there that's similar in size so it doesn't look too bad.
I could just buy another one and use that weight (seems a bit daft @ 15 quid) ; most situations I only have one rod at extreme range.
