Can anyone recommend a back rest that will not, under any circumstances, allow the rod to fly out of it on the most violent of takes?
Fishing fairly well locked up yesterday, up against a weed bed and pads about 20 yards out and sitting very close to my rods, got a take - beep on the alarm, rod bent over and then before I knew it the rod had been pulled off of the rest. The only reason it didn't go in is because the reel got stuck behind the front bars.
I use the original Solar backrests at their tightest setting, with duplon rod handles.
Never had this happen before in 15 years of using these rests but the whole episode has got me thinking. Any suggestions welcomed.

ise what you've got now and pair them with a jag rod locker, or a jag lock down and jag rod locker...the rods not going anywhere with that combination

Just stick a bankstick by the side of your reel, and tuck the reel handle behind it. Nothing is moving then

Sorry to disappoint you but they won't help. I have a set and while they are decent enough for general use, anything even remotely locked up and they will fail. The magnets aren't very strong

Yeah still not great really. Mine have been relegated to my catfish setup where you never fish even slightly tightened up

Sonik rubber stanz grips they do 3 sizes I have found them to be the cheapest and most grippy or Cygnet Quicklok butt rest again which can be adjusted depending on whether cork or Duplon

I am now wondering if perhaps I could have changed the set up slightly to avoid it happening. Generally my rods are fairly level - not pointing up or down. Given the water level is slightly lower, perhaps I need to get my rod tips down lower?
It happened quick but the rod bent over and almost "popped" out of the rest rather than getting pulled out of it.

It's a pity John Roberts' aren't still available, they are effective and cost pennies.

Nash butt locks are pretty good.

Anything tight and then double over a black hair band on the spigot and over the rest. It works like a jag one and stays on until you lift up it ends up on the but of the rod when you pick it up or breaks off you can get 100 for a quid at primary

I use the small Solar backrests on the tightest setting and my rods are solid - however as its no longer fashionable to fish with butt rings behind alarms I've had neville ball clips (probably equally unfashionable) whipped on to all my main carp rod set ups about 80mm behind the real seat which basically perfoms the same function.
One set is abbreviated but the other was full jap shrink so I had the last 100mm at the real seat end removed so that the bare blank sits 'tight' in the backrest (rather than duplon etc). Talk to your local rod builder - Bob the Rod did both my sets and it cost less than a set of Jag rod lockers etc and is less faff

PB Products Bungee Fishing Rod Locks are £5.45 and lock the rods in any position, I sometimes fish with my rods completely up even then I use the PB Products Bungee Fishing Rod Locks
There is 1 channel that I fish where you fish with min 8 oz lead, my rods are set up 45° degrees and 1 meter deep in the water the PB bungee lock keeps them perfectly in place.
If I'm in a crazy mood again I might buy the Jag locks but the Pb's do the job just as well I suspect.

How deep is that sunk in then ?
Tend to pin front and back down if using a pod and need the rigidity

I couldn't get pb ones when I wanted them so I made some solid as a rock. I then pin my pod down and something has to break before a rod goes anywhere.

I would go butt ring tight on buzzer over anything else, nothing new to remember and works for me.

Same here. I think it's just a fashion thing. Like having the rods so close together you have to fold the reel handles. Another thing I can't stand I like my rods apart so they don't interfere with each other when you get a run.

I am using a pod with everything nicely spaced out. Gone are the days of struggling with single sticks, I have much better things to do on my short sessions than getting into a froth whilst trying to get six bank sticks into rock hard ground around a gravel pit where it hasn't rained for months!

I only use my 3 rod rod pod with 2 rods the middle bankstick is insert completely into the ground (can also use a bivvy peg) so my rodpod will never be pulled from its place, on the middle bankstick in the ground i put my anti theft alarm.
for single bankstick setup you can use a Bankstick stabilizer.

Aaaah, if you don't give a rats about being carp trendy just use matrix or neville stainless sticks and a big club hammer to smash them in. Use the nash butt grippers and nothings going in. You may need a powered barrow to get the kit to your swim without suffering a hernia.

There is only 1 bankstick in the ground to secure the rodpod, on the channel where I mostly fish it's not always easy to knock banksticks into the ground (lots of concrete and concetrate rubble) then I use 1 bivvy pegs.
+ I also don't want to scratch the whole rodpod, 1 bankstick is enough to keep everything in place so why put all banksticks in the ground (unnecessary extra work)

Eh? Just seems pointless, and a bit of kit you are carrying about which you don't need to? If you're pushing sticks into the ground anyway then why bother?
