Trent baits to DNA switch - good idea or mistake? (52 posts / 11,804 views)

Have been on Trent Freshwater Shrimp for a few seasons and have got on really well with it but am looking to switch over to shelf life due to minimal time on the bank.

The Nash bait I was on prior to Trent is now discontinued 4G squid) and not a fan of the new Scoped Squid. Have also previously used Sticky Krill with decent results but never really had much confidence in it.

As a result I am looking at switching to DNA SLK. Has anyone made the switch from Trent to DNA and how did you get on? I am under the impression that DNA make a quality bait (as do Trent) but don't want to waste a season on a inferior bait....

Cheers,
James.

Plenty of good shelf life boilies available.
Oxford Baits MC NUT I am using at the moment with good results.

Essential Baits also worth a shout, B5 has done me plenty in the past

Thanks all for the feedback - sounds like the general consensus is that DNA is a solid bet.

I hadn't considered the A bait - am aiming to switch to something more readily available. At present it is a mail order job for Trent which whilst not a massive issue is less convenient than grabbing an extra bag on the way fishing. That leaves me with the choice of Sticky, CC Moore, Mainline and DNA realistically.

I am aware Trent will be doing a shelf-life but they have been talking about it for a few years now and so far unavailable. If it does appear before I deplete my freezer stocks I may just switch to that but as above something more commercially available is appealing.

If its just down to less time on the bank, could you stick with Trent freezer bait but buy less?

You have freezer space, you have a good bait, why do you need to change?
Just because you're not fishing as much doesn't mean that you need to change what you are fishing, you are just not going to use so much.
You can order the same 10kilos, but instead of it lasting a month it will last 2 or 3..

Never change unless you have to, imo, you now have to build up confidence in a new bait, there all good , good luck

I could/can - it's what I've done for the last 2 years. Just would like the though of being able to pick a bag up here and there. Doesn't seem worth ordering a load at a time and having kilo's on the freezer for a dozen sessions.

I know exactly where you are coming from mate.
I done the same, I had a bait freezer but got rid due to limited time on the bank.

I now use shelflife boilies for convenience and it hasn't effected my catch rate at all.
Shelfies have come on a long way and personally I don't see the need to use freezer baits, I can take home what I don't use without worrying about refreezing or air drying etc

I use a fair bit of DNA get it at a fantastic price. I use frozen slk and S7 I like to mix them. Also odd 10 kilo of readymade baits.Like the mix of the two and adding some readymade adds another thing in breakdown time. Have confidence mate DNA do fantastic bait and there service is world class. Regarding sticky krill again good bait just pricey if you use alot. Have used trent baits shrimp and again first class. Unless you are buying Billy ******** multi coloured Ebay soya you will be fine.

Joss,
I agree with that, but at the same time the angler should understand the limitations and differences between attractor baits and food source baits.

A bit confusing now with anglers fishing over Spod mixes or groundbait where either will or should work, but if fishing boilies alone...

Doesn't have to be a good food source for them to keep eating it though.

Have used DNA SLK, it was slightly softer than S7, couldn't say whether it compares to Trent Baits but it worked well for me.

If you're catching and it's not impacting you financially stick with it. Trent baits is very gd. DNA I would say are gd but coat for the masses. As mentioned any decent bait (which most are these days) will catch you fish, location is key. SLK looks like a great bait, have tempted trying it in the past, it is very NOT in your face like a lot of baits but a gd food source. What I would say/recommend is mix your baits, there are so many advantages to doing this, fish will prefer certain attractors, if you mix what your putting in there not only will it confuse the fish as to which is your hookbait, but will also draw different fish in. If your fishing 2 rods over a baited spot, mix your baits and use different matching hookbaits, see which ones takes first. You build confidence.

Agree with this totally.

when I lived over in Nottingham I went over to pick my baits up direct from Trent baits and the guys showed me around the industrial set up at the time, were really open and honest about their work and were generally just no bull, nice guys and produced really good bait at a decent price.

If I was ever getting back into carp fishing id happily use their bait again with confidence.

I personally wouldn't fix what isn't broken. If I didn't roll my own I'd still use Trents shrimp. Fantastic bait!

Thanks all for the thoughts. Will consider whether to stick with the shrimp but sounds like DNA is well regarded too so will go to that if I move away from the freezer/Trent don't produce a shelf-life.

So get this, I'm a huge fan of DNA. It's my go-to bait. Last weekend I had one of the best sessions in a long time all on DNA SLK and Bug. However, at times I was using SLK & But wafters but also utilising my Trent View wafters that I'd picked up at Old Mill earlier in year, and at the weekend had a PB on the yellow dumbbell squid wafter with SLK and Bug freebies

I'm going to order some as soon as it's available and will report back. My one curiosity is what shelf life it will have, I know some stabilised baits are given a fairly short expiry (3-6 months) rather than the traditional shelfie which seem to last almost indefinitely.

I think some a shorter than that....I had some from a company recently, opened the 5K bag and used about half then went to use them again about 4 weeks later and they smelled like cat sick..... ....binned the lot of them.

I wonder if you could freeze a bulk order and then defrost a few kgs at a time as a sort of semi-shelf life.

I'm no bait boffin, but i was advised if you freeze shelf life baits then you need to treat the the same as fresh frozen baits.

You could always freeze a few then defrost and see how long they last,or vacuum pack them which should lengthen their shelf life.

You pretty much would. I was just thinking in terms of preserving any left overs from a session if they wouldn't last until your next trip.
