Anyone else ever sat watching birds dive on your bait thinking will that spool any fish ? Will fish still feed around diving birds ? Is there a link do birds follow carp around feeding off the bottom ?

I have.
I think they are aware of each other but dont neccesarily see each other as a threat, just competition for available food and/or the birds might help the carp by picking at the weed/stirring the bottom.
The birds and the presence of the carp makes for a competitive feeding situation if only you could avoid the bird pickups
I've had runs a matter of a couple of minutes after a coot pickup which I thought had ruined my chances completely.
I've seen tufties and coots coming to the surface looking alarmed and leaving the area, could have come accross a pike I suppose though.
Something I plan to investigate in the winter for as long as I can take the coot/tuftie pickups
I'd also be very interested in anyone else observations

I hate it when cormarants appear in my baited area I'm convinced they spook fish away , all the others don't really bother me unless they accidentally pick up the hook bait and yes I've seen the non predatory birds spooked by something sub surface

one thing I have noticed through winter is the tufties/coots tend to follow the fish around or vice versa. If the birds have found something to feed on then the fish will likely be there too. But then again you're likely to get plenty more bird pickups than runs in winter!!
It's something worth noting, whether it's feeding or just where they are sheltering up in small bays or something. Well worth watching them.

As off putting it maybe to us, i dont think the carp really spook. In fact, coots etc are really good at re setting rigs for us

I don't think that on most occasions coots or tufties spook the carp.
I have watched coots diving on my bait at Nazeing, back of Long Island in The Lonely, giving me bleeps (I thought) so swearing at them, when I had a run which turned out to be a decent fish.
I get more annoyed at tufties which don't seem to take the hint, but even in daylight, a laser pen held below binoculars (so you are aiming) will spook them.
The number of times you see a flustered coots come to the surface is amusing, and I'm sure a fish has spooked it.
This week I saw just that, followed immediately by a carp rolling over my bait.

Its more annoyance at the word carpy, and those that use it, and having to see it everytime anew thread is started about some element of fishing in weed, or the various other threads. Needs to be a weekly limit to how many threads you can post

Watched carp scare all manor of wildlife today at my syndicate. Also watched a Spomb skim 2ft from the head of a mooching carp... also didn't spook.
A couple of weeks ago I had put a bit of bait on a spot and the birds hadn't noticed it. There were half a dozen mallards sitting just four yards away. Suddenly a carp got its head down and bubbles started hitting the surface, almost instantly one mallard went over and sat in the bubbles. Within minutes all six were diving and coming up with boilies.

Coots feed on the same spots as carp i was told... no idea if true but wasnt disproved when i went to thorpe lea recently

Nope. Had plenty of fish take as ducks and wotnot are churning up the water over my hook baits. Carp aren't bothered one bit when food is in front of them. I'd be a bit worried if someone was trying to create a link in their mind between birds and carp behaviour - trip to the shrink needed maybe

Ha ha, interesting thread, I remember starting a similar one years ago about the link between birds and carp location after observations I made on Horseshoe, mainly had the piss ripped out of me back then
When the tufty/coot surfaces all panic stricken, squawking, and flys off, always gives me hope.

A lake local to me the ducks get fed by the public, bread etc. You should see how often the carp will be grabbing it before the ducks. Amusing to see mallards lifted up by the carp snaffling bread before the ducks get it.
Of course it's on a lake with a 'no floater fishing' rule.

Seen lots of underwater footage. Usually the carp spook but return after a few minutes. Even seen a coot attack a carp over a boilie once

Loads of links in nature, sometimes it works for us and other times not. I generally fish in close and am not bothered by birds swimming around & over any spots I'm fishing, I also tend not to really spook them off either, more just move them off slowly.
