I mentioned in February that the xtd was being discontinued,Shimano are working on a complete new range.

Looks like it, the new reel has ci4 in it already.

Surprised it's that heavy with ci4+, it's heavier than the old Ultegra ci4+, but lighter than the old Ultegra XTD.

It's 2oz heavier than the ci4 in 1400 size. Not for me, will keep my ci4's as I have both sizes and rate them highly. Looked at the new techniums as possible replacements for my 1400's but at nearly treble the price I just can't see any justification for such a huge difference.

I really wonder what are the pros if u get extra 60 gr of weight. That is not a little weight on a reel

Will be interested if they eventually bring out a 5500 size...

have three since the beginning of june, think shimano has never produced a better reel in this price segment. solid, no play on the parts, great clutch, light weight, nice looking, have the mgs and find the price compared to these obseen.

Thought the same when comparing the ci4 14000 to the tec but the tecs are different class, lighter, more bearings. Did notice these new ultegra xte don't have a waterproof drag.

How did you find them for loading line ?

Did you have to add any washers or do anything for the line lay ?

Used the 10000 spool reducers, line lay was fine no washers needed, hi-speed drag witch is OK.

Yeah, 'see it has the hi-speed drag, just wondered if they done the sensible thing and slowed it down a tad, as you can't play a fish on the last\current model.

Yes but mgs xtc where faster, slowed them down with felt washers, the mgs xtd are a bit slower, as are the xte.

Yikes.
I owned the Castizm which has the standard 'QD' from Daiwa, and it was shocking quick.

Any longer term reviews on these reels now guys ?

Also been using these for almost a year now...had all the expensive shimano's..
But these are just as smooth as the Tech Mgs's..good clutch, lots of adjustment.
For a fraction of the price.
Perfect line guard, no fluorocarbon going underneath it..( nightmare with other reels).

Sorry to dig up an old thread, anyone got any longer term reviews on the 14000 xte ? Looking at buying a pair, cheers 👍

I've had a set for about 18 months and really like them. Far better reels (imo) than the Emblems they replaced. Good line lay, cast well and I like the clutch, not too fast which is what I like, I feel it gives me more control

Sure m8,

Used them from when they came out.
Coming from the ci4 these are a tad heavier.
Still they never feel heavy in my arms, I use them with 12ft casting rods and 10 ft rods. They are smooth and feel like a quality reel, I used them in all conditions muds, dirt, hail everything they did not have a problem. Must say compared to the last ones I almost never get line knots while casting. Only one of the reels got dirt from the ground in it so it was giving out some bad sounds while winding. Easy fix just removed the spool cleaned it up a bit was as good as new.
Haven't tried the new XR version but the XTE is a good workhorse reel, keeps working while not thinking about and taking care of it.
If you can find them for a decent price even better.

The best thing I did with my 14,000 XTE set after 2 years was sell them, now have the Daiwa 23 Emblem 35 SCW QD (they also come in 45 size), and these are better in every way than that Shimano misery

The drag on the XTE is a disaster, I have used felt, teflon, ice washers and the drag remains crap, I have also had a few times that the Line Safe Guard just jumped out when casting long distances.

The drag of the Daiwa 23 Emblem runs much better when playing fish and I have more confidence in this reel when casting long distances

I also found it annoying that the XTE's handle doesn't fold completely

I got rid of Daiwa Iso 5000QD Reels in favour of these and have not looked back, great line lay and sublime clutch and won't be changing anytime soon.

Think il wait till Black Friday and treat myself to a pair of these then 😁

not for me , i still use my ultegra 1400 xtb ci4 i have not seen a better ultegra since that model dont like the look of this new model either especially being heavier

They do the XR now, which is the replacement for the Ci4+.
