As per the title, what's peoples view on the single best pop up you can buy now?

You can name one only, shop bought, make, colour and flavour.

If you could only ever use one what would it be?

This could have been a very interesting thread. Right up until you said shop bought.

So ok im going to answer this slightly differently. I think the best SHOP BOUGHT pop ups are the Haywood Specials.

I think the BEST POP UPS aren't bought from shops.

How about that?

If we were to count anyone who sells pop ups for money as a ‘professional' then perhaps the best professionally rolled pop ups you have bought would be give a wider range.

My shop bought would be white CCM NS1+

My ‘professional' would probably be white Scent From Hell, I wish they weren't!

My favourite would be my own.

That's fine, forget the word shop, let's go with available to purchase instead.

I hear you about home made, I make my own cork ball pop ups, but I'm interested here in peoples view on the best you can buy commercially, whether from a shop, bait company or some fella who sells off the web.

So, hopefully that sets the guide rails..

I do have a raging Jag fetish but I'd put Specialized as the best shop bought pop up. although I've only seen them in the tackle shop years ago it counts lol!

As an alternative hook bait over my fishmeal I used to routinely recommend a hookbaits they used to do with an orange / brown crusty coating that tasted lovely.

As a pop up considered widely available in shops, I'd say just pick a colour. if it needs to be more buoyant, add some cork, but most of these baits aren't built with food in mind and I personally think most bright pop ups are 95% taken due to colour.

My favourite pop up colours have always been off-white, a bold orange, a yolk type yellow, and red.

I used the dull yellows to actually almost blend it on some gravel spots fishing in oxford. its actually not at all high vis in a lot of situations.

I think JB has the right to not want his name associated products he has no control over that's his prerogative. What that's got to do with my choice of hookbaits I have no idea, although I'm sure you'll know the exact answer and not be afraid to tell me

As it's not my company so I'm not self promoting...

I've spoken a few times to Wayne, we share agreement on the importance of proper food signals and I am confident that he'll produce hookbaits up to the job. If he doesn't, blame John baker lol.

Coppermill Baits 👍🏼

Don't think you get it, it's not that JB doesn't want him using his product, it's that he doesn't want it listed as an inclusion. You're right he can use them as he buys them but JB has every right to not want them being named on the inclusion list.
Two different things you're on about here.

Nope, if someone has bought it they're only being honest to say it has it in. It's literally the main attraction for other companies using his flavours is his name sells. I'm not convinced his flavours are hugely special, rather just more concentrated. I'm a liquid food proponent myself and think flavours belong in kids sweets 🤪

Isn't it law that you have to put a list of what's being used in products on the packaging now ? If so then no one is breaking any rules

100%. Why any company would want their name associated with a product that;

a: They have no idea what else is included alongside their products
b: They have zero control of overall quality of product or service
c: They cannot guarantee said product even contains their product.

That's standard business practice in any walk of life unless there is a commercial agreement between brands. I'm not sure why this has come as such a shock.

That is not to say i think JB should stop people using his flavours in commercial baits, however he has every right to request his name is not used without permission in my opinion.

What your referring to is around claims on labelling and packaging. When you can state certain claims on the product.

A example that i have seen - Walkers Crisp using Marmite as a flavour. You don't have to buy the flavour from Marmite to call it this, you just to have permission from them to use the name. On the flip side you can get the flavour from Marmite but if they don't want you to use their name you cant call it a Marmite flavoured crisp. instead you would call it a 'yeast extract spread flavour' or something similar... this prevents you from any legal repercussions.

I'm not fully versed on it myself (only done a few courses) but have sat in enough meetings where this has been discussed at length to understand it.

It all comes down to brand protection for the businesses involved.

Just wondering how you're fishing the marmite crisps..? Popped up with a bit of foam maybe?

It was the best analogy i could think of at the time.

I'm working and we supply yeast to marmite and we had just been discussing a pick up as i read the post.

And if i did fish them it would definitely be a floater set up.... ive had one off the top with a pickeled onion space invader in my youth.

Marmite is a registered brand name.

Therefore you (or me) cannot sell another similar product and call it ‘Marmite'. We probably wouldn't get away with ‘marmight' either.

Has JB registered the name ‘JB Plum' (or whichever of his flavours you are concerned about) ? I somewhat doubt it but I'm happy to stand corrected.

Yes he almost certainly has an ‘exclusive' on sourcing that actual flavour - but that is not the same as a registered trade name.

AND there are loads of people called John Baker in this world. And even more called JB.

Maybe JB Plumbz would solve the problem.

His ala salar is as you say a "registered brand name" aka a trade mark

for clarity i'm not concerned about any of this

in terms of marmite/ marmight comment - look at the colin the caterpillar escapade.

the post you referenced wasn't exactly about trade marks and wording - it was about making claims on labelling and packaging. The point being you do need permission to use a name on a product to make a claim.
