What are peoples recommendations for books relating to bait making.

would like to know some for all levels of bait making so for beginners to more advanced things.

ideally books on "Why" you use certain things over others and the thoughts behind them.

I Posted about this a few months back, there isnt a lot published, but if you read back through the original thread for the BM1 mix on here, there is a wealth of information in there.
ive got a few mixes to send over to you via facebook but will be this evening as at work.

Smurf on here is a font of knowledge and i have learnt alot from him .

But i think the main thing is with bait, trial and error. people were catching carp on paste/potatoes/50.50 mix with flavour, i think its all trial and error.

Thanks mate. Totally agree with the wealth of information on here. Especially with Smurf and a few others as I can already see they offer great advice that seems widely respected by the vast majority of members on here.

just fancied something to read at work on break to be honest!

I've been looking at "the big carp technical" series as that has a few books that I'm interested in. wonder if anyone has read these ?

The classic Rod Hutchinson books are good if you can find them.
Mike Wilmotts "Carp Life" (the first) got a decent bait chapter.
Jason Riders new book "This time it's personal" is worth checking out.

Worth joining the home made bait buffs group on Facebook if you are on it. We've got a 'book' which outlines lots of the functional aspects of ingredients as well as dozens of recipes.

Yeah of course mate, just don't take everything everyone says as gospel, use it as guidance and make your own mind up about things. There are a lot of differing ideas when it comes to bait

I totally agree im very new to it all but have alreay been doing a fair bit of reading i just need to practice more. It can be ocerqhelming at timea so a book structure i find helps.

Thats why i want to accumulate some knowledge of good people and maybe see what direction it takes me in.... again thanks to these forums in general with the help.

Ive just ordered the beekay one off amazon btw ! Both great recommendations.

Unfortunately there is no "modern" books for bait making at the moment or up to date if you want. All older books are good base and you can learn a lot from them but there are so many new ingreedients and procceses of making bait nowdays that some new book would be really refreshing.

Not many 'names' make their own bait now, it a dying art. A couple of recent books worth a read are 'Carp, Bait and 'Nutritional Recognition'' by Tim Paisley and Jason Riders new book has a few jems in it.

You hit the nail on the head there “it is a dying art”
Mass produced bait has been going backwards. Nowadays I see baits disguised as something that was made years ago when it was done properly. Making your own bait is a fundamental part of angling and only when you have made it yourself can you spot the ones that are pretending to be something else. You do not need to be a scientist either. You need to be logical and have the ability to watch natural carp feeding up close. There is so much talk out there about what attracts carp and how this flavour will change your angling etc. The internet is full of basic recipes to get you started, you will soon learn that certain good ingredients combined with detectable amino rich liquids are deadly in boilies. A basic way to look at bait making is make sure you have digestible, soluble, protein rich elements and every ingredient must serve a purpose (adds protein, aids rolling, tastes better)
The hardest bit about it all is the costing.
Learn the basic steps, watch how a really good boilie is one of the biggest edges (especially right now in September) and you will be one step away from a new pb. I think that my recipes are the most efficient they have ever been and I made them with one eye on the past and the other on a bottle of hydrolysed fish protein!!!😉😉

So much competition in the bait making game now.
Not much in the way of ‘modern books' giving away too many ‘trade secrets'
Loads of great ingredients and liquids to play with. We have never had it so good TBH.

As per previous posts... Sometimes you have to go old skool, take one step backwards, to take progress forwards. I'm always skimming over my own notes, or books I've got. Sometimes the penny drops when you least expect it !

You cannot fail to learn from writings from Rod hutchinson, Chris Haswell, Alan smith, Fred Wilton, Mike Willmott, premier baits, Geoff bowers, cotswold baits, geoff kemp, Nutrabaits, Ken Townley & Tim Paisley, Martin Locke, Gary Bayes.

Look, learn, read, roll, bait and watch.
Fish and enjoy your findings, good and bad.
Sometimes free advice online, like on this forum is about as good as it gets, triggering much thinking 🤔
A different angle, or mindset, which sometimes is all you need to fathom something out, that has been bugging us for ages.
Final piece or two of a 🧩 bait puzzle

Whilst not strictly books, the Mark McKenna articles in carpworld were also very good.

If you can't get hold of the old carp word articles you can access them on the home made bait buffs Facebook group.

Jason Ryder has some stuff on YouTube worth a listen to.

Not really a book, but in the benelux you used to have a fishing magazine called voor en door de visser and in the 90'ies they ran a series of articles covering boilie ingredients in a very useful format. Since then everybody uses this extensive list, here is one example: http://www.karpervissersonline.nl/2009/09/14/boilie-ingredienten/

If you run it through a translation service you will have a very good overview, albeit that not all modern ingredients are listed. But all in all, you get the nutritional value, inclusion rates, does it roll well, bind well and the instant response. It gave me something to refer too when bait making really started.
