Morning all
Apologies if this has been done before...
So I'm always thinking about trying to find something a bit different. Had the idea of using smooth peanut butter as a paste to coat hookbait. Readily available, cheap, smelly for the fish etc.
Is it safe? I know there's a lot of prep needed for nuts as bait.
Anyone tried it? With any success?
I'm not casting hundreds of yards so not too worried about losing it on the cast.

It's a brilliant attractor as a paste, fish love it, I've also used it as an additive when making boilies with good results, definitely give it a go

I have made baits with it long long ago and it was very good. Don't know the recipe anymore, sorry!

I have made boilies using smooth peanut butter but its so oily it made them tricky to roll.
I ended up just pressing them out into pillows and caught very well on them.

I prefer Crunchy. Work a bit of whey protein into the paste to make it stickier, and also add a pinch of lumpfish eggs

Literally never Ignore nut prep. What a bad bit of advice. For hookbaits/peanut butter you can use straight out the packet (already prepared so humans can eat them in most cases anyway). Maybe a small amount crushed up is fine. If you're using a decent amount of nuts to bait up with and fish over then prepare them properly.
You can get some good deals on organic nut butters on places like myprotein and other health/gym type websites. Almond, cashew, etc. 1kg tubs are generally competitively priced with smaller jars in the supermarkets. I've played with diluting smooth nut butters down to a thinner consistency with hot water and using as a soak to defrost boilies in. Leaves a sticky coating on them and a nice trail in the water. Can't say it improved my bites as I messed with it during winter on a tricky water and went from blanking to still blanking

Please remove or edit your post, it's terrible advice. Ignoring nut prep is dangerous . There's a great difference between raw and cooked nuts

You can also let the butter (not just Peanut, Almond etc or a mix) down with a bit of glycerol to make a dip/glug, add any flavours you want. The glycerol should act as a mild preservative too, I've got some in the fridge 2 or 3 years old now, still smells amazing.

Mate, it isn't about whether you catch fish on it straight from the bag, its about the safety of the carp, raw nuts can cause serious damage to the fish, thats the reason why people and companies always sell them after they have been soaked and boiled to make it safe for the fish to eat. Do some research and you will realise why.

Worst advice I've ever seen given on this forum, you are probably the only person on here that doesn't know that all particle must be prepared in the correct way, infact the Particle Preparation Guide sticky on here has been looked at 53321 times, I suggest you become number 53322!!

I think he just means as a hookbait, which I'd agree with. But agree it should defo be clarified that unprepped nuts in any qty is not the one.

Deffo think that he was on about hookbaits. Many a carp angler has used dry or honey roasted nuts straight from the bag and incorporated them in PVA bags as loose feed. Macadamia nuts are a brilliant hookbait with no prep. When you consider that peanuts are roasted and not boiled when making peanut butter also, it does make you wonder what actually makes them so potentially dangerous? The fact that the carp does not have a stomach and only a long tube and they are crushed by the throat teeth it is practically like straight in and straight out. It does make you think also that when you see lake owners pouring in 10 x 25kg sacks of dry maize with no ill effects to the fish, just why nuts get such a bad press as maize swells just as much and if that is indeed the case and the real reason why they are banned. I guess in today's carp fishing the word " Moderation" is almost considered as swearing.
Or perhaps if lots of anglers got back on the nuts it would not be very good for boilie sales I would imagine.
Always safer to soak and boil even if just for peoples moral standards if using as loose feed that is.

He didnt mention hookbaits in particular though? The thing with these forums is they are open to people of all experience,so a newbie to carp angling could read that and just go chucking in loads of un prepped nuts . It was an awful post

I was thinking the same idea. I know Ken said he used crunchy peanut butter but can someone clarify this is 100% safe to use on boilies? Are the nuts cooked?

Issue with peanuts in large numbers is that the carp love them, when everyone is feeding them and not much else the fish suffer as the peanuts don't give them much at all nutritionally. This has actually been proven by science (the bit about the low nutritional value of a peanut for carp due to not being able to process them).
Therefore it's scientifically proven that a peanut only diet can lead to emaciation (spelling?).
Now you couple that with making them even harder for the fish to process by not preparing them...well you'll speed up that process.
Wasn't over the top peanut usage they demise of a number of fisheries back in the day? They'll be some older anglers much better placed to know about them. Once anglers realised the fish were being caught on peanuts everyone was on them, and going overboard...
In any case, whether you believe they are dangerous unprepared or not, preparing them helps with attraction of the peanuts themselves. So why wouldn't you do it? Quicker release of oils, and other things depending on how you prepare them. Each to their own though of course. The French pile in uncooked maize, is it anywhere near effective as cooked? Or even fermented?

Unfortunately I have witnessed first hand carp dying from particles swelling in their digestive tract. Peanuts and maple peas being the culprits. Thrown in straight from the bag.
When you say that fish farmers feed unprepared particles to their stock that's not quite accurate. Soaked wheat and maize is fed, but never completely unprepared.
The whole peanut debate years ago is what stopped me believing in the hnv theory. How can carp know exactly what's good for them on the one hand and yet happily gorge themselves on something that will do them harm, or even kill them?

You should have made your original post clearer ,for the reason mentioned earlier. There are 100% cases of unprepped particles doing major damage, as confirmed by Andy( and knowing him personally I know he's no reason to bs anyone) ,the guides are there for a reason and have remained because they are necessary. Particle preparation is essential.

Preocupation, over riding factors, greed, competing, nutritional recognition is a thing, but theres always a but.

Whether uncooked peanuts or any particle for that matter are bad for carp or not ( jurys out on that one for me as not enough scientific research on the subject has been done on this for me ) Is I think peanuts especially benefit from being cooked. I just think being soft makes them more palatable.

Maize is an excellent example of this. Soaked but uncooked it won't do the carp any harm, but once cooked it is way more digestible and of greater food value to carp.
