But I could reach 110 yds with a 2.5 chimera
I seem to fish a lot at the range that's just beyond underarm casting, but too close for overhead casting with most 'all rounder 3.25' rods
These days I'll happily trade 30yds of range for a better experience close in

A mistake i thought to discontinue the chimera , one of the nicest blanks i have ever used in any t.c , im glad i got some blanks before they stopped producing them.

They say they'll still replace breakages, I really should have tried my luck but 5 out of 6 sections seemed like taking the piss

I'm quite glad I couldn't decide between the no 3 or the torrix 2.5 as my tester reel seat discoloured after 6 months outside, it'd probably take a decade to get that much exposure on my rods but I've got a couple of test seats out in the elements now with different varnishes. It'll be autumn by the the time I order them so I've got plenty of time to decide

No good for me. My hands are about 80 grit

In the good old days we fished with three rods one of each t.c 2.25,2.5 and 2.75 .An all round rod does,nt exist.
For me my old Kevin Maddocks was the best alround, but was tired of seeing them and gave them to my nephew last year.

I had the original KM1 challenger 12' 2.75 and they where superb able to put a baited rig 150 yards and fish under your rod tips. The KM2 which I had due to mine being nicked where pants in comparison. I sorely miss mine. Had my first thirty on one in 97 never to be forgotten. At the time the Daiwa had a good reputation and do to this day however I was happy with the KM1s they truly did our perform any Daiwa Rods my pals had at the time. Such an underrated blank. The styling put a lot of people off with the chestnut brown blanks and gold rings.

For me the Torrix Acurix in 3lb is th perfect rod..... beautiful rod.... should never have sold mine...like a lot of things, you don't know how good they are till they are gone...

You can't make perfect because we are all different and angle differently, bit like marmite some will love a responsive rod with a buitifull playing action but that won't be perfect for those that fish huge European inland seas at extreme range. Add in fish size and a rod used on a historic estate lake with a few leney doubles /scraper twenties wouldn't be most peoples choice for the inland seas with eighty pound fish. Tailor the suit to fit the person wearing it, same with rod choice tailor it fit your venue and fish being angled for.

People will claim AKN's etc, but it's all with rose tinted glasses. In reality, most of these old blanks are tired now and feel anything but crisp, especially compared to modern blanks.
As for best all rounder, I would have said Terry Hearn Mk1 12' 9”s. But more recently I was impressed with the Aviator Flex blanks for all-roundness, and then I have picked up some Shimano TX9 3.25's and these rods have blown me away! Not cool or trendy, but they are the nuts!

Depends how good at casting you are. I had a go with some 2.75 harrison torrix accurix last year and with 10lb line i could get them 130 ish but they were absolutely wonderful at everything else. I had 2 mid 20s from under my feet and they were absolutely superb
Its the best balance that I've experienced. Maybe a 3lb would give you the distance that you want but its a big ask for such a progressive blank

Agree with most that there just isn't a perfect, one size fits all rod. But I guess that's why most people have multiple sets! That's my excuse anyway!
I've got a pair of custom built Armalites which I've had for 20+ years and even now, they come with me on every session. And depending on where I end up, if I can, I'll use them as they're an absolute pleasure to play a fish on and to be honest, work for the vast majority of my angling.

What it shows is that these old rods designed for fishing are only ‘improved' with a bias towards casting distances beyond the capability of 95% of people. In fact, some people cast further with a more progressive blank with a bigger performance window.
I agree they are brilliant rods, like the tournament reels they are still really the standard by which everything since is measured.
Anyone know how the x45 compares? Isn't that a weave in the blank?

Yes but you see you like fishing rods not barge poles , the accurix is probably the best fishing rod produced in the last 10 years but its overlooked because you have to use a rod over 3.5 tc or you dont know what you are doing .

I actually didn't think much of the accurix when I tried it alongside a chimera, seemed to lock where the chimera would just keep going.
I had just moved to a water with some horrendous snags and even being careful I figured there would be times I would need to clamp the spool and just hang on, like you can with a multi carp, but I wanted something a bit crisper in the cast. My mate has the tx9's snd i didnt like them at all. Very tip heavy and felt a bit dead. Rods are a very personal thing, everyone has there own favourites. In my opinion there is no true all round rod that will do everything, you have to sacrifice something.

How does the accurix compare to the century C2? I handled an accurix 2.75 after I had got my C2, felt a similar when wiggling it around in the shop and playing the pretend carp (shop assistant holding the tip).
The C2 works as an 'all rounder' for my style of fishing in 2.75lb t/c although I never fish over 100yds...

Its a shame that there are thousands of hours of video/podcasts featuring bait "experts" or rig "experts" but next to nothing on rod design or even the technical aspects of rod building.

Harrisons used to do an excellent blog about rod design and development a few years back ,think most of its been taken down now though.
It seems more fly, lure and sea anglers mags show more interest in the tech and way their rods and reels work and what they're paying for.

I wonder if that's because the 2.25 blank was designed as a floodwater barbel blank, which has to deal with casting huge loads but still be forgiving for smaller fish/lighter hook links.
That's kind of why I'm looking at the chimera no3 for my carp rods, along with the 2.5 ballista and a couple of the torrix blanks

That and that it's just designed to have more performance beyond the tc. Because Kev's big snipers are built on TEs and are more usable than the factory spec I'd say it's in the layout as much as anything.
I know he likes a blank with some power rather than a noodle, which I've always said too. A faster action lighter tc blank that has a usable tip for short range flicks, handles heavy loads for a lob, casts 100 yards and can pull 10lb when needed is an all round rod
I want some 10' 1.75s, I love the 11' torrix in that tc but not sure how the barbel stalker they make compares

The 2.5tc torrix will do that correctly built, having rods capable of casting light leads a good distance is a huge advantage for presentation on weed/silt rather than burying deep in it.

The 2.25 will too mate. That's what the snipers were
That's why I think a sensible quality 2.75 blank built correctly is as close to an all round performer as you could get and still please most people. Because most wouldn't go below that and certainly wouldn't want 8mm guides on the tip section, once you go to10 or above on the tip I think they're getting too tall and heavy for that style of build

Fascinating set of posts!
I have been reading with interest. I posted because I find myself in a position where I want ot be able to fish at >130 yards and am not the most proficient caster, so looking for a set of rods that flatters my casting, whilst retaining some action.

I have been reading with interest. I posted because I find myself in a position where I want ot be able to fish at >130 yards and am not the most proficient caster, so looking for a set of rods that flatters my casting, whilst retaining some action.
Currently considering the Aviator plus or the Daiwa infinity SP 3 1/1/2lb TC

A) my Elu circ. saw has been stolen by another chippy
and the 18v thing I'm using is garbage. So I need a hk85 too....
B) it's already spent many a job hanging upside down wondering wtf is going on

Free spirit HiS 12 foot 3 1/2tc with 50 mm ringing, with 40s on the blank is stiffer
Century ADV1 in 3 1/4lb test. Nice carp rods

Shimano TX Ultra 12 ft , 3 lb the best all round rod , cast easy 120-140 m and smoth and easy on playing fish

What ever happened to them? Loads of hype then they vanished. I didnt think they would last very long, they had a very strange build.
