My girl is getting older and has arthrits she normally sleeps on a couple of flat unhooking mats (the cheap thin ones) with a couple of towels. I noticed last week that she was shivering as we had a frost so letterboxed the bivvy on the second night. I have been looking to get her a bed with sides so I can cover her and she will be more comfortable. I have found some waterproof beds and even a cradle type mat but thought I would ask on here first.
If it helps she is a medium size 25kg Staffordshire type

Good for you fella!!
I'd be tempted to look at a thermatex type rug or coat for her, bought them for our 3, they love them in fact we had a problem with the spaniel after working him, we'd put it on him to dry him out and keep him warm, the little sh#t got quite miffed when you went to take it off him.
Same stuff they use for horses. Supposed to be good for joints and arthritis etc.

Our dogs always got on ok with the oval plastic dog beds. The sides should keep the wind off, you could line it and cover her with something soft.

I can't comment on the dog bed, but my second rotty suffered terribly with arthritis and joint pain. We tried all of the normal stuff, but then one vet suggested we try a tablet called ZUBRIN. It was like a miracle drug, it was like turning the clock back five years. She had loads more mobility, started enjoying walks again and you could see she was generally just feeling a lot better in her self.
If your old girl starts to struggle a bit, especially like mine did in colder weather, and you've exhausted all the normal Metacam type stuff, I strongly recommend having a chat with your vet about ZUBRIN.

You had a look at putting a jacket on her to warm her up a bit to keep the chill off?
What about a spare unhooking mat with sides and putting a sleeping bag inside so she can curl up in?
One of my boys joints get a bit dicky with the colder weather, so I know where you're coming from. Unfortunately the other dog I have, if I were to sort out a nice warm bed for the one who has dodgy joints, the other one would push him out. It's like musical chairs in my bivvy at night.

Thanks guys I have ordered her a coat and then looked at the bed thing. This has caught me on the hop to be honest as up until last winter she was an outside until it got proper cold dog and wanted it that way.

Apparently my Mrs used to take them bless her. Didn't work for her but maybe will on an animal of a less aggressive nature.

definitely look a supplement for your dog my last black lab had bad problems with elbow displacia which the joint ended up in a bad way due to an infection which destroyed most of the cartilage in the joint, and other arthritis issues, over the years the vet tried most things but as a starting point things like synoquin, nutraquin and yumove advance did help her before she had to go on stronger meds

I've been taking a big soft dog bed for my Lab, although last weekend he decided that my bed was better and decided dad needed a cuddle, after 5 hrs I decided that his was a better bet for him.
The Mrs has ordered a thermal reflective mat for him, I'll put it in his bed for the winter. He also has a sleeping bag which he lays on and I flip over him when he settles.
My other lab has had a shoulder injury for years, he has Magnacare and a fatty acid tablet everyday, without them he wouldn't go anywhere.

I have been guilty of thinking my girl is as tough as old boots when last week taught me different. This post has taught me loads and I have ordered a coat, bed and some bedding. I will not go this week as it's not all going to be here. But have plans for a couple of nights Monday Tuesday when she should be as warm as toast.

Mine joins me throughout the winter.
As well as a warm coat and bed for him I put half a waterproof foam type camping mat under his bed.
Stops a lot of damp creeping thru and gives a bit more insulation.

Hopefully something to look at. Lots of different strengths and lots of choices on amazon. My dog has half a dentastik every day and I put that oil on it and she doesn't mind it one bit. Plenty ways can be given though,

My Siberian Husky rarely sleeps on a bed, or even in the bivvy, her choice is the grass, although I have been trying to convince her my old Chub unhooking mat is better.
Pretty much the only time she comes in the bivvy is when it is raining. I have woken up in the middle of winter and seen a snow covered dog curled up with her tail covering her nose.
In my flat she prefers to sleep on the tiled or carpet floor rather than on any dog bed or on her dog blanket.
My sadly missed Golden Retriever was the same when fishing, although he did sleep on the unhooking mat, but my little Jack Russell/ Highland Terrier cross preferred to sleep in a blanket under my bedchair.
Obviously different breeds have different needs.

Yes and many breeds such as Labradors and retrievers will develop a much thicker coat if kept in a kennel as opposed to bring a house dog. We are sometimes guilty of anthropomorphising too much where pets are concerned.

Mine prefer the sofas but they have two beds currently in circulation, a Woof Bed orthopaedic mattress and a Kumfipets mattress that is topped by vet bed. Neither cost the earth.
I've had Tuffies in the past but mine sleep to prefer the softer beds like here . Good quality though if your budget can stretch that far.
