I've just purchased the new Penn Affinity III's and they're brilliant, and I've just sold the Fox Fx11, and the ESP ONYX.
All honesty, the fox reels are substandard, and I love Fox gear

I've been a Shimano man for what seems a lifetime, tried the ESP Onyx Compacts and absolutely love them.
Not sure I'll ever return to my Shimmies, it's personal preference you have to find what ticks all your boxes and some.

You won't see affinities on eBay that often . The reason for that is it is an awesome reel with top line lay. Tap it in the search n you won't see many moans like you do with other famous brands

Imagine thats down to the fact they sell less. And also the fact that half the “issues” with daiwa for example, are made up by shimano fanboys who have never owned or used the reels they are slagging off, and vice versa. Penn dont seem to fall foul of that

Really? You think... I own a pile of Shimano reels and Daiwa. That's high end spinning and baitcasting reels, as well as my carp reels. In recent years, I think Shimano have started to lose the plot. Their spinning reels are still very good, but the carp reels are poor when directly compared to Daiwa models. I use the Basia 45SCW and Daiwa Castizm QD . Before buying, I looked at the equivalent Shimano and going Daiwa was an easy decision.

I can safely say the Daiwa Emblems are a dream to use but I have the 45's so not sure about the 35's

Is it nonsense though. Penn sell as many reels as daiwa or shimano? Doubt that very much. Maybe they dont get sold on cause they break eventually, or they arent worth much second hand so people dont sell them. There are numerous possibilities, me suggesting one possible reason is hardly nonsense. Suggesting a reel is better than what the op asked about, without justifying it, thats nonsense.
And there arent loads of people on here who will slag one brand off because they own the other? Do me a favour. Daiwa vs shimano, delkim vs fox etc. All the threads go the same way, and normally its people that dont own what they are slagging off, but their mates uncles dog had an issue.

Yes it's nonsense to say that half of the "issues" people mention are things which are made up or about reels they've not owned,or because they are fans of the other brand. Personally I've had shimano and daiwa reels, good and bad from both. I currently use the new gold spool emblems which are good reels, but the penns which I've always raved about are better

I completely agree with you on that the amount of times people slag off delkims for example is crazy just because from “what they have been told” even though they have never owned a set themselves.
My good friend who I fish with hates delkims apparently but he has never owned a set but loves his fox because they are better but not had any experience with them.
Same with reels he says he doesn't like diawa or shimano because of the problems he has heard about but has always loved fox reels

I didnt say mostly the case. I used the term half the “issues” which i thought was vague enough to suggest i didnt actually mean it was specifically half, and hardly a scientific statement was it. But then i was t expecting someone to be so pedantic about terminology used.
If your asking me, no i dont use penns, never have, but have never commented on them in either a positive or negative way. I use daiwa, have had 2 sets of reels for 10 years and never changed them. Tournaments which i actually own, and accept they are pretty awful but do a job, and a set of basias (i swapped silver basis, for customs, but had the silvers for 10 years and swapped purely for cosmetic reasons)

No I'm not one of those people, and yes I've taken being called pedantic as offence. The penns are fantastic as the line lay and clutch are brilliant, the build quality is too, and at the price point represent amazing vfm. The only reason I no longer use them is because they dont fit the alps 18mm reel seats I have on my rods. So I use the new daiwa 45s which are decent, and just a bigger version of the daiwa mentioned by the op, and they aren't as good in any of those departments imo. Is that justified enough for you?

I have Fox FX9's on my 10ft set up. Soon to have some 12ft rods, , the reels I am going for are Daiwa 45 SCW QD OT.
The Fox not the best built reels, tbf though I have had them nearly 3 years and they are still going strong.

I currently use Shimano 14000 XSD's and I have been looking at the Emblems recently as the line going under the line guard of the Shimmys is doing my head in. They are really appealing to me.
I have heard great things about the Penn's and a friend has the Sonik 10000 too which appeal to me as I can get them cheap, although not sure I want the weight increase over the XSD's

Is the weight really that important though? As rods sit on bankstick for 99% of their time in use it makes no odds imo.

Agreed, I've got the 8000 penns and they're massive but I've not had any issues with finding them overly heavy during casting or playing fish, but then I came from daiwa emblem x 5500t which are a fairly substantial reel in their own right.

I use Shimano, Daiwa and Penn reels regularly on river, lake and beach. Every make and model will occasionally trap line under the spool. I have not really noticed any one reel is worse than another. Possibly Daiwa Cross casts. Overloading the spool will cause this problem on any reel. I can't ever recall this problem on my old baitrunner Aero 6010s

A guess it's all relative, going strong after 3 years....... I'd expect 20 years plus then again they may well last that long.

I gave up commenting on reels after the first set of 5500 XTB shimano's came out ..... Everyone went crazy for them, as they did the following XTC and XTD's .... but they were such a poor reel in comparison to other Shimano reels, but so many Shimano fan boys were having none of it. They were perfect size though and the only option at this size when the XTBs first came out so I did have about 9 of them (price dropped very quickly form original rrp). I then "upgraded" to XTC's (cos i thought they couldne be any worse ... wrong! ... so i havent bought a mid level shimano pit style reel since). The Daiwa Linear-X at the time were streets ahead in use but but the body was just a bit big, heavy and not the prettiest. Thankfully there is far more choice now and even the budget reels will generally last many many years if not treted to harshly.. I dont own anything of Fox but have the FX9's and FX11's and really like them myself.

If you buy the emblem 35s you wont get rid of the issue , if you use flourcarbon that is. Emblems 35s dont have a line guard like the tournements or the emblem black edition I would assume the 45s dont either.
I thought id try out the emblems instead of my really old ultegras and they still have the issue im tempted to put the flouro on some emblem black editions see if that solves the issue. Ironic really that the cheapest of the 3 reels seems most likely to be the best one for flourocarbon. With Mono the emblem 35s are lovely by the way, although they could have a folding handle

It certainly is for me or I wouldn't of mentioned it. Fully understand it might not be the be all and end all for some people and that's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinions but I do not want to add anymore weight to any of my rods.

Of the 2 reels you mentioned , I only have experience of the Fox FX11 as I purchased these not long after they first came out after going on a try a rod day with a Cotswold Rods rep on Durliegh Reservoir and was blown away by their performance to price ratio.
The line lay was fantastic and I was regularly hitting the clip( lead only) at 150 yards over water.
I had them for 3 seasons and had absolutely no problems with them whatsoever.
Hopefully this lot have put their Manpax in now
