Evening All,

Does anyone know who sells those 'fake' sweetcorn / maize hookbaits which are made as a food source (plastic is banned)

I think eclipse Baits make some called I corn, I'm sure they come in different colours and flavours too.

or get some cheap basemix/pop up mix and make your own, will be a lot more cost effective and can make them what ever colour/flavour you want?

Sorry to jump on this post but I'm looking for a hookbait to fish over maize which isn't plastic... i'd consider making my own but have no idea where to start really. Not sure who does a decent pop up mix?

both mainline and ccmoore do good pop up mixes, get a flavour and colour of your choice and follow the instructions, rather than rolling into balls pinch a bit off and squeeze it corn shaped. You could even just mix the base without colour or flavour, it will come out a nice pale cream colour and I'm sure would catch well in a pva bag. Add some normal basemix and you can make them balanced as well. Options are endless!

could use a piece of real maize with a chopped in half yellow dumbbell pop up under it (or inbetween 2 maize kernals) . I fish a plastic banned venue in france and that has seen me do fine.

If fake/ imitation baits are banned then i would consider doing the following:

Knock up a one egg mix of pop-up mix (Shilhams Quinoline yellow is my personal favourite) with whatever attractors you fancy, much as for single hookbait fishing. I would then fridge this overnight before rolling it out to appx 5m thickness with a rolling pin. I then take a small punch from one of the kids play-doh sets (that looks just like a kernel of corn and is the right size!) and punch out a whole load of 'kernels'. Boil them up, dry them for a few days and the jazz them up with some of the same attractors as went in the mix and youre laughing

If you cant find a punch then you could always make one out of shaped aluminium (from a beer can) stuck on the end of a biro...thats what a friend uses for similar results

That's a great tip. I once spent a whole afternoon shaping them by hand just to fill one small tub. It took AGES.

granted I haven't used them for a while but never had any issues with them, I'm sure there are mixes available from most companies these days and likely a lot cheaper, just trying to help the chap so feel free to throw up some better and accessible brands for him to try...

I would use real maize topped by yellow foam if you want it balanced or popped up. Worked very well for me in the past.
