Former mad keen angler starting up again after 10 years away and I'm wondering why the 2nd hand market is really flat?
eBay, FB marketplace has hardly any decent gear for sale and what there is is way over priced.
Thoughts?

Less people selling 2nd hand gear due to the lockdown.
Once all restrictions have been eased it will pick up but it will take some time though.

I have sold on a fair bit of stuff on here over the years, but I've found it hard work and I get an impression that punters think you must be desperate and almost want it to be given away. Example, have a pod up, brand new and unused, 75 quid cheaper than shops. Someone offered 250 which is 100 less shop price but then wanted to haggle about postage!

Recently back after a 5 year break, got some really good deals but been let down a lot with sellers not sending/ couriers losing parcels etc.
Last piece of my puzzle is a set of banksticks currently lost within Hermes somewhere.
I did find I had to travel a little further that I would have for a good deal though

hermes are struggling at the moment
im waiting for a none fishing parcel to arrive it should of arrived 3rd june i emailed the seller they appoligised and said hermes are struggling to keep up with demand

I had a parcel delivered by Hermes the other day,the lady in a little white van said they just can't keep up.She said it is worse than Christmas

My experience is that Hermes has improved in recent years, not perfect but better. I don't hear such stories as TV's being delivered by chucking them over a garden fence anymore.
On Joe Lycett Got Your Back programme there was a feature on a Hermes centre that was sending things to a local auction house rather than being delivered so it does go on but I think it's isolated and generally much improved.

Some stuff for sale second hand well above the retail price 🤷♂️ I see a Leeda rogue pod £33 brand new, went on eBay second hand for £40 plus postage 😂 maybe it's me but I just don't get it

The classifieds are not the be all and end all. I've been here yonks and haven't really bought anything.

I'd hang on mate, once furlough ends and the mass redundancies start all the selling sites will deluged with every bit of kit you can think of at bargain prices.

If you are selling the price on here won't be as good as FB or eBay but the buyers are more reliable people actually turn when they say.
The problem is this forum doesn't get anywhere as much traffic as it's used to do so people sell at better prices elsewhere but you still get good stuff for sale oh here.
Agree with previous post unfortunately another couple months you will see some bargains appearing with current situation

I've sold a fair amount of gear on eBay. Always seems to sell for a good price. Especially if you get the auction to finish on a Sunday evening. For example sold a small beanie unhooking mat, no name Brand for £25 plus postage. I think it only cost me £15 in the first place.

How do you buy something on Facebook?
I've never done it before but there's a product for £300 on there that I want.
Do you just send over £300 and 'hope' that the random stranger on the internet sends it to you without any buyer protection?

Also if you have the auction ending on the last Sunday of the month helps as most people get paid on the last week of the month so spend a few quid more than say the middle of the month.

If it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Meet up if possible so you can view before parting with your hard earned.
If your buying blind then always pay via PayPal goods and services, never ever pay via friend/family or bank transfer as your not protected if things go bad.
As long as you stick to these rules you will be fine

Also if buying from face ache or gumtree always meet them somewhere neutral , I do this and also slightly change my post code as you really don't know who your dealing with but saying that the people I've dealt with on gumtree have been spot on 👍

I've bought plenty off facebook over the years but you have to have your wits about you. Check out the sellers profile - if they look dodgy they probably are. Always pay using Paypal goods and services. The seller pays a small fee, so for the sake of a few quid if its something I really want I'll offer to cover the fees. If they still don't want to use paypal then run a mile. Collection is always best but not always possible. I've sold a lot on gumtree, (several rods, reels, and a huge amount of other things ). I've never bothered about people coming to my house but I normally restrict buyers view of things as far as possible.
My experience is also good in that all have been polite and pleasant to deal with.

Seems anyone can get into the classifieds now, theres a guy with less than 30 posts and a month on here has a thumb 
On facebook regularly I see tackle put up for sale by obviously dubious sellers who for example despite transparent lame cover story's to the contrary do not have a clue about the quality or value of their items for sale in countless cases even asking how much do they go for! Also spelling of the products name and the choice of grammar when attempting descriptions screams buyer beware. This is a problem not just on Facebook but gumtree and others too. Personally the forum classifieds is a much safer, trustable source for used potential purchases although locality can be restrictive I'd rather have the ability to meet and buy off a more trusted, genuine seller of legitimate goods anytime the opportunity allows it. I do accept that for the most part the sites mentioned above are very useful and convenient but I can't help being annoyed and angry when blatantly obvious nicked gear is sold....not to mention bought....I'm ranting sorry.🤐🤯

Unfortunately your always gonna get people slip through the net and also people that are gonna try and get to 100 posts as quick as possible,I no I'm only on 80 odd posts but for me joining it was a welcome relief from the lockdown and was a blessing,maybe in the future I might buy or sell something on the classifieds .I suffer from depression and anxiety and I tend to give bits away to charities for that reason but most of all to start up courses that run through the summer near me

The second hand market prices are so strong on Ebay the sellers must be having a field day take off the fees which at times can be a £1 and PayPal sometimes your getting the same but in some cases more than new price,but then I suppose you get buyer protection etc but for the measly saving you might as well buy brand new. If I was looking for second hand my first port of call would be gumtree if it was local then tackle trader

Some of the Solar gear is going for silly money and there are quite a few collectors, seen ads with stuff in display cabinets, each to their own......but on the dubious side there's quite a lot of fake stuff being passed of as Solar, Kodex swing arms, ball clips, monkey satellite systems, bobbins and as of late stainless end caps and insert....originals had been selling for £100 for 3 sets a while back and came up very rarely, now its every week! I'm on 1 of the fb pages and one of the pics is of a bag of hundreds of them as a warning.
I did ask the chap at Solar a few years ago if they might consider bringing back a retro range as I'd regrettably sold some of my gear when I gave fishing up for a while , he said there wouldn't be a demand, times moved on, and conflict of products.....think hes wrong about the demand and time, conflict maybe right.
Just to add, I don't think refreshing the old stuff with Carbon collars and differently designed grips is what I'd call progress...maybe get away with the sod though.

theres some right chancers out there trying to flog fox campsite stuff s rare as fox havent had some items in stock due to shipping etc with covid19...people are paying stupid money for fox bucket carryall, camolite easy mats..its crazy

To be honest, I rarely buy new these days. With the vast amount of cheap mass produced under tested stuff out there these days, I would rather spend the same money on a 10 year old rod, because a "Vader" or a "Riot" will probably fail to see double digits in lifespan.
Managed to get three mid range Daiwa rods and three Emblem X's for a whopping £170. People are either desperate for the money, or just desperate to clear out the shed during covid. Then again, the volume is nowhere near where it used to be.

I still fish with a vintage Solar set up.
I've never felt the need to change to anything else.
I did start collecting stuff over 10 years ago, but even then prices were on the up. People are now selling empty packets on ebay!

I recently sold a Trakker small coolbox on eBay and it fetched £38 plus p&p. I only paid around £10 new back in around 2010. I've never viewed Trakker as a collectible brand. I get it that the cool box is discontinued so people will pay more but nearly £40 for a reasonably cheap n cheerful coolbox is amazing.
However last week a Trakker green plastic 5 litre water container went for high 30's plus p&p. I bought one of these for around a tenner a couple of years ago. It's a bog standard container with no special features and as far as I'm aware they are still in production, certainly still available in shops so what is that all about?
Maybe time to dig out the Badger gear

Iv Been looking at the solar page. Amazed how much things go for! My set up of 3 - adjustable hockey sticks, chunky chains, but bangers, carbon heads, ball line clips were estimated at around £180.
All my gear Is second hand, got 3 x century ngs years back for £290, they used to be around that each!

I dong know why but they are the jackpot I've seen them fetch nearly 60 pound think they were only 25 new and I didn't think they were particularly good

I'd say you will do ok with the reels, Scopes seem to be one thing that don't hold their value unless they are the light TCs or the 4.5s

Unfortunately that's exactly what it is. Stocks are either low or out of stock completely, which has forced the second hand prices up.
