I am going to try using an Iphone 11 Pro as my only camera for fishing photography.
I know a separate camera/DSLR etc will be much better, but the quality of photos a phone can now do are more than good enough for a few quick capture shots.
I am not publishing them anywhere or printing them out at large sizes.
A couple of questions for anyone that has this phone...
How does it perform in low light - do you have an additional flash to help?
How do self takes work - stick it on a tripod/bankstick - but is there a mode where it will just keep firing shots until you go back?

Done some more research and self takes probably require the watch as a remote, with 3 or 10 sec delay for each shot in timer mode.
Not ideal, but its rare I need to do self takes anyway.

I use the Photo timer + app for self takes on my iPhone works great takes multi shots , has custom timer , can set delay in between shots

Hi I use the self timer app on my iphone 9 which has an involemeter for self takes which has given perfect results on a tripod, I have had some atmospheric landscapes blown up to 20x30 inches with perfect quality results
That said I prefer DSLR portraits in daylight or when someone is present.

Can't you set the camera to take pictures via voice control in the “accessibility” menu ?. I've not tried but I could be worth a look ??

I have a 5d full frame DSLR, to be honest I have not looked to see if it has voice control but as I have a lot of time on my hands I'll check once I finish work.

I used the whistle app on my iPhone 6s last year which was fine. I've now got an 11 but yet to use it for fishing. I also struggled with light on the iPhone 6, night shots were not great at all.

I have the iPhone 11 Pro Max and I use it for all my pictures, if you need it for self takes just get a tripod and us the whistle app bud
The only gripe for me with self-takes on a phone is the quality of the forward facing cameras, never as good as the rear ones and can often look very over-exposed...
When i use my phone for self-takes, (Huawei P20 Pro) i was framing the picture using the forward facing camera then turning it around to get the better quality of the rear camera....using the whistle app it was a case of hoping for the best but more often than not could crop it into something half decent!

I made myself up a gizmo from different bits I purchased of ebay so I can use the the better back camera on my iPhone it allows me to see what the back camera is seeing using a mirror like it does when you use a camera with a flip around screen

All good advice thanks guys. Sounds like it will be fine, especially with the timer apps.
Anyone use an additional flash?
I will try out night mode when we can get back out, but suppose an extra flash cant hurt.

I don't use a phone camera but I won't always use the flip screen. I put a mark on my net pole with a silver sharpie that sets the distance between mat and camera, and set it at knee height. Keeps it quick, easy and consistent to set up

You'd think Siri would be a good option here but I think you can only get it to open the camera app up, I don't think you can get her to take a photo? Would be ideal if it worked

I use Camera Plus with my IPhone 6 Plus which is much better than the IPhone software especially in low light, it has multiple timer settings and will work with a blue tooth dongle and has a voice count down from 5 seconds to shot.

Whilst they always come in for stick on here, at the very mention of their name, I'm trying to cut down what I carry, so I just use my ridgemonkey bivvy light for extra lighting when taking photos. Can't see the point in carrying another light. I'm not into photography enough to carry an external flash. Plus they do a mount for it that means you can shove it on another bankstick off to the side out of shot. I've found that it helps my camera focus better in zero light conditions and if I shine the light on say a background bush/tree etc just behind me then you get a better photo. I'm no expert but it seems to help.

Yep you are right. To give yourself a reasonable starting point each time, you need a fixed distance from you and a fixed height of the camera each time to get yourself in the ball park each time.
I lay my landing net handle down from the edge of the mat, then set my camera at the same height each time. I'm using a small dlsr so I also set my lens to the same number. Obviously you won't need to do this with a camera phone.

No problem, I've been really pleased with the tripod and it packs down well too for the price.
Re framing, good points and that's pretty much what I try and do now - the issue was more so when using Portrait mode. I've found it difficult to get the depth / focus right when doing self takes using this mode, but if there was a way to get around this or see the screen that would be ideal!

Looking at some of the apps, you can shoot in RAW with normal focus and leave plenty of room for error on the framing.
As long as you capture it all well you can then crop it properly and blur the background a bit with editing tools.

You can set it up using the voice control settings within the iPhone it's self. Fairly easy vid to follow when you get to the bit where you tap the screen tap it serval times before saving the settings. When you set the camera up for a self take just select the portrait camera mode .

Could always get a tablet and mirror what the camera is looking at so you can frame things properly. I know it's a bit of extra kit having to take a tablet as well, does solve a problem though 👍

I have done this with a Ipad & Iphone 12 pro max. Works a treat.
As other have said i use a little bluetooth clicker on the phone and works great. I have also found it better in portrait mode to try it without the flash first and let the phone automatically choose, I have had low light pictures come out really well when it uses its own night mode to adjust the photo. Just takes upto 3 seconds to capture the picture after clicking.

Do you still rate the Note 4, you can pick one up for £40 nowadays if you all you are after is a camera.
What about night time shots, have you worked out how to do those?

I only use a phone for my self takes also upgraded to 12 pro max few months ago but was using an iphone X and was really good at night using also the bivvy light and amazing quality.
What I use instead of those bluetooth controllers is an App called "Whistle Camera"!
That app in my opinion just makes everything much easier you set the time you want and just whistle and that will activate the camera.
Also a tip regarding that app is the ads on it, but if you put on airplane mode or just turn off the network no ads will show
The tripod i use is one from NGT not the best but at the time was the cheapest and good enought for what i need, but this days you have way better ones for around the same price

Little tip for you, get a bigger light and move it further away from you when filming in the bivvy. I never made it past the first couple of minutes, photo tips from ghost face dude blowing highlights out ain't for me

I used my iPhone 11 pro for fishing self takes when I don't want to take a DLSR and tripod - usually when I am stalking carp or lure fishing. I just got the 13 pro max to replace it, but things are much the same camera wise. So simple to get decent images and let's face it, the IPhone pro models have the best camera systems of any smart phone. So, easy peasy... just get a bluetooth remote and a smart phone tripod mount off Amazon. The attach to a bank stick or you can use the JAG self take stick as I do. The remote is excellent, you don't need to point it at the phone and it re-focusses the camera if you move around with the fish. It can also trigger the video on/off. The mount is great and you can set it up in portrait or landscape. Very stable and has a spirit level so you can get everything lined up. Like I said, super simple and results are very good - not as good as my 6D with a prime lens, but good enough for fishing anyway. Never thought I'd use a phone for self takes, but that day came when I got the iPhone 11 pro a couple of years back. Links to the goodies...

Hi I was wondering is there a way of using this app in the portrait mode to take numerous pictures at once I'd like to set it up to take minimum 10 pictures in the portrait mode I can only see the speed available in the photo mode, also would you recommend for night pictures in the app it looks great so far thanks for recommending 😀
