What I have learnt is most people are observing the social distance rules...

However, tonight I'm seeing cars with sat navs, roof boxes and very clean, smart out of county cars, range rovers, posh Audi, Beemers, obviously these people are still travelling to have a holiday...or second home..

Devon and Cornwall is closed..

What they don't realise,is locals in this area Will, report them...and give a nice go faster stripe too,boot... free of charge...

Over ,650 greedy ,selfish...people have been reported, spoken to and sent packing...

Time and again, government is saying NO unessential travel,a second home,or holiday is not essential.., at this time..

These people think they are, special above the law, they are not, just got a bit of money...is all,...seriously, I think the strength of feeling about this is huge..

However, there is a serious msg to my post, not to be taken lightly..

My neighbour,he's a parish councillor, in touch with all the other parish councillor's, they have a list of..

Airbnbs
Sykes
Cornish cottages
Second home owners....

All have been notified of the travelling laws, especially, now this weekend,so far....according to my neighbour..eleven groups in this parish, visited by them, and asked to leave..

The hospital is always over busy, they can't deal with any extra demand, because a surfer, for example, who is 'self isloating'gets Ill

I'm far from exzenaphobic, as I invivte many people down to fish,foc....

Sounds like criminal misuse of protected data there

Don't think Cornwall is unique in having overly busy hospitals, I have four hospitals inside a 20 minute drive, each dealing with a local population greater than the summertime population of Cornwall.
If I'd had a country bolthole and the funds to ride this out I would have been out of London a month ago

Our hospital is one hour, and ten mins away ,mate, that's either Derriford,or Treliske..

Its not just the Southwest,Wales,Scotland,Scottish Highlands ,Cumbria, etc,etc...they all saying stay away, come back later..

Even if a person had a country bolt hole, which was not their main address,ie a second home,in this current situation, people are being advised/told to remain at their permanent address, which I think is correct...the press, and Tourism bosses are advocating full time residents to contact them, with info regarding the use of bolt holes/second homes, whatever you want to call them...

This has been all on our media in this area...and is perfectly correct,no one needs to travel,at this time...like I already touched upon, there have been cases already of holiday makers bringing 19 down,.....hence...

That's right duggs,it is fear based, most probably the fear ,unease and sense of forboding that undoubtedly you have,I'd be the same.....

Its the same for everyone, regardless of where they live, everyone I know of is looking out for everyone else...if someone, who is 'self isolating'..read coming surfing,...and clearly not resident, most around here WILL report them..

In one shop, five miles away, you have to prove you are resident,or you won't get served,...its only a small community ,we are looking after our own...

If that makes us vigilantes, then so be it.....and as for lashing out ,they can't because they are morally ,ethically and socially not meant to be here at the moment...

Same as most other rural parts looking out for each other..

Nothing wrong with that,is there...?

The government quite clearly states,No non essential travel, information, says quite clearly as well,no second homes.to be visited at THIS time.,its non essential, its all over the media,Scotland, Wales,Cumbria, etc etc...not just Kernow..

Hence the hashtag thing..

#comebacklater....(ive already explained this tbfair)..

As for snide comment about summertime, most second home owners bring much of their supplies with them, they take more than they give,..Malcolm Bell,Cornish tourism chief states this.

Is that for every case. If someone drives to their holiday home and never leaves it and gets shopping delivered. Is that also not okay and spreading the virus?

I get your point but a blanket statement is a bit presumptuous isn't it?

As for lack of resource. I live in Northamptonshire. We have two hospitals for over 725,000 people (2011 consensus, it's much more than that now). I think everywhere has very limited medical resource. Rich people normally have private healthcare anyway so it wouldn't impact on the NHS much anyway?

Not a troll. But your essential and someone else's essential is likely different. Refugees flee war torn places for their safety. Apparently this virus is a war. They could claim to be refugees from the war torn London. Look outside your box, it's not ideal but think why they are doing it. I'm hardly making myself look stupid am I. That's you bud with your constant negativity about everything.

Maybe for them, living in their holiday home is looking after their family and themselves away from the most infected place in the country?

No point talking about respect when you don't respect people's decisions, whether you agree with them or not, and advocate keying their vehicles and flat out saying they are a**eholes and moan about it. Do you understand the word hypocrite?

Is it not selfish of the moaners to not even consider the feelings of others regardless of their actions being against government guidelines. Going for a holiday and retreating to safer areas away from the epicentre of the virus in this country are two different things are they not?
Selfish people that don't want to share safety and resources are just as bad as selfish people who travel are they not?

No they are not, would you want them travelling to your area potentially carrying the virus spreading it to you or your loved ones. Its quite simple stay home, stay safe, save lives. There is a reason the guidelines are there. They are small communities with limited resources, what gives you or anyone the right to put even more strain on that.People are quite happy to live in the big cities making big money when things are going well, that's where they live so stay there and ride it out like the rest of us are doing.I hope if someone travels to a second home gets taken ill the local hospital refuses treatment and saves the stretched resources for locals only

If you had a brain cell between you you'd be able to read that I don't condone that they are doing at all. But you ignored that to try and be aggressive sad acts didn't you. Posted abuse and wished ill on others. You're the classic example of the virus in society.

So really what we have learned is that fear will bring out the natural instinct to protect yourself and your loved ones, on both sides of the argument.
Without the small communities there would be no tranquil safe havens, without the 2nd home owners (probably paying 40% tax and x2 council tax) the under equipped smaller capacity hospitals would be even more limited.
Six of one, half a dozen of the other and an argument with no end

Funny thing is I know no one with a holiday home, have any affiliation to either places and I'm not rich and I'm following the government guidance. I can still see the reasoning behind those decisions being made by people that are going to their holiday homes though. I think anyone can, even the ones that are upset about it, not that they'll concede that they can.

It's just a shame people want to wish ill on others and harm them and vandalise their property instead of in fact leaving them be to isolate in those homes and concentrate on their own health and well-being regardless of what others are doing.

All I see plastered everywhere is people moaning at others to stay indoors so they can enjoy walks themselves not coming in to contact with anyone. If anyone is really concerned then don't leave your house and anything anyone else does has no influence on your potential infection risk. Simple as that. All this fear and vile behaviour from people just shows who won't have friends when the dust settles and they've exposed themselves in their true light. People are showing a side of themselves they've probably never shown anyone and all it has done is show that humans are the real virus and danger to one another

Hi Greekskii,

" Did I say I condoned it? "

I'd deem it essential to escape the worst hit part of the country tbh.

I live in rural Norfolk, and our MPs have told second home owners not to travel here.
They can bring the virus with them, and there are instances of that having occurred.
Our medical resources and supermarkets are finite and in keeping with the capacity afforded a rural county.
Those looking to escape their main homes can remain as safe as anyone anywhere if they self isolate and follow the guidelines. There is no particular advantage in safety in traveling to a second home.
Over Easter, the police are out in force, checking vehicles and turning round those making non essential journeys. The guidelines are crystal clear, stay and isolate where you live.

You're not winning this arguement mate.
A tactical withdrawal is in order.

Alright Boris. Settle down with your war chat.

Let's look at what you're saying another way. Norfolk has resources, London is out of them, well until the excel hospital is running at capacity. So in the ideology of looking after each other as a nation, should those resources not be used for saving lives of people who need it now, not who might need it in the future?

I'm trying to ‘Win” anything. There's nothing to win Your mindset stinks, all about conflict and that alone.

Hi noj,

Not sure whether second home owners bring any more value to small coastal communities than if those properties were occupied by full time local residents who work within the county and pay all their taxes there.
It's a sad case that in many small coastal and rural communities, so many properties are second homes and unoccupied for most of the year that, they are turned into ghost towns.

Hi Greekskii,

You were doing ok until your last sentence.
You need to control your emotions and debate the issue with constructive criticism.
When you explode into personal abuse, it just shows that you've lost the argument.

OK, back to the debate.
London is not out of capacity, they have only just started using the Nightingale, which will have 4000 ICU beds.
London, pro rata, probably has as much contingency as has Norfolk.
A few thousand people travelling to second homes from London will make virtually no difference to its medical capacity, but could make a significant difference to a rural county.

Not everything is about winning. It's true you are conflict orientated. War terminology and the concept of winning shows that. Healthy debate has no winners just open minds.

I think everyone agrees that every NHS is under resourced. No matter where that is. But open beds where there are none should be utilised surely? As I said, but you ignored, the excel hospital is not yet running at full capacity so the resource isn't there just yet

The smaller communities benefit from economic strength elsewhere in the country, no arguments really.
Those paying higher tax elsewhere, as crude as it sounds, own more of that little rural hospital than the locals.
Luckily that's not how it actually works but the argument is there

I'm disgusted with greekskis comments, they were in fact veiled insults to the vast majority of rural people..

His narcissistic views at best are flawed, dangerous and have no substance...

#comebacklater,is exactly what it suggests, come back to the countryside, when this is over not now..

My local MP, is heavily involved in #comeback later and asking people nicely to stay away at this time, most are doing this..

However,my MP,is a very proud countryman,carp angler,sea angler,and other stuff...

As I said greekski, you've gone too far,and thus my MP ,part of #comebacklater, will be made fully aware of your stance on this ...especially at this time

Your views, however thinly veiled, cleverly worded are beyond the pale...👎👎👎

While I can see both sides, government advice seems pretty clear, no non-essential travel.

Strange that Govt minister Robert Jenrick seems to think it's fine to return to a rural area, despite the fact that the government seems to have been disproportionately effected by Covid19, so he could well be carrying it. Can't imagine he'd be that welcome in his village shop.

They should give the police the ability to fine proper money if they want it to stop. A bloke I know here in Italy got a 4k fine for being on the way to his holiday home last week, everyone I know is staying put this weekend.

Hi noj,

Yes, I take your point and agree when viewed from a national perspective.
The city of London, only a small area in size, contributes billions in tax revenue.
I think, in part, it depends on how rural areas and tranquil coastal resorts are valued.
In purely monetary terms, I suspect they would be considered unviable, if left to their own devices and unaided, but if valued, as they are, for rural charm, natural beauty and areas to visit and to holiday, then a price has to be paid to maintain those areas and facilities.
I think tourism and holiday visits help to maintain these places, along with rural agriculture etc. but, as I said, holiday homes in abundance, can destroy the ambiance and charm of small communities.

Edit,
It's nice to have a sensible conversation with someone.

Hi Greekskii,

Healthy debate has no winners just open minds.

Really? I suggest you watch the Cathy Newman debate with Jordan Peterson on U tube.

Yes, open beds should be utilised and there are still plenty available in the Nightingale with 3500 to come.

Conflict orientated eh?
It certainly wasn't me who was trying to create conflict and bad feeling between members here and those, like me, who came from the black forum, and attempt to get threads closed down until Cam put a stop to it.

We all need each other for society to function, times like these you realise the wealth isn't distributed fairly but we generally do ok if you look around the globe at some people's existence.
The big cities are a huge earner AND drain on the country so as always it's an ongoing argument with no conclusion because the books rarely balance favourably for all

Hi noj,

Yes, I agree. We can argue about a fairer distribution of wealth re wages etc. but the bigger picture tells us that, western, democratic, market led economies, produce the most successful, wealthy, sophisticated and peaceful societies in human history, and compared with a lot of the world, we are fortunate to have been born here.

Yeah I'm not thick mate. I understand the situation fully. Probably more than others as I read up about it from various sources, not just British media and government.

I'm not a troll, I just wondered if you'd seen it from the ‘not welcomes' point of view. You've shown you haven't. And you are unwilling to. That's fine. That's you. I won't insult you for it like you have done to me, some failed threat to tell your local MP about me as I am some sort of dangerous person for asking you some questions. Whatever rattled your cage, maybe you need to look inside yourself and the reasons for your hatred and encouragement of hate crimes and ask yourself why? Why did someone asking you to look from their point of view infuriate you so much you felt you had to insult them and try to threaten them? You've got time on your hands, maybe you should use it wisely.

Is that another failed threat? Listen to me carefully?

Issues understanding stuff? I understand perfectly why you don't want people in your village. I get it. I told you I did. I just asked if you got why people wanted to be there. You don't. You made that clear.

You've blown your lid over nothing really and it's sad that you did. My intent was as above, Ive said that already. You don't want to understand that, instead insult me and report me to your local MP for some odd reason.

Of course I'm going to wind you up when you turn out so aggressive from the off.

But tell me one thing, can you see it from their point of view as to why they would want to see this out away from the British epicentre?

Hi Greekskii,

I'll give an answer if I may.

Most of the people who can afford 2nd homes on the coast and in the country, live in affluent areas, in spacious, often detached houses with gardens.
And as such, they are in a position to stay perfectly safe, if they self isolate, more so than those in high rise flats and crowded, urban estates.
I suggest their desire to travel to their holiday homes is not based on safety, but a desire to sit out the lockdown in a nice, holiday setting. They are not considering the pressure they might be applying to rural communities and medical services, they're just going for a jolly.
They know the rules of the lockdown, but are arrogant enough to think they don't apply to them.

Sweeping stereotypes based on very little evidence. Your opinion of those that have holiday homes in rural places. You being one of the rural ones as you said earlier.
No matter the house they live in they still live in the epicentre for the virus in this country. You'd be much less safe in London than anywhere rural regardless of what house you live in.

Again. I don't condone it but you can see a reason to want to. Nicer surroundings being a bonus
Of course.

I don't know Greekskii from Adam (although in this case it seems apparent that the angry bloke in the West Country is called Adam, so I obviously can tell them apart..) but it's unfair to call him a troll. He's just pointing out that those who are arriving in rural communities have their motives, that they themselves see as valid. It's hard to see the 'bigger picture' when it's the wellbeing of you and your family that's on the line. I'm sure that's true for the vast majority of us.

BTW I bought my first Trangia stove in 1984, and now use a Swedish bought dark grey hard anodised 27.

Hi Greekskii,

Both Wandle and I live in rural areas and suggest we are probably better placed than you to make observations about the affluence of 2nd home owners in our areas, from the evidence of our own eyes and info from others in our counties.
They are perfectly safe in London in their areas if they observe the lockdown and especially if they have their groceries delivered. It's not the blitz, with bombs raining down.
Yes, I can see the reason they want to. Have a jolly in the country or at the seaside and stuff the rules. They only apply to other people.

My cat's got a second home.

She goes a few doors down for extra food and to hang out in the kitchen...

edit - to be fair to her though, she does know when it's time to drop a dead mouse - if you get my drift....

Maybe being the aggrieved in the situation is putting you in a single track mindset which you cannot see out of. You think they are all doing it for a jolly, I think if you asked them they'd tell you different. You've put them all in the same boat without a second thought and zero intent to even see it from any other angle than your own.

Hi Greekskii,

Whatever you suggest my mindset to be is immaterial, given the fact that it is against the rules of the lockdown for people to travel to 2nd homes. I don't care what their motives are. To try and ignore the rules and potentially, put rural communities at extra risk is selfish and smacks of self entitlement .
Many of us on here could go and fish deserted waters within the rules of social distancing, but we don't because we feel we have a moral obligation to observe the lockdown.
2nd homeowners have perfectly adequate main homes to stay in and self isolate and that is where they should stay.
There is really no arguement you can make on their behalf.
Not sure why you keep flogging a dead horse.

I asked a question about if the reason they are doing it had been considered. That was all

We all know the rules. We all know why they shouldn't travel. I asked about if anyone from these hostile rural communities had actually bothered to ask why.

Cheeky 😝 fecker 😂 Braders.

My better half was in waitrose while I slummed it in Aldi 😂

We've also got a Co-op here in Sandbach but my butler was on gardening duties that day. 😂

I bought 4 brand new Fox rx+ at the northern angling show and I'm itching to get out and blank on them.

What have I learnt from the Lockdown is
A). Aldi toilet rolls are still useless.
B). I know how to fiddle with the fox rx+ settings in the bedroom 😂
C). My phone now inserts "Lockdown" in predict a text.

Want I've learnt from lockdown.

1. My local farm shop has a very good service and produce. Well worth the extra few miles past my local supermarket. I will be supporting them more in the future.

2. Digging the garden is hard work if it has been neglected for a few years but very satisfying when it's done.

3.There is a lot of helpful and friendly people out there, unfortunately they are balanced by some the other end of the spectrum.

4.This also applies to fishing forums and I can see the mods have a difficult job keeping the right balance with some discussions.

5. Some do not seem to realise why second home owners might not always be the most welcome in some areas, (apart from disregarding lockdown rules of course).
To explain if anyone really doesn't know. In some areas house prices have been pushed up to such an extent that local people cannot afford to live there. My wife has seen areas that second homes make up 50% or possibly even more, which of course destroys the community. Very few residents in winter, so the local school, pub, shop, post office etc. all close and it becomes virtually a ghost town.

Amazon prime and net flix, those 15 holiday homes you own and let out in Cornwall must be a very nice little earner. Some way to go to catch up with me though may buy another dozen if this property price crash that's being predicted happens.

"15 holiday homes ". I've only got 7 but they are villa's.

Living up't North its quite easy to get exercise waking our whippets 🐶 every day, yet with fewer cars on the road the sound of our wooden clogs are deafening.

I'm still working through the Aldi toilet 🚽 rolls I panic bought but I'm getting used to them now and I've mastered my technique of only "breaking through" on the 3rd wipe.
I suppose you "Saffeners" ignore the social distancing policy and let your butlers have the task of cleaning one's botty! 😂 😂

Take care down there and keep safe.

Well I hope you guys with all these holiday homes will reduce the rents on them in this time of need and also consider a further reduction in line with property prices if they drop.
Think of the poor politicians that have lost their jobs for breaking lockdown, they need our help, especially after all they have done for us.
I have already offered discounts to several politicians and celebrity chefs who want to relocate here so my conscience is clear.

I can't help with staying off them, I've given up 4 times, lasted over a year each time, but keep making the mistake of having one or a cigar when drinking, usually after a period of stress. And then before I know it I'm back on 30 a day

I think I'm 6 weeks in now, only hard thing now is the feeling of forgetting something when I leave the house, patting every pocket down and thinking 'what's missing' for ten minutes

The 'smokers cough' will probably kick up a gear for you soon, the lungs start clearing themselves, some of the crap that comes up is pretty

I find putting what you'd spend on fags in a pot a good incentive, pick a date in say 8 to 10 weeks and use the money for a self indulgent purchase

I used champix the first time round, but with some of the psychological side affects I think a doctor would be mental prescribing that right now

Thanks Duggs...I usually have a pot on the go and it never gets far past about 50 quid, then it's terminal tackle time ..Have my eye on a pair of Castizm QD feeder reels,so that will keep me going and will soothe the cough when it comes around. I've started getting sweaty hands and a bit irritable at times, but if it doesn't get any worse I should be ok. To be honest mate,6 weeks off 'em is heroic in my book, non smokers won't get what I mean. Keep at it Duggs.

what I learnt. or rather, had confirmed is that I am ideally suited to lockdown.

this year has been like a nice break from all the things I get obliged to do but would happily not.

family meals with inlaws etc.
parties
cinema
theatre
flying
crowds
shopping

I haven't missed the pubs. I saw my mates for a zoom drink up a few times
I don't like footy and sports etc.

The things I actually do like. Fishing and Cycling. Were in such high demand people couldn't get kit. but of course
we were all sorted for both as it is what we have always done.

As I quite like being at home, I have a functional garden with a basketball hoop, trampoline, weights, punchbag and hot tub.

(aside from people that have struggled financially and lost business which is awful and a ruined economy) I've enjoyed it.

The fact that by far the majority have called it lockdown and moaned incessantly about pubs and restaurants and holidays has made me realise just how odd I am.

I even enjoyed my kid being at home for months.

I gave up the cigs around 10 years ago , after finding that i had 2 dead areas of lung each the size of a 2 pence piece , that feeling of wanting one after a pint or a meal lasted around 18 months to 2 years , can't remember the last time i wanted one now , I was smoking 30 - 40 gauloises a day when i gave up ,they are a wake up call to the effects of cigarettes on the body ! 50 - 50 chance that they are going to get you eventually !
