Looking at purchasing new reels and wanting peoples views on best currently in production and available reels. Need to be able to cast 100yds plus on occasions. Going on 3.5lb infinity rods. Normally a shimano user but after reading the recent thread on slow oscillation thinking daiwa may now be the way to go ?
Daiwa ISO original. Not sure if they're still in production but still available new.
Great casting reels and rugged enough to deal with all sorts.
Time tested.
The new black version may well be as good or better but never used one personally and not been around long.

Original ISO is awesome but look at the newer version....utter perfection!
Really depends on the waters you fish...for the vast majority of waters the Castizm will be just as good.

Build quality wise I don't believe any are as good as what you have now, if I were looking for high end reels it would be a toss up between the new iso's or basia sld. On the plus side there's some good reels out now for less than a hundred quid a reel like the emcast 25A's I have on my scopes at £60 each and I would happily put them on my basia x45's.

Other than Infinities I can't think of another reel that's stood the test of time but the Tourney.
I think technically there are better reels about now, will they do the job any better...that's debatable, will they still be available in 20 years, not a chance.

A good example of what i am saying about good reels being available for a good price. The castizm feels better in hand than the emcast 25a but is barely noticeable on the rod in use and the non quick drag for me is better and I sold two of my four castizm's and bought four emcasts and still had money left.

I've always used Shimano as for me they always work and last years and years. Still using my old Ultegras and I even used the spare spools for about 3 years of beach fishing!
Not sure what the newer Ultegras are like but if I needed new reels they would always be Shimano. Hope this kinda helps

I'm the same since I switched over from Abu Cardinals.
My Shimano's have been used and abused. In 2004/5 I bought a set of Aerlex 8000's, for spodding, marker rod and fishing with. Other than the ones I sold to a mate, I still own the 2 on my marker and spod rods. They have been thoroughly tested, even being used at times for Bass fishing on the beach as well as spod and marker.
From 4000 Gte Baitrunners, 6010's, The Aerlex's, DL10000's which I still use for pike and carp fishing on smaller waters, to the Beastmaster 7000 XTA's I currently use. Not being funny, as nice as it would be, I don't find the need to spend silly big money on my reels. I don't necessarily want or need top range priced reels.
I can't imagine me using any other manufacturer than Shimano for fixed spool reels.

I have had too many daiwa reels collapse internally for my liking, back in my match fishing days I had two top flight daiwas turn into coffee grinders, recently had the same with an emblem spod, never had any issues with my shimmys! Using technium xsbs now as my main reels and aerlex's for spod and marker, wouldn't replace them with anything.

Interesting there are 3 recomendations for Tourneys. They must be the oldest design reel still in production. Are you guys using older reels or are they the same build quality now as when originally launched ? Is the black version same quality ?

I've owned new, old, originals, blacks, ss3000's and ss5000's. All as good as each other, with very subtle differences.
The 5000t's and 5000be's are the same reel with just a different case, graphics and spools - with very little looking after, they'll outlive any reel on the market.

I have had Shimanos since 1978 as I lived in the Far East and these were popular out there. I have owned Shimanos ever since...however...and its a very big however, I have also dabbled with Daiwa.
I am back in love with the Daiwa Emblem X in the new 5000T Black Edition version. May not have all the bells and whistles the Shimanos have, but with the Tournament spool they cast bloody miles and I know they will still be going strong in years to come.

Daiwa Powersurf 5000 QD (JDM) - excellent reel! I have two of them. Not so expensive as Basia, but very good quality! I purchased my reels in this shop:

Both the tourney and ISO are great reels, preferring the 6k marginally over the ISO for casting and certainly better with 13' Rods and heavier lines (20lb) etc.

Tourneys are shocking reels avoid unless you are another strange person that thinks noisy wobbly junk is trendy .Its simple do you want a fishing reel or just something that looks the part .Had lots of friends over the years who thought tourneys were the dogs when they got them but all ended up getting rid eventually

Imo it all depends what you want from a reel.
If you want nice and smooth out of the box then Shimmys are a good call.
If you want a reel that will last 20 years without a service then imo the Tournies can't be beaten.

Apologies, the best reels in production will always be subjective and not many will be able to comment from an impartial technical perspective.
Fwiw, IMHO, the watershed moment over the years was when things started to being made to break, rather than being built to last.
One such reel using the old tooling, (from when it was built to last as the reels are still in production today) are the Emblem Blacks. Same internals as the old blue (sought after) emblem Z's and are cheaper than they were new, some 15 years ago.

I own a set of tournaments, use them all the time, and love them. They do what they say on the tin and are solid.
But are they the best all round reel? I dont think so. Ive not used power aeros or isos but would guess they can do anything a tournie can, but in a far smoother and nicer way.
I have basias that do everything better than a tournie can, they are a pleasure to use in comparison. But i keep the tournies on a set of rods and use them if im going to be laying rods on the floor etc. Not that the basias would have an issue on the floor, just my choice.

Finally a balanced post about tournies
I get why people like them and yeah they last a long time but in terms of features, smoothness etc there must be literally 50 better mainstream reels out there now, many of them significantly cheaper
With regard to the op, personally i use iso's (original and new)....switched from being a 20 year shimano user about 5 years ago and havent looked back

Absolutely nothing a large Tackle dealer told me to get them over the basia a few years back stating they where the best Daiwa did. As mentioned I have ISOs as well but the crappy line guard similar to Shimarnos is just that. The ISOs should be serviced from new not that I have had mine done yet but they are without doubt clunky. They are marginally smoother that Tournies and and certainly quieter and lighter which balance well with my main rods however the tournies are superb with my 13' Balisters.
As for Shimarno the 10k was awesome and a cult reel sadly however parts are not available and this along with the poor line guard prevents me from using them although the original 8k specials I had 20 years ago are still going strong along with my Emblem Golds.
