Yeah, thanks for the advice. In retrospect, it the tribal was a very stiff 5lb tc spod rod, wasn’t particularly expensive so after reading comments and feedback from others, I’ll look more into them and figure out if there is some way of testing them before shelling out.

Thanks to all for your input, it’s been a great help.

Not all 13ft rods feel the same so perhaps you had a wiggle of an iffy one or because it was so different to the rods you were used to they felt wrong.
I had some shimano tx2 13ft intensity rods, they could cast a mile but felt dead in the hand and it was like swinging a scaffolding pole.
Always good to have a few chucks on a rod if you can. It will be different to your 12fters so may have to adjust the timing of release, etc to fully compress and feel like you are getting the most out of them.

I was the same. I tried 13s years ago and couldn't get on with them at all. Swore I'd never use a 13 again. And then mistakenly bought a 13 foot aviator spod and found it really easy to use, so much so that I struggle to cast my 12 footers as far as I can cast that. Now I would hesitate to buy some 13s to fish with if I needed to. The greens get such good feedback id definitely consider those

Thanks for that reply Vossy. Perhaps i need to revisit the 13ft rods in that case. It would be useful to test them before committing although Im not aware of anywhere that offers that near me.

If I can achieve the distance on a set of 13 greens and it feels comfortable I’d go for them and save some money like you say.

I totally get that but it might just have been that rod that didn't suit you.
I can't remember which one it is now but there's a Torrix which folk didn't get on with, really hard to find the release point when casting, as if the tip didn't belong to the butt section, all vague.

I had a look round last night and saw Terry Edmonds recommending the Kaizen Green or platinum 13' 4lb, high praise indeed when the green can be found for as little as sub £125 for 200 yards plus.

It should be easier to fall short with a 13' rather than thrash the life out of a 12' to get almost near it's max, which I read was near 180 yards for the iver.

There'd be a lot of change if you went the green, don't think you'd lose much if you don't like it and pass it on.

But, if your heart's set on 12', go for it 👍

My experience of using a 13ft rod was a Shimano Tribal TX-A spod rod and I just couldn’t get on with it. So it put me off 13ft rods entirely and just accepted Im clearly not someone who can cast with 13ft rods, whereas I know I can cast well enough with my 12ft’ers, both spod and rods. So I guess theres an element of not feeling comfortable after that experience of owning the Tribal rod for a while. Suffice to say I sold it.

Def Hi SIve ER over standard 12' Aviator Plus . . .but agree with others - for the price of a £50 used holdall why not go for 13'. . .?

Also, casting 150 yards is hard even with 13ft rods!

With respect, that is a crazy reason to limit yourself to 12” rods. you’re about to drop a grand on a set of rods, just spend the extra £80 or whatever and get a new rod bag too.

Ive got a 12ft hold-all and I don’t want to have to buy more luggage to accommodate 13ft rods. I think Ive settled on the FS Hi S Iver which will meet the distance I need, no more than 150yrds absolute max.

If it really is range it's 13'. Maybe get a casting lesson with 12', 12'6" & 13' to see what suits you.

If you want to cast a long way then why limit yourself with only 12ft rods.

Im looking for a new set for long range casting and I have no idea what sets a FS Hi S vs a Greys Aircurve.

Some of the rods Im looking at:

Harrison Aviator
Free Spirit Hi S 3.5tc
Kaizen Platinums 3.5tc
Trakker propel 3.75tc
Blacky Harrison Trebuchet

Any info on what to look out for is appreciated.
