Hands down the Shimanos for me as they have a more compact look. Not a big fan of those huge spools. And also they are incredibly good for the money.
Thought about buying Techniums or Power Aeros but cant see a reason why I should do so as I dont fish months on end on big waters where I have to haul in 500m of line multiple times a day.

I won’t ever let them go, but mainly for nostalgic reasons.
They’ve never let me down, but my longer range set up including my old Bruce Ashby
3.5 T.C Chimeras, have had better days now.

They’ve had it now Baitman, so time to get the spiders out of my wallet.

Keep the XTA's

Don't just keep them, use them.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

Yes, I do like the look of the whiskers with the spare spools and being a little cheaper per reel, is a bonus.
Just thought the hagane gearing might be better on the Shimanos for retrieving heavy leads cast out at distance and perhaps the reel lasting a bit longer through general wear and tear.
Both reels would be an upgrade for me. To be honest, if the drag wasn’t so fast on the okuma Obsidians I would have really considered them as well.

I use both, both run smoothly, both have good clips, and the whisker has a longer spool and a folding handle. Both have good drag quality, but the whisker is cheaper.

I’ve got the 23 Emblem 45’s, which I believe are the next model down from the Whiskers. The line clips are absolutely fine for clipping up, I believe they are the same on both reels if that helps.

Hi all,

I’m after some user feedback please on the Daiwa Whisker 45 SCW QD OT or the Shimano Ultegra XR XTD 14000. I’ve narrowed my search down to one of these two.

I’ve used my old big pit Ultegras XTAs for well over twenty odd years now and fancy a change.
Ashamed to say I have never been an angler to fish off the clip and use wrapping sticks. But I’d like to improve my accuracy and get an accurate distance gauge I’m fishing to, something tells me my guessed 100 yard casts are probably more like 70.

So, do either of these reels have a better line clip that won’t damage the line on the cast. Plus, a better cranking power with retrieving rigs through summer weed beds would be beneficial as well.

Thank you for any help,
Regards.
Ed.
