Fluro is generally considered the most abrasion resistant, especially for sharp rocks etc. If you can use a braided mainline (to get the casting range) then maybe combine this with a few wraps of Fluro as a leader . . .

Use a tapered mainline, I use korda long chuck in 12lb to 30lb, .30-.50 for fishing at range with solid bags. I believe that the thicker end is 7m long

Thanks all for the replies. Leaders are allowed but sadly no boats.
The res has been very very low this winter which has been ideal for scouting about, it's mainly old tree stumps.
I was initially thinking of some kind of braid leader to take the stress out of any casts.

Can you do boat work? If not, I'm personally struggling with the idea of a leader being the answer to a place littered with snags, as you'll probably need a strong mainline/braid too, and that doesn't really mean big chucks, unless set up for it. Might want to also look into raising your line off the bottom using floats ala French water style, depends on how big and how far I guess, and the nature of the snags.

I've been using 80lbs splicable Kevlar leader for 3years by now.
What a dream! No large knots, abrasion resistant & sinks well.

I'd double check whether you're allowed to use shock leaders before you start tbh. I fish a large southern reservoir where you're not allowed them. If the snags on the bottom you're referring to are rocks and tree stumps, you may be advised to avoid the area all together. On my lake we're not allowed to use back leads either, no tapered lines or leaders, no leads over 3.5oz etc.

It depends what's the bigger issue Tbh, a braid leader will help you with range, but a mono leader will be better for abrasion resistance

Are you talking shock leader for casting, or last metre leader for anti tangle etc?

I've only previously used leadcore leaders when fishing on the river but I'm moving on to a big res littered with snags. I'm after some advice on a leader material for ‘big chucks' and abrasion resistance.
Braid or mono?
Any advice appreciated
