We've just returned from a tricky week on the island swim. The water quality was horrendous. Full bore algae bloom, could only see 6" down at very best and a lot of the floating kind too.

The weather was 30 degrees, bright, no wind, high pressure for the start of the week. Much better weather, stronger wind, lower temps and rain came in for the latter part.

I dropped quite a few earlier in the week, fishing to the far margins. Due to unseen snags, structures and god knows what else. In a couple of areas (midway from bank and far margin) the propeller bottomed out on something too although it being 11 foot in places. The fish are well aware of all of these and use them to their advantage, I'll definitely take braid when we go next time. The furthest we fished was 160 yards.

As mentioned, there's two showers and two separate toilets, clean enough. The communal area has everything you need. Two large chest freezers, two fridges, sink (but no tap, I filled from the shower), BBQ, charging points with UK extension leads. The small tackle shop has most things Korda, 3 barrows if you need to borrow them. No Wifi that I'm aware of.

The swim. Clean, tidy but a little tight for two of us. One big thing to point out is the boards and access to the boat. There is quite a drop off the front of the boards into the boat (at least 5 foot). It didn't cause us a problem but something to definitely keep in mind. An older gentleman on the lake complained that he struggled with just getting in and out of the boat. This is the same for all the pegs from what I could see. Two nets, two slings and a large flat mat are provided. One of our slings and a net were chewed to bits which wasn't very good but the bailiff James sorted that as soon as we mentioned it. Couldn't fault James at all, a nice fella.

The drive from Calais was an absolutely doddle taking just over an hour. Within 15 minutes there's French supermarkets, Aldi, Lidl, a vets (we used for my mates dog), shopping centre. Absolutely everything you'll need.

We were really unlucky with weights, 31 being the biggest, but that's fishing. We had a superb week, very enjoyable indeed and we're looking to head back next year. We will be looking at the October full moon as to try and void the hot temperatures we had. Probably the dead tree swim too.

OK thanks, think to add roaming on my phone is £35 for the week,so didn't really want to do that if they had WiFi in the cabin :0/

Fished it may. A couple of big chest freezers in main lodge. Nothing around clover so you just drive around. Lodge has shower block and a small onsite tackle shop. Matthias the bailiff is great and will sort you out, I fished a few days either side of the week I was there on the public canals and he gave me a few new spots to try next time im over. Can't remember WiFi but I have free roaming on Ee and signal was great.

Fished dead tree swim solo earlier in the year. Fished braid with a fluro leader. Ended up bumping a few fish so changed to a mono leader for more stretch and forgiveness. Depending on what swim 200 yards should be fine. 35 wraps was the furthest I needed to fish to swim boundaries. But had 7 takes in a hole in the weed at 17.5 wraps.

One thing in particular I'd like to know is what distances people are fishing to,its a bit hard to tell from the videos,, as I don't want to be loading my reels up with 200yrds of braid to arrive and find out people are fishing 300
Also what the shop and fridge freezers are like in regards to keeping bait and food and how local are any shops.
You'd think they would give you some idea on the website as most lakes will give you some idea .
Thanks.
Enjoy your trip

I'm going with a mate early September, can report back when we return if that'll help. We're booked onto the island swim.
