In reply to Post #11 Yep, normal van mine, not high roof etc

In reply to Post #10 By full height I mean full camper standing height fixed roof and not pop top.

In reply to Post #9 Apparently, DVLA will only change the classification to a camper van if it has got a fixed full height roof and camper decals (for some reason?)
Standard transit so should be OK then 👍
And as for the last bit, this sums up the DVLA to a tee, ffs

In reply to Post #8 I have been through the experience as I've got a converted VW Transporter. Even though mine's a full conversion with pop top kitchen etc. the best you'll get from DVLA is 'van with windows'. The initial application is made on your log book followed up by e-mail requests of evidence including extensive photographs. Apparently, DVLA will only change the classification to a camper van if it has got a fixed full height roof and camper decals (for some reason?). As mentioned, there are numerous posts on FB, the information generally backed up what happened in my case.

In reply to Post #7 Would have though some of the groups that are no doubt on Facebook would give good advise on the subject and have members with real life experience of exactly what needs to be mentioned or not.

Good advice, thank you both.
I will try the GO Compare site and see if I can add modifications and check the cost.
Might just phone the DVLA too and see what they have to say.

In reply to Post #1 DVLA will not register it as a motorhome, the best you'll get is 'van with windows'. Obviously you'll need to tell your insurance about any modifications, there are specialist insurers for converted vans.

In reply to Post #4 Meanwhile set aside yourself an hour and go to a comparison site and try inputting various quotes using modified/unmodified/motorhome.
When I get my own quotes I use a laptop/pc, too much faff on a phone
If you don't want to divulge too many personal details then there's a number of ways of getting around that.

Some good points
I will have a think about it. I don't want my arse spanking for a stupid amount like they do!!!
Hoping someone who owns similar can feedback

Whether it is now a motorhome I don't know. But when you insure a vehicle one of the questions is has the vehicle been modified?
You should really tell the truth and say yes and see where that leads.

might be best to tell them as if you do have gas appliances and one goes up they may not pay out.
You know insurance companies will try to wriggle out of paying lol

So I bit the bullet, bought a transit custom and have converted it into a camper, it’s been a fair old road
I have insured it as a van but have obviously pumped a bit more money into it. I was speaking to a lad the other day and said I might need to re-register it as a motorhome.
Has anybody been down this route, is this a fact and how much percentage wise did the insurance go up. I paid around 5k for the interior, should I just leave it s a van?
