We went to a lake for the first time and I had spoken to the owners prior to going about crays and chats. They said Crays were only a small problem some times. We couldn't keep a bait in the water for 10mins before it was gone. Fortunately, I had a tin of tigers left over from another trip and although they were banned the bailiff let us use them. I split the tin between the four of us as I said we might as well go home if we can't use them as hookers. The 'facilities' were a bare shed, no shower or toilet, no cooking facilities. Needless to say we never went back!

Like the OP, I've been going to France for around 30 yrs and after one particular experience, regardless of what the lake owner says about his lake and it's contents, and whatever the rules are, I always take a selection of artificial baits, Fox Arma Mesh and Korda Super Wrap. It doesn't take up much space in your bag and it's your insurance policy.

We went to a lake one year and the poisson chat were murder. After a few days the lake owner came down and we basically said "thanks for telling us about the poisson chat". His reply was that we should use nuts as a hookbait. "Would they be the nuts that your rules say are banned?" Never again.

I have put them back! Just can’t bring myself to do it - and even if I could, would it make any difference at all to cull a few individuals? I genuinely don’t know.

The Lake owner wanted me to throw them in the woods for the critters to eat ❗. I thought it was more humane to dispatch them quicker.

I suppose you'd return them into the Lake ❓

Agreed. Also bored of fishery owners telling me to discard the nuisance species like bream, catfish etc. Manage your own stock! Yeah, I don’t want to catch them, but I’m not paying to fish your water to cull your unwanted species for you.

I understand the frustration of catching the bloody things, but stamping on them is not really going to promote angling in general. Do the fishery owners not have a system to move them on in a more "humane" manner. It's reminiscent of seeing matchmen on the Thames chucking pope up the bank because they couldn't weigh them in.

Nothing about a certain lake but been going france for 26yrs but the last 2 yrs seems to be massive influx of crays and potion chat every lake seems to be having issues with them becoming out of control maybe its me but just an observation
