Sadly their was never was a driver shortage it’s always been the way they want experience but how do you get experience if no one will give you a chance . i found the same back in 2006 when i got my licence same struggle then .They say it’s down to their insurance companies insisting 2 years experience. Do you have an Hovis depot bread company near you they take on new drivers or try haulage companies that operate in a pallet network they normal take new driver on as they always struggle to keep drivers

I know and it's a micky take when you pay the best part of 2K for it, but it is understandable from a ins pov. There was a so called shortage of 40000 drivers when I did mine. From what I've been reading lots of newly qualified and younger working drivers are leaving as the reality of a life driving bites. There's also a lot of talk about rising minimum wage meaning drivers aren't being paid that well in comparison and the so called glut of new drivers forcing wages down (though as said many are now leaving).

Brakes are always recruiting but as far as I'm aware it's mostly class 2 in deliveries though they must have main hubs serviced by class 1 you'd think!

Airport catering was another always recruiting here as we're Hermes/Evri, but I guess it depends on location.

Tried everyone and everybody local, even the agency wants 6 months experience. Its a complete catch 22 situation. Cannot get a job without any experience and cannot get experience without a job. I thought there was a driver shortage and firms were crying out for drivers. I'm starting to think there was never a shortage.

Agency is your answer, not the best but that's the way it is. I was with Driver Hire for a while before being approached by the company I was agency for.

If you havent already, It's also worth tapping up your local independents. IME they're looking for loyalty so if they think you're not going to hang around you won't get a look in.

Might be worth asking the likes of Stobart too, if you're o.k it'll save them time and money.

You have to expect to be crapped on by agency too, or the companies they contract for, ie, I took a load down to Essex from Mcr, it was a drop off and drive back. I dropped off then they told me they had nothing left for me to take back, the one I drove down was required there that day.
After a lot of messing about they gave me the keys to a class 2, engine management light on, digital tacho not working (not a problem as I had paper t's on me).

Another time they had me waiting 3 hours to get off, the new lad gets loaded last!

Can drivers on here advise a newly qualified hgv driver how to get a start. I've tried everything but they wont touch me. They want minimum of 6months to 2 years experience before they will even consider you. How the hell are you supposed to get experience if nobody will give you a job. Even the agencies won't give me work lol.
