The latest Korda podcast Damien Clarke discusses the D rig in detail after using it during filming for Underwater. Well worth a listen as they compare the D rig vs the German as well

That's extremely interesting as I have always found the same. Tbh i don't really use either much but I always found that a iqd rig was better with size 4 & 2 hooks. I assumed it was because of the shank length and giving it more movement.

Having used both for quite a while I have come to the conclusion that the bead on the hook
(German rig) is fantastic with smaller hookbaits . The d rig has the advantage when using bigger hookbaits

However I have a friend who is far better angler than me who assures me the d rig is far superior in every aspect. He says the German rig is a lazy man’s d rig

Just to clarify , I’m talking about the IQ d rig

I've come to the conclusion that a hook ring swivel on a d offers no real advantage over one on the shank.. slight bit more bait and hook separation maybe. But that can be over come by push a small bit of s shrink tubing over the hook ring swivel so you can't pull it into the bait any further than the top eye. Less phaff as well..

More bait separation with a d rig, especially if you're using a big bait, or a big bait in relation to a smallish hook. I suppose it's a question of balance. See if it looks right when you tie one up with a bait on and try the same bait on both types of set up.

Not without the D part
But,
you could push the line back through the hook bead to create the D blob it to stop it pulling back through and then form a knotless knot to lock it in.
The bead could potentially move to create a multi rig in effect and you could see if you have been done like a piece of silicone
But it will not reset if that’s the kind of rig you want to use unless you glued the bead in place

Would you say a hook bead on the hook, placed opposite the barb then a micro ring swivel on the hook, acts more or less the same as a IQ D rig, whether tied with coated braid or a stiff mono
