I agree that practicing with your kayak is super important before you start fishing from it. Learning how to steer and self-rescue will make things much easier and safer. Anchoring is key too—without it, you’ll be paddling a lot more than fishing!

When it comes to target fish, bass is a great choice, especially in clear water. I’ve found that a mix of lures and bait works best depending on the situation. I also got some useful info on fishing techniques and types of fish from these articles. They helped me learn more about species like thornback ray and smooth hound, which I didn’t know much about before.

Yep get out and learn with your kayak. Practice self rescue and how to steer it. Before you fish from it you need to get an anchor trolly and practice anchoring otherwise you will be doing a lot of paddling and getting knackered.
I am on the north Kent coast but would guess your target species would be bass on lures in clear water, on bait the rest of the time, bass, thornback ray, smooth hound, mullet, whiting, pouting and dabs. I don’t know about mackerel as we don’t see much of them over this side inshore from year to year.
Tackle wise rods of 7 or 8ft long 15 to 50g lure rod and a 6 to 12lb bottom rod should cover most of what you need to start with braid is your friend in the sea as it has much less drag, 30lb Chinese dynema on eBay a good starting place.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

The Kayak is a Cambridge Zander that comes with the fishing rod holders.
It’s a sit on top and fairly stable - I’m just learning the minute and have gone out to sea a few times. All good on the safety front (based on Youtube vids with PFF etc. ) and will practice with little trips for the foreseeable before I go near a fishing rod.

As for catching - anything easy to get a bend in the rod to start with.
Was thinking about Mackeral and feathers to start with and then move up from there as the experience grows.

Next stop is a local fishing tackle shop but as always get a few tips on here thought it worth an ask.

What kayak do you have and what would you like to catch ? I am not sure of the tide flow around there but it’s worth working it out as I should imagine there is a fair bit of water coming out of the black water on the ebb. Look up all aspects of kayak safety… self rescue, clothing, communication etc. It’s a great way to fish inshore when the weather is good.
There is an old forum called anglers afloat. It’s not busy now but has a mass of information archived. That’s worth a look.

Mullet would be an interesting one.

They are inshore fish and that area holds loads. Either in marinas or around moored boats.

You could float fish for them with bread - lots of relevant stuff on the internet.

That part of the coast also produces a few bass, smooth hounds, skate (thornback ray) and massive stingrays. The latter get caught inshore too ! Could be fun in a kayak…..

Hi All,

Recently started Kayaking on the coast in Essex, mainly around Mersea Island.
Absolutely love it and would love to,combine fishing with it.

Have started watching vids on YouTube but there is allot to digest!

Has anyone got any tips on what’s out there? Best times to go etc?
What tactics for a beginner to start on?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
MH.
