My first advice would be to possibly up your game to a 55lb thrust motor, even in a small 1.9 rib especially if you intend to fish the larger public waters of say 50 acres plus as a 30lb thrust in a good head wind or crosswind your going to struggle maintaining a straight line coming back in if your dropping rigs, feature finding or having to motor out to land a hook-up etc...I've said it before I've been out in solid boats and ribs where even a 55lb thrust motor feels like in a good wind your getting nowhere fast and your up to full throttle and feels like you need another gear which is obviously draining your battery even quicker, my opinion is better to have to much and be over gunned rather than under money well spent in my opinion and if funds allow a spare outboard is a good investment even if it's a back up Bison engine if your intent on a Minn Kota as your primary motor as I wouldn't want to be buying two MK motors at the money they cost, then if anything happens to your motor and it cannot be fixed bankside at least it doesn't put you out the game so to speak, whilst I did when first starting boat fishing and still can doing it all on the oars is not a lot of fun.

Regarding Battery tips and chargers, any lead acid should not be run down completely flat as it does them no favours at all, ideally I'd go no lower than 20% of the battery power remaining and then recharge to maintain the battery at it's optimum also if you deplete a battery do not let it sit uncharged for too long as the battery will keep dropping the charge to a point it's difficult to get them back to an optimum, get it straight back on charge as soon as you get home dont leave it for a few weeks before remembering to do so.
For a 100/110aH battery you need a 10 Amp charger minimum but to avoid overcharging the battery keep the charger Amp's within 30% of the capacity of the battery a charger with a slow maintenance charging facility is a good purchase for lead acid they dont in my experience like a fast charge, also make sure if you do not maintain the battery on a trickle charger to give them a top-up regularly as left sitting weeks/months on end without it they will drain down quite quickly to the point you'll denature the battery and struggle to fully charge them again.

I’ve got a deep cycle marine 12v battery that I use when I go to France it’s heavy but if it’s in the boat all the time who cares

As for a charger I’ve got a 12v digital one not a all singing and dancing one but just big standard and it works fine for me.

Hi all

I’ve picked up a cheapish 1.9m RIB with the plan to do some public lake fishing in France next year. Boat will be for baiting and dropping rigs in the main, rather then carting gear about.

Looking at a minn kota 30lb motor and a couple of leisure batteries.

I know next to f*ck all about batteries. These are standard leisure batteries not Li-ion. I’ve read you have to be careful how you charge them, how long you run them, maintain them etc. is there anyone who can give me an idiots guide on do’s and don’t please? Also need to know what charger to buy if anyone has any advice.
