Really sorry to read that Adam, I know how that feels.
I tend to fish by myself for the exact same reasons. Bit of a irony, I met the chap I fished a lot with when I was around 25, he was 50ish iirc. We were very much like each other fishing wise, but he wouldn't have known that. The only reason we got to know each other was because he turned up at last knockings and I was in the swim he wanted to fish (I didn't know that until later), he asked to fish next to me (very nice of him...and suspicious). I was only doing a quick few hours before dark but I thought to myself he must be onto something so I stayed on (we both blanked) .
I guess the way we conducted ourselves that night spoke volumes, that was the start of a 25 year friendship I'm not religious but I hope there's a big pond he's on somewhere.

I always used to fish alone and enjoyed it. However over the last few years I have started to f8sh primarily with my cousin and am enjoying it a lot more. It makes blanks more interesting as there is a social aspect but it's also nice to share special catch moments with someone

I don’t like other people so go on my own. Happy to chat to most but don’t want to go fishing with anybody else.

When the weather’s nice I take my dog, I like him.

When I started Carp fishing in the 60s not to many people were carping then and being a shift worker my days off were in the week mostly on my own and got used to it
and its funny I was never worried about solo fishing and the more I did it the more I enjoyed it back then I could fish this big Colne valley lake for a week and not see a single person I loved it and of course all my midweek 48 hours you never saw anyone
and as years moved on I fished with a pal when he was able to come and then done tons of French trips most on my own
and I 100% fish much better on my own and catch more fish

same when I got brassed off the way Carp fishing was going and bought a boat I had moored in Brighton marina I used to bugger off mid channel wreck fishing on my own as my mates were all at work during the week it never bothered me in the slightest Loved it

Some interesting replies.
I thought a lot more fished in pairs with their mates to be honest, quite surprised how many go solo.

Definitely going to do this year on my tod and definitely not drinking any beers.

My mate died 5 years ago and my other long term mate died a week ago,he was one of the first proper Cornish carpers .

Generally I fish on my own and actively avoid others as much as possible ,..I can't seem to gravitate to the new generation of angler, probably to my detriment, but it is what it is .

Thing is,I found I really enjoy solitude now..🤷‍♂️

Fished with mates in my school years and was some of the best times ever .... but as we all got into our 20s we all gave up fishing.

I returned to angling in my 30s and when i tried to re-connect with the carp angling world I just i found I had little in common with this new breed of angler/angling and probably why I have kept to fishing on my own for last 20+ years..... In some ways its a shame as used to enjoy likeminded company at times.

I did belong to a syndicate for a while that had some lovely members with who i enjoyed their company .... but we all done our own thing fishing wise. Nowadays im not sure I would enjoy the "commitment" of fishing with someone else.

Fish almost every other week with my best mate, he does 2 nights and I do 3, we also do 2 French trips a year. Bivvy up in swims next to each other if we can, probably catch a few more if we didn't but for us catching is a bonus. We are both nearer 60 than 50 and It's more about the social side not that we spend all day in each others swim. Each to their own.

With someone but don't normally talk to them but on hand for photo or double take is always handy, I do get a guilt trip though if I'm catching and he's not

With a mate. For me, fishing is not just about getting out and catching! It’s about catching up with a friend that that otherwise I wouldn’t see often due to a busy work life…
