I emailed a query and this is the reply I got a week or two ago (see below).
I would take some of the 'facts' in this email with a pinch of salt (e.g. apparently the lake is NOT government run, a club runs it)

Hi Karl,

Thanks for your enquiry on lake Zajarki.

The lake lost around 400 fish from it's 7.5k stock and has been closed for the last ten weeks as it is Government run and has had the inspectors there implementing new virus protection items for all swims and anglers along with checking the fish and making sure it is good to re open on the 19th August to club members then on 1st September for our clients onwards.

The fish officially registered by the inspector was a mix of female fish between the weights of 12k and 20k and a handful of fish mid 20k weights and non of the A team stock contrary to wide fetched rumours of it has lost all its big fish from mis informed keyboard warriors that had circulated.

Our guides are fishing for ten days from the 19th and we will reporting on fish captures as they happen as normal and clients through September and October as normal on our social media.

So all is healthy and the fish are all in good health and we hope the remaining large stock have now become immune from the virus and stocks all across Croatia and Slovenia as it has not just been at Zajarki.

If you would like to book some dates I think we have one double swim available left currently in November and we can send over dates if happy to proceed.

We will need full passport copies of each angler, full addresses and telephone numbers and we can then send out a deposit invoice of 30% and the remaining amount is due then ten weeks before departure.

Kind regards,

Carp Circle Ltd

If you are thinking of coming to Zajarki anytime soon, I have bad news for you. At the end of june there was an outbreak of KHV (Koi Herpes Virus) on Zajarki, the lake has been officially closed since 9.7.:

zajarki

For those who are not familiar with KHV: it has mortality rates of up to 90 to 100%, and surviving fish will still carry the virus, which means that you will be able to spread the virus if you do not properly disinfect and/or dry your tackle in the sun.

In spite of this fact, a well known fishing trip organizer continued to encourage mates of mine not to cancel their long planned trips and told them that the lake would be open just in time for their arrival - when it was clear to all the locals here that the lake will be closed for a while, and that very likely the remaining fish stock will not be the same as before. When they finally had to cancel their trip and posted about it on Facebook, they were kindly asked to take down the post. The show must go on! The same fishing trip organizer is still offering Zajarki on his homepage, and nowhere are KHV or the 100s of dead fish being mentioned!

Until your posting, I had never heard of it, but seems to contain some seriously big fish. Only watched 1 of Mark Winstones videos so far, 1 of my friends (a globetrotter) knew about it but the price to fish there is very expensive so he hasn't bothered (so far). Wish I was younger and I might be tempted to go there, but not now.

I think they had massive flooding issues, but a few I know have been there recently have still done well.

I'd heard they had had issues with fish going belly up this year at Ontario from a couple of my very good Dutch mates who had fished it, don't know how true or extensive it was.

I was told by the bloke that runs carp escapes that it is very peggy, 4 decent swims and the rest difficult to catch from. You will see all of the video centre around those pegs fishing to the islands.

I would definitely do your research to check if any pegs are prebooked as it's a long way to go to find it busy.

There are however back up options like Ontario you could fish.
