Sam went back after work this afternoon, same swim as they were obviously about. Within minutes of casting out, he’s had a mid 40. Well done Sam 🥳

Mark many thanks for this - looking forward to giving this a go on me 'ol faithful homemade mix of 20 + years!

quick question regarding the below..

re* Because we are using egg, and no water in our dough, things happen slightly differently*

i do NOT use eggs in my mix - instead i use 1/2 oz egg albumin in my mix + water, can this 'fermenting' been done with that OR ....would i need to change over to just using eggs?

TIA

Nicely written Mark.
As per article, Your Quality results take time. You cannot rush mother nature doing what it does best.

That will get people thinking, and rolling home bait

Fermenting your freezer baits at home.

What I am going to share with you today, is such a simple thing to do when making your own freezer bait at home. You do not need to buy any expensive additives, you do not need to change your favourite boilie recipe. With just one extra ingredient, time, you are going to immeasurably improve the bait that you make. In the photograph, there are two S2 crushed cork pop ups, side by side. One, is slightly darker than the other. The darker one, also smells slightly different to the human nose. Despite being made with identical ingredients, identical base mix and liquids, all from exactly the same batch... One of them, is slightly darker than the other. The darker hook bait itself, has an almost olive smelling twang to it. If you tasted the two pastes before they were rolled, the darker one has a much richer and more intense taste to it. But they were made with identical ingredients. The darker one, is in fact, far more effective... It will actually catch you more carp, than the lighter one will. The lighter one, has been made just for the purposes of what I am writing now. Just to show you a visible difference, which you can see with your own eyes. The lighter, less effective coloured one has been made, in exactly the same way in which you have always been told to roll your boilies, since you first took up carp fishing. In exactly the same way as freezer baits are made everywhere that carp fishing is practiced. Eggs in a bowl, add your liquid additives, add your powders form into a paste, put into a bag for ten minutes and roll. Standard procedure.

The darker, more effective one has been made in a slightly different way. The paste itself, was cold fermented, before it was even rolled into round balls and cooked. In a similar way to how the fermented base is made on a more expensive pizza, by fermenting the dough first. This produces a far richer tasting base to the pizza itself. You can do a very similar thing with your boilies, and it has a massive effect on the effectiveness of the bait itself. The darker, more effective hook bait in the photograph, is made in exactly the same way, that every single hook bait made by Specialized Hook Baits has ever been made over the last decade. Our hook baits are made of 100% food and natural cork. The food content, gets fermented before it is even rolled and cooked. The darker more effective hook bait, was made in a slightly different way. The eggs were put into the bowl, but NO chemical additives whatsoever were added, these are actually preservatives in the main and will only inhibit the fermenting of the food we want to commence. Just the eggs. The base mix is added and the dough is formed. Exactly the same base mix, but with no liquid additives. Just eggs. Now the paste has been made, wrap it tightly into a plastic bag and twist as normal. Now this needs to be placed into the fridge for twelve hours. After twelve hours, take the paste out of the fridge, turn it up the opposite way and put it into your microwave for a further twelve hours over night at room temp. The first time you ever do this, you can do your own experiment to observe the difference in the two pastes yourself. Make half of your paste the way you normally do, make half of it 24 hours before, following the instructions I just gave you. When you put the two pastes side by side, there will be big differences. The fermenting one, the food content itself will smell stronger, and slightly different. It will be darker. As you roll it, you will smell a big difference with your nose. All of the lovely food content of your base mix has started to react. This is super attractive to a carp. Cooking, and later freezing, will stop this reaction and lock it in.... But once you put the finished baits underwater and the egg content starts to break, the process will resume. You gave your bait a big kick start from mother nature so to speak, before you even rolled it. If you want to add your liquid attractors, do so now. Once your bait is rolled and dried, place it into a bucket. Measure out your liquid additives. Mix them with a touch of water from the kettle, and pour them over your boilies. As soon as they have sucked it up, put them in the freezer as normal. The additives which you added, are now no longer locked in by the eggs as they usually are. You have added them into the bait in a more free form. They will flood out from the bait like a bomb going off. You have improved the attraction massively. The food content of your bait is now actually giving off different signals under water to the carp too. It's not just giving off a food signal like the angler in the swim next doors freezer baits are... Now, your freezer baits are also giving off a 'food which is breaking down' signal to the fish. This is incredibly attractive to a carp. Natures form of attraction. It's slightly different to a strawberry, or a squid and octopus chemical signal. There are better ways to attract a carp to your food baits, which they are going consume in quantities. The taste of the food through the water, is far more important to the fish than the chemical smell. By fermenting the paste, you are enhancing and increasing the taste of the food naturally. Not with man made chemicals.

If your bait contains active yeasts, you will need to reduce the fermenting times. Because we are using egg, and no water in our dough, things happen slightly differently. The reaction is slightly slower and can be controlled better. If your bait contains lots of things that are high in simple carbs, starches and sugars, all the better.

As promised, I have written something out to help you lot who roll your bait at home. I have not done anything like this for more than ten years now. I had a bad experience with things I wrote on the internet to help carp anglers many years ago. Things being reproduced by others in magazines and at carp shows. So I stopped any of that caper for more than ten years and just concentrated on work and carp drugs. I have constantly been asked over the years to write articles about bait. More recently appear on podcasts about bait etc. Just this last week, a prominent long time magazine editor has been messaging me again, as he has done so many times over the years. (Don't take it personal, you were one of my heroes growing up). I know he will be reading this. Apart from one Carpworld I done with my arm up my back, and SubSurface Vol 1 when SHB very first started (neither were about bait), I have always shied away from this stuff.

As a friend recently commented to me, things are very different now. What I post on a forum, I can go post to 250k carp anglers on faceache as well... So it's far easier for anyone who reproduces this stuff for their own financial gains, to be called out by the masses now.

Carp fishing has given me everything I have pretty much, it's good to give a bit back sometimes.

I have no doubts that the very simple procedure I am about to share with you, will also be incorporated into many commercial bait firms over night. There will be many who will proclaim... "We've been doing that for years". That's life.

This procedure is so simple, but it will immeasurably change the effectiveness of your home rolled bait. I will post it on this thread later.

No sorry Matt not in the immediate future at the moment. April is when things start getting really busy for us for the Spring.

I would loved to have released them last Summer. But that would put us into a position, where it is hard for us to keep up with demand. For the past 18 months we have been completely on top of our waiting list. Even at the very busiest times of the year, no one waits more than 10-14 days. 95% of our orders go out in under 7 days. We want to keep it that way too.

It never used to be that way. Before I was a member of this forum... We used to often have very long waiting times in the Spring/Summer. 2-3 months when we first released the GPB1.

We released the GPB2 in late 2021, but it was 2022 that it really took off. Last Summer, we were selling a large amount of GPB2 all year. Then we started supplying two of the biggest tackle shops in the country before Xmas as well. It's that, which has stopped us from releasing the Cheese yet. They will come as soon as we are in a position to release them, don't worry. I know from previous experience, exactly how much stock we now require, to release a new hook bait. It's a lot.

I keep getting messages on the work phone asking for them. I think that some anglers think that maybe some sneaky tubs are being sent out.... But that is not true, no customers at all have them. I should never have mentioned them. I have only ever mentioned them on this forum.
