Eh up ru! Yeah defo a toughy but always half expect that on venues where your fishing for the quality n size that abbey offer but hey oh that's fishin I guess!
Hasn't suprised me at all that the fish have spread out, they got hammered in there that week we fished.started showing a bit in front of 15-17 a day before we left but couldn't really get a rig to em from 16.
Be kingfisher f me again next time I think, lovely water with still some unknown whackers in there I think.
Tight lines for rest of season to everyone that's on there this year....

Hi Andy,

It was a toughy, eh! Since then the fish have spread all over Heron! The 'Crazy Hats' week has been well documented on FB, as was the week before (1 after you!).... 16 has fished really well over the past 2 weeks but ALL the fish have come from 2 spots less than 10ft from the bank (seriously!!)
I can't remember the last time the fish fed this hard on the run into spawning, the guys in 11-12 wound up on 67 fish between them, the following week saw a 35 fish haul from the opposite end of the Lake too?? Hasn't just been the multiple captures that are unusual either, the amount of recaptures is amazing, with Single Scale, Gums, The Grey Lady, The Unknown and Shoulders all slipping up on more than one occasion.. The Unknown is usually a once a year fish but it slipped up twice in 3 days last week, Gums was last out in November 2011 and that's now been on the bank 3 times in the past fortnight!!
Judging by conditions (the amount of early season sunshine, water temps, fish chasing each other, etc..) it looks like they'll spawn quite soon, possible mid May, which'll ease any worries I have after a very late spawning (end of July) left us with a couple of casualties last season!

Fox has continued in much the same vein, with fish coming out all over the Lake! It produced a couple of big hits, back to back, in the past fortnight, with Steve Shaw taking 30 fish and then Matt Miller having 28! This week's already got one chap on 21 fish, Humpy has had a couple of visits to the bank, both times over 70lb, the latter being at a new Lake record of 70lb 14oz!

Kingfisher is truckin' along nicely, the average weight in there is far higher than previously thought and even though there are a fair few upper 20's landed each week, their numbers are easily outweighed by the number of 40lb+ Carp!

Attila was a bit of a slow starter this season but it's now up to full speed, Danny Champion is flying from Peg ?
and is up to 19 fish (I think), with 8x 40's amongst them!!

Wildboar isn't to be sniffed at, it's producing huge numbers of fish, in amongst them, a couple of stand out catches.. A double take in the first week of April, saw a 42+ and a 46 Mirror landed.. A couple of Dutch regulars had 3 40lb+ fish on the bounce (including a gorgeous slate grey Mirror of 45.12) and last Friday night, we had a 45+ fully scaled on the bank!!

For more (regular) updates, feel free to look at the NEW Abbey FB page (with 'likes' not friends) as that's easier to keep topped up with pics, etc..

Regards,

Ru

Is spodding a real no no on Fox? I use a boat but my mate I'm coming with refuses to, says it's cheating. He will spod. Don't really want to fish away from me partner but if it means catching or not I will. I got 2 boats but he still wont use one.

Not necesserally needed but can be helpful.
Echos in heavy weed can be unreliable in my experience and I always double check with marker rod just In case.
Polorised glasses and a tall tree can be a much better advantage,on heron certainly.
Spodding a bit of a no no on fox though so if your thinking about particles then a boat is the obvious answer.
I'm sure Ru will be able to offer you some good advice as to what's best to do.
Enjoy your trip.....

We'll that didn't go to plan lol!
Hardest fishing I've ever had at the venue.....never seen so many feeding fish stacked up in the corner of 11 n 12 before in 11 years of abbey trips, albeit on and off.
Fished 16 and tried EVERYTHING I possibly could to get a take to no avail.
Didn't think moving was an option due to the rest of the lake being pretty devoid of feeding fish...
Out of the 7 that fished only 3 fish caught!
Fair play to the lads in 11 though, had a trip of a lifetime including some of the named biggies...
Wasn't overjoyed at driving through the crap Friday traffic to get there early sat morning and the first anglers that day to fish heron,to find the 4 best swims(arguably)already taken ...up against it from the start and not sure what the answer is as I hate draws as much as the next person but least it'd be a level playing field from the off.....
Having said that,it's still my favourite venue in France and I'll certainly be returning to set the record straight at some point in time.......

Hi ru, we are coming down in may three of us for our first time on the abbey complex fishing fox lake, we booked up early last year but sadly one of our party was diagnosed with cancer last last year, hes being having treatment for several months and it has taken its toll on him , my question is what is fox like for more social fishing , under normal circumstances we wouldnt care if we fished together we are there to catch fish , however due to the present circumstances we feel it would be good to fish together to keep a eye on him and help when needed, I must say he is a capable angler and thought of this holiday has got him thro alot in the last months but still as friends it good to help if we can ... many thanks ru !

We've got 3 different Particle mixes available :

1. Dark Addiction - Hemp and Buckwheat with a good dose of pure Aniseed Oil thrown in

2. Dark Addiction Plus - Hemp, Buckwheat, Crushed Corn, Dari and a secret something

3. Yellow Peril - Large Yellow Maize, White Maize and a liquid Sweetener

All 3 of the above are cooked fresh and then vacuum sealed to maintain the goodness. They're bagged up in 2.5kg weights and priced at 12€50 each

Can count on one hand the number of times I've had to use a boat to land a fish from any of the lakes at Abbey.... and before you say anything, no, I'm not from Norfolk, so it's 5 or less

If your set up is correct, then it should limit the chances of a fish becoming weeded in the first place. Simple things like having a tight clutch, fishing bowstrings, using drop off leads and having the tips up will naturally draw the fish to the surface on it's initial run..

Also, simple things like fishing sensibly, i.e up to weedbeds and not in them, will help. Just because your echo sounder shows a 6" hole in the weed, while it's floor to ceiling thick for 20yds around it, doesn't mean you should drop a rig there!!

(or go home moaning that you lost the few fish you hooked.... by blaming the fishery to compensate for your stupidity and catch at all costs mentality!)

In a short space of time, I have managed to create spots at least as big as a 2 man groundsheet on 3 of the lakes here and managed to get Anglers on them during the same week, to catch fish. All you need do is find an area the fish are comfortable in/around, chuck a few handfuls of bait in and repeat over the first few days of the trip, resisting the urge to fish it until you're sure they're feeding hard.. You'd probably do it on your water back home, so why not here? I tell everyone to expect a fish a day from Fox or Heron, so if you've got to sit it out and bag a brace a day during the second half of your stay and still reach the required 'target' then surely it's worth it, no? You can clear a surprisingly large area by doing this and normally overnight too. Granted, the approach isn't suitable in every swim but they've all got margins, be it far or near and at least 50% of my captures come from within 10ft of the bank!

I'm out for 5 nights on Heron mid August. Sounds like I'm going to need a boat with all the weed reported that time of year!

Pity you can't get there earlier mate,12 can be a cracking swim when conditions are right so might not be available by Monday but it's sometimes better to let fate decide....least you'll have a good excuse if things don't go to plan....

Cheers Andy
