In reply to Post #57 But, the carp may be able to.
I'm a novice when it comes to bait science. However I do know it's all about availability of receptors , and keys to fit in them. There is no point in overloading a bait with the same key. It's about having enough different keys to unlock the available receptors. Any more is a waste of money. Many good baits do not have lots of different ingredients. The correct balance is more important. There is no point adding a new " wonder " ingredient to a bait if it's ingredients are filling the same receptors as existing cheaper ingredients.
It's a bit like someone who is eating a well balanced diet of well prepared natural ingredients, then taking a load of vitamin pills. All you are going to achieve is a lot of expensive piss. The opposite end of the spectrum is if the fish are deficient in any particular vitamin or mineral, and you can provide it at the right time. Then you can fill your boots. Chances of doing that deliberately, rather than by pure chance. Might be better off at the roulette table in monte.

In reply to Post #50 It could well EU meddling there are approximately 1100 ingredients which can be used for animal feed flavours while there are over 2000 which can can be used in human use flavours.
So there are over 900 ingredients which can't be used in animal feeds as the result animal may harm humans when eaten ! typical rational of the EU.

In reply to Post #47 Personally I can only think of something like the typical EU meddling with regulations in the key ingredients that the flavourist type manufacturers used to be able to use, now cannot.

In reply to Post #46 Why would it not be the same Sam? I'm sure Mistral would be sourcing it from the same supplier who bought out Campbells?
