I've seen plenty of fish caught dropping next to the H-block. These were cute, pressured fish so I don't think the marker spooks them.
If anything I think something more substantial in the water, like a pole or a pipe draws them
In to have a look.
As for holding the rod a certain way coming back in, just do what feels comfortable. If something snags on the way in I just redo the rod. I use baits that I know are good for a couple of days once out, so not worth the second thought that it might have shifted. The great thing about using a boat is that if the water clarity is ok you can go back and check.

I've been boating baits out on big lakes for 25+ years now.
1, I never leave H blocks out. I've seen others have some right 'mares when hooked fish have gone round theirs!
2, I always point the rod at the lead and just pinch the line coming off the spool between my fingers, under minimal pressure, just to keep the line reasonably tight and straight. You'd be amazed how much bow you can get when returning to shore in a cross wind! I've never bothered sinking the tip though as it's not easy to do in a 13ft Orkney Spinner. I have the rod butt resting on the central seat you would sit on if you were rowing and round about the spigot just about rests on the transom, next to the outboard.

Cheers guv, I have been using a boat for at least the last 12 years, and apart from last year when me and the butcher fell overboard, it's all been plain sailing, so to speak  . I was just trying to get a few people's takes on it. This will be the first time in about 20 years that I will be doing it on my own, as the butcher is no longer going to France due to his ill health. I am taking the Mrs for the first time, just for some company, but she has categorically said that she is not getting in a boat with me

I think spooking might be water specific.
I have used the Atrope at Etang Boux and caught. I was hoping to see it wobble if fish rubbed on it.
Another lake I fished (Taberge) I used my homemade conduit efforts and caught...and that was a lake which hadn't seen angling pressure before so having black plastic poles in there was very unnatural (were the carp curious, or didn't they care?)

Beyonce has said what I was thinking so I won't repeat 95% of it...
Instead of a cane, consider conduit. I use black and then a length of white for the top. White bits are cut to different lengths as you don't want too much sticking out the water blowing in the wind! I think OldGeezer suggested 1kg weight lifting plate as the pin down weight.
I use the weights that Tackle box sell with those Atrope markers. I have 2 of the Atrope, but the plastic is brittle compared to conduit. I do like the way the top section extends the inner coloured marker plastic though (will look for a video)
Last tuppence worth - when motoring back - be extra vigilant of a loop of line pinging off the spool and snagging on reel handle/rowlock/whatever as you'll immediately drag that well placed rig off the spot and possibly feck the hook point

Thanks, mate. Do you think they can spook off a marker or a cane?
Also, regarding the rod direction. I saw a video a while ago where Scott Lloyd dropped his rig off, then pointed his rod forward on the way back, his theory was that if you had some kind of snag up with your line or something, you had a whole 12ft of play you could swing the rod back, where as if you where pointing at the lead, it could move it off the spot, if that makes sense.

1. I don't like leaving the H blocks out. I usually chuck them out when I find something interesting then drop a home made cane marker when I find the spot. If a fish takes you round an H block it can be a nightmare. The line just passes over a cane.
2. I point the rod at the lead, tip just under the water and nice and fast back to the bank.

1. What's your view on leaving H-block markers out when you are fishing to that spot?
2. After you have dropped your rig out and are motoring back to your swim, which way do you point your rod? Also do you have your tip underwater?
