Not the same size spools but until recently I've always backed with a bulk spool of Daiwa Sensor, the last lot being 12lb but poundage isn't really that important as long as it's not stupidly big that the braid might dig into it.
Depending on braid don't top up to the rim or you'll be asking for wind knots. Maybe do 1 spool first until your happy then copy to the other spools.
I did my backing by weight, weigh empty spool, add backing until yiur happy then weight again so it's easy to repeat the process. You could do handle turns but I always lose count

In reply to Post #3 Would you suggest a similar diameter mono to that of the braid ? I could get a 1200 yard bulk spool of 0.35 mono , put 400yds on each spool then top up with 100yds of braid , would that work ? I’ve never used braid as a mainline , do you too up the spool or leave a bit like on your Spod / market rods ?

In reply to Post #1 I've used string in the past to do this. bulk the spool up with string, then wind on your chosen line.
Mono is a good bet, but Im so used to shallower spools now that I find it feels very heavy in hand when done that way.

I'm going to start fishing a venue where braid is allowed , so I'm going to load my spare spools with that and keep my original spools with mono in case I switch venues.
My spare spools are the deep ones for the Daiwa Emblem 45 reels and take 580 yds of 0.35 line.
I only want to load around 100 yards of braid so a significant difference, does anyone have any neat ideas how to reduce the line capacity on these spools .
Mono backing seems an obvious choice but for 3 spools I'm probably looking at around 400yd s of mono per reel?
