Old Buryhill.. that's a blast from the past.. Got to be one of the first commercially fisheries when most of the fisheries were on club tickets.A mate of mine as a kid in the late 80s used to go pike fishing down there.. Graham Rowles who used to run it. Used to sell goldfish as live baits. A favourite of the Zander that were in there at the time.
How he used to hook them up I don't know. Couldn't do it myself.. doubt you'd get away with it in these so called more enlightened times we are living in.
Remember the boat house and Dovecote right by the entrance. There used to be a hot drinks machine in there. Never fished from one of the punts. But before you could fish from the fair bank in the reeds. I think they formed a bit of a night syndicate which allowed you to do that. Fishing from the punt to against the reeds was a good way of targeting the Carp. Bit of a chuck back in the Day. Shame it's been lost to fishing

In reply to Post #7 The venue I got back into fishing on after uni. Loved Miltons for the crucians and tench until they ruined it by putting f1s in there. Bonds was always good for a number of carp up to mid doubles. Main lake was great fun, especially from a punt up the jungle. Shame its lost to fishing but I'll always have very fond memories of the place

I thought it sounded familiar. Surprised to hear the speci lake got bought too, from what G was saying it was always busy and it's future seemed secured. The websites still active, had a nosey, quite some investment to start but 30 years, not bad at all. I'm certain G said the main lake needed de sitlting again and it was cost prohibitive given the age of the owner, that was before down sizing was mentioned. The main lake looked lovely, I could imagine being quite happy looking at that scenery all day

Boathouse and main lake were sold as a complete sale to a private buyer. Temple (speci/carp lake) was continuing to run after this sale but as I understand it, another buyer came in wanting to turn it into a natural wildlife lake so this also sold. Not sure what happened to the 2 smaller lakes. Cut my teeth here in the 90s on the main lake and the 2 smaller ones were great for taking kids starting out.

Is that the one where the chap has the huge white dovecote in his garden near the lake, big squarish type house?
If so, it was mentioned by Graham on the Totally Awesome Fishing Show a couple of years ago that it was closing, sure he's been there a few times, had a jammy 32lber from the bits lake iirc. His last visit was last year, I think he said it would be the last time.

My dad and 2 x uncles had a lot to do with Bury Hill back in the late 60s early 70s ..
I have on film Graham Rowles ,and my family electofishing a lovely Sussex venue ,known as Strowgers lake to take Tench and big Rudd to Bury Hill..
Used to stay with family up there ,and float fish next to a huge white dove cote ,catching Tench ,bream ,rudd and so on ...lovely memories..lovely place ,also went out on the punts and hid in the piggery huts,...exciting for a kid ...!
Nothing nice seems to last ...

In reply to Post #1 Don't take this as gospel but the story is something like the guy who ran the fishing retired couldn't find anybody to pass it on too so he shut it. Apparently the costs of running it became unviable. There were also rumours the boat house has been sold so houses could be built there. I'm sure somebody will come on with the definitive version.
