In reply to Post #31 Think the same myself, there will be a day when I can’t get up there, good news is I’ve had a good bash at it over the years!
You take care Henry

In reply to Post #30 Firstly apologies for taking the thread off topic and to those who don’t want to read about hiking🤣
Hi Chris it’s a sad fact of life that getting old isn’t good on the joints, I get bad issues with my knees these days, spent a lot of years at work working under pub counters installing gear that’s taken its toll on them, I love walking up there but not sure how many years of hiking I’ve got left, I enjoy spending a day with a decent challenge in front of me but always suffer so much more coming down than going up, luckily I tend to recover fairly quickly so can usually do a hike a day when I go, anyway mate you take care, let’s keep our fingers crossed the Iran situation gets better soon or we’re all in the crap!

In reply to Post #29 Hi Henry
Still deciding if the e sim is the way forward or EE
The lakes, beautiful pal ❤️
Yes, did Scafell, and on the way down and twisted my knee, had a few problems since
High street is one of my favourites, first walk up there as a kid with my family. Last time I walked it was from the Haweswater hotel, red squirrels there, straight up though from there!
Last walk, last year with my daughter, Langdale pikes, stunning, carried the dog quite a way too
I’m due a trip, usually do Coniston at the start of every year but my circumstances have changed so not been for a couple of years. Scotland, Devon and Cornwall and and Anglesey were the main places for me last year
Take care pal and enjoy the walking

In reply to Post #28 Hello Chris, apologies for the late reply, havent been logging on as much lately and got home projects on the go
Yes absolutely correct esim is not a physical sim card, not something that i believe is that common here, i had a nightmare when i first got the phone (brought over from the States for me] but once i got it sorted its been great, i did have a small issue a year or so ago when o2 did some jigging of their signals🤷🏻♂️ but I just went into a store and they sorted it in no time at all, I’m not on the cheapest plan, £16 a month for sim only deal as the phone was bought and not on a plan, but for that I get unlimited roaming in Europe ( I go to Ireland a lot to visit relatives ) and it also includes roaming in the states, unlimited calls and I literally hardly touch the sides when it comes to data so my bills are never anymore than that.
On a different subject I’m back up to the Lakes in early May, might try Scafell again from Wasdale this time and possibly High St as when I hiked them both a few years ago the weather at the top was crap, i think you were there at the same time as me and the day I walked up High St (wet, windy and zero visibility) you went up Scafell from memory, last year when I went I had an itch to scratch ( Helvellyn ) I last hiked it in ‘84 in Doc Martens and with snow on the ridge, I wanted to see how my nerve was as I’m not a lover of heights😂, anyway it went well and had a beautiful day with a reward of a lovely pint ( or two! ) in the pub at the top of the village, I also wanted to do Blencathra ( not along sharp edge but from Threlkeld, I started late at two as I’d been to Keswick for lunch and wasn’t sure I was going to bother but again it was a beautiful day so I thought what the heck! My knees are knackered though so coming down is always painful, that’s not gonna get better anytime soon but knee supports help, I also drove through the Honister pass and walked around Buttermere ( busy but still one of the best walks in the Lakes), saw the Yank transport plane fly through twice, I think they often fly through Honister with the back door open, I’d do that again and combine it with a hike up Haystacks, I saw loads of jets but always in the distance, it’s so exhilarating when they fly through.

In reply to Post #26 Nice one Henry, and nice to hear from you, thank you 👍
I’m with EE. based on below I had a look and you can buy a bundle.
I take it an e sim is no SIM card?
Some type of SIM or a bundle might do me, I was thinking I might need a router too, hoping the signal is OK!

In reply to Post #22 Not sure if this helps Chris but im on O2 which includes roaming in Europe and ive also got free roaming in the States as i occasionally visit friends there ( not sure when ill next be going with the way things are though🙁) anyway my phone is acyptually an iPhone I bought over there and operates with an eSIM as they did away with physical SIM cards a long while ago, I think I can buy extra esims and swap between them ( not that I’ve bothered as like I say my plan includes Europe and the states and isn’t that expensive, hope that helps👍

In reply to Post #22 I noticed that, but it just goes to show how neglected Non Carp can be.
Maybe Karl can consider including Non Carp in the Read Next function.
Like minded carp anglers don't have to talk about carp all of the time.
It reminds me of being on the bank and someone comes along and talks 100% carp and bores the sh1t out of you.
If like me you want to tell them to shut the feck up for a moment but just haven't got the heart, maybe because I was like it once

In reply to Post #16 Will check it out
No seasoned travelers using anything else or a mobile router option?

In reply to Post #14 Thanks Jason,
I looked at that, the E SIM maybe a good option?

In reply to Post #7 Sorry to Scozza for going off topic
Its fine
Is the smarty a sim option for your current phone, no contract?

In reply to Post #13 '1p mobile' use the ee network and are considerably cheaper, you can use up to 14GB roaming too. Also, it's a 30 day deal so you're not tied in. I've been with them for 3 years and can't fault them.

O2 will give you 25gb a month of free data roaming. Bresse region of France it was pretty crap signal most places in all honesty. Ski resorts probably have better masts etc.

|
|

In reply to Post #1 EE before all the roaming charges changed used to do a roaming deal for £25 for a month, now that’s the price for 7 days.
You are better off getting an eSim.

In reply to Post #10 I have to admit Smarty wasn't the best but it's ok since they joined up with Vodafone
ID and Smarty both use Three so in theory the service should be the same.
I did see a chart that showed how the big 4 gave service to others. I'll see if I can find it.
EDIT found it but I think it's more to with data

Getting back on topic
No one has come up with a solution using mobile operators in the country you go to.
Maybe move it out of Non Carp?

I want to get a sim For a WiFi camera for my boat looks like it may be a good thing to get.
Kids can also use it then to hook up to their tablets when they get bored lol
When I had my personal van I used to use giff gaff for the little black box in case it ever got nicked.

In reply to Post #9 Poor signal at home was the reason I moved from smarty, think it was 3 network, supposed to be a full signal area but their customer services fessed up the mast was 'under maintainance for 18 months' so being monthly I cancelled and went to ID.
My service is good but there is a annoying delay on my phone. The mother in laws on ID too and she had some issues to the point she wanted to leave but it resolved. Irony, the Mrs has just changed to vodaphone and at home I get better signal.
I believe the main carrier can 'throttle bandwidth' of other users of its network, so I was told.
My Mrs was on smarty too and she couldn't get a signal in city centre Leeds. Final straw came on Xmas eve, she tried to call me for a lift after getting of a tram at Altrincham and couldn't get a service at all, I was not happy.
Edit, Tram, last 1 of the night after a xmas doo, standing under the lights for her own safety, hence me not being happy.

In reply to Post #8 This ID mobile deal looks good
30 days rolling plan
Data: 100GB
Minutes: Unlimited
Texts: Unlimited
30GB roaming in EU
£10 month
The good thing about the 30 days is if you are unfortunate enough to live in a poor signal area you can move again. All a bit of faff but at least you're not stuck battling it out trying to get out of a 12 or 24 month contract.
Maybe if I had climbed Everest, but I've never had a signal problem abroad, your phone should find and latch on to the best local network.

I used to use smarty, now with ID, might be worth a look for you, unless you need more data, great prices.
ID France is one of our free Roaming destinations which means that you can use your monthly data allowance and add-ons at no extra cost, up to 30GB. Make sure you connect to Societe Francaise Du Radiotelephone, Bouygues, Orange or Free Mobile as they are the roaming partners.
I believe 3 and Vodaphone are sharing networks in the U.K now so maybe either of them could be a option in France, I've not looked into it. Generally when I go with the Mrs I ensure we have 2 different networks available for coverage, now with dual sim phones you could do it with just 1 phone, and if you chose 2 cheaper options on different networks it could be less cost than 1 sim on a big name. Guess it depends on who's with who in France.

In reply to Post #5 Many providers still give free EU roaming.
I get 12GB free with Smarty which is enough for surfing, WhatsApp emails etc.
Might not be enough to watch multiple films or play video games though.
I'm not tied to a contract either I can move to another provider at any time.
Only thing to watch out for is it runs on the Three network and I've heard the signal can be patchy in certain areas.
@cam
I like the Non Carp section, it makes a nice break from what's the best line and umpteen bait boat threads.
Maybe if Non Carp was included in 'Read Next' it might encourage others to join in.
I think that function was removed because at the time the amount of football piss taking was OTT and it was understandable that it was irritating to others.
Sorry to Scozza for going off topic

Way back in time before we used to be able to roam
I went to Ireland fishing and the wife took the kids to Ibiza with her sister
Cost me a fortune in calls as I had to pay Ireland to England and then England to Ibiza
For both phones glad it was only a week ….

In reply to Post #3 As far as I know EE doesn't do free roaming.
I have a Smarty sim that I use in the UK. If go into the EU I can use 12GB of data for free.
12GB is enough for me but I don't watch loads of video and play games
If you need more than that then hopefully someone on here can help with your original question.
If you have no luck create a new thread in General Carp where everyone can see it, as it seems many people on here don't visit Non Carp

In reply to Post #1 Some UK providers allow you to use data in the EU
Is your UK sim tied into a contract?

Morning all, after some advice from the expert travelers amongst us...
So im looking at France in the campervan this year, probably take a couple of rods but mainly sight seeing, and walking, Mount Blanc area. (France or Germany way)
I have been doing a bit of reading, i usually use my iphone as a hot spot in the UK but wondering what the best option is for Europe and the cheapest
Euro SIM option
Separate mobile router, Starlink etc. TP-Link M7350 Unlocked 4G Portable Travel Wi-Fi look decent
Mainly for internet connection, whats app and the odd calls
