In reply to Post #22 Just use hazelnut oil.

In reply to Post #17 Your right the old toasted sesame does have a tendency to over power a bait..

In reply to Post #19 Walnut. Sounds nicer.

In reply to Post #18 Both mixed Groundnut = peanut

In reply to Post #17 Walnut or Groundnut? Just spotted them in Sainsburys.

In reply to Post #14 Got to admit I'd be substituting that for a nut oil. Not sure on roasted sesame though, you'd be smelling of it for a week afterwards
You won't go wrong using CC recipe, probably well tried and tested and a nice place to start.

In reply to Post #13 It's a perfectly good place to start

In reply to Post #14 'Add 10ml of Salmon oil to help rolling and flavour.'
Sesame oil seed sounds nice tho. I use that in my cooking a lot.

In reply to Post #13 Why the Salmon oil? Would it not be better with something like Hemp or roasted sesame seed oil. Definitely complement it better.

In reply to Post #11 Ok, so im probably going to try the Carp Company recipe as a test and go from there.
5 Eggs
5ml Mixed Nut EPA
5ml Peanut EPA
10ml Tiger Nut Extract
Base Mix - 500g
10ml of Salmon oil
If this turns ok i'll start modifyng but this really is just a test run to start with.

In reply to Post #4 Going to correct myself, not Geoff Kemp, Geoff Bowers of ABS iir more clearly

In reply to Post #4 Quite right most nut mixes are a mixture of 20-40% nut meals, tiger nut and peanut being the most popular. Some use peanut protein which is more soluble than just peanut meal. Then some bird seed, semo and/or soya and something soluble like a basic milk powder. A few other tweaks like whey gel or blood plasma and you have a basic nut mix.
I like the fact Target Baits nutmilk mix has added yeast. I have a very soluble yeast product in my nut mix with hydrolised Whey instead of the basic milk powder. I also use vanilla meal from CC Moore as I am convinced carp love it and have been using it for well over 15 years now.
You can make a nut mix very high in nut meals but they are not really very digestible so I feel a nut base fortified with other digestible ings is a better all-round bait. Also some nuts are very high in oil and can go rancid quite quick so keep these types low in the mix

In reply to Post #9 It's all good fun. I convinced the Mrs she needed to try all the nut butters, Almond, Brazil etc, needless to say a bit of each found it's way into a jar and was let down with some PG, it was pretty good tbh. I was trying to emulate CC Moores Roasted Nut compound which smells divine, but it's pricey, and I didn't find the AA Baits comparable, though good. I still remain convinced there's a flavour in the CCM stuff, Vanilla maybe, who knows, I just got hints of it from vanilla meal.

In reply to Post #7 Yep When I was 'playing' with nut bases I'd buy Aldis whole nuts and blend them down, also used peanut butter in the base and glug. Got to be a bit careful in the base though, can make it sticky if you use too much peanut butter.

|
|
In reply to Post #6 Stick it in a blender to fine it down a bit?
|
|
|
In reply to Post #5 I'd say so, most contain nut meal/flour as opposed to kibble. If you like the look of a nut base and it contains kibble, it's easy enough to riddle it then blend the bigger bits down but obviously that will create a 'tighter' base

|
|
In reply to Post #4 Are the majority of the nut base mixes smooth as when i have used a throwing stick with boilies that contain 'bits', they tend to spllit mid air.

In reply to Post #1 Smurf will probably be able to correct me on this, my memories fading re bait making, but at one point and still probably now a lot of nut base mixes out there were supplied or based on the same recipe, (was it Geoff Kemps?), some just pepped it up with bits and bobs.
The AA Baits base is well regarded (and very reasonable price wise) and I considered it myself before using a CC Moore recipe. If your new to making nut bases, whole nut kibble can be a pain to roll and can expand in the boil so I'd be wary of using it at 1st.
Handcraft do a nut base too, it rolled fine.

In reply to Post #2 Thanks Smurf. Just dipping my toes at the moment and trying not to get myself too confused.
I dont pay much for my current bait but just fancied a go to see what i can come up with.
I have caught using Carp Companys Nut boilie so i know its a pretty good bait.

In reply to Post #1 The term 'EPA' seems to be a Carp Company marketing spin. If you look at the suggested recipes they have they typically use 10ml/kg of the EPA so they are not a huge amount of volume to squeeze all this in. They then also add extra aminos etc in some to the recipes which further backs this up.
Not saying they don't work, never used them, but wanting an EPA you are probably restricted to one manufacture. Cast you net wider and just add the hydros etc that you want anyway.
Other flavour suppliers I would look at, in no particular order, are;
Optibaits
Catchit labs
Nutrabaits
John Baker
As for a nut base mix I have only ever made my own. If I wanted to buy a ready made basemix though I would start off looking at AA Baits or Target baits, both seem reasonable on paper.

Looking at having a dabble at making my own baits but was wondering where I would be able to buy EPA flavourings, specifally mixed nut and Peanut?
Was looking at the Carp Company Nut base mix as well, unless anyone knows of an alternative?
