Let it drop as normal, count down by trial and error until it hits bottom.
This way you will know how many seconds it takes to drop, you can trap the line just before it hits bottom and feel the lead down to minimise the drop back of the rig, work well with braid but never tried it on mono.

Drop the right from the baitboat on a slack line, I think you will be surprised that it doesn't tangle.
However if the water is 20ft deep other than boilies and heavy particles your free bait will not drop in a straight line, pellets and small particles will drift away as there is always some undercurrent no matter how still.

So obviously if i drop my rig on a tight line from the baitboat the lead is going to swing back.
If I was fishing a shallow lake it wouldn't bother me but the lake I'm on averages 20ft with even deeper spots. Only one area is a bit shallower at 10ft.
If I drop my rig on a tight line in 20-30ft I would probably be 5-8ft away from the bait. The bait would also not be on the spot I want to fish. I suppose I could use a pva bag and just drop my rig on a slack line.
If I wanted to use a lead clip or heli safe then the only thing I could do to eliminate tangles that I can think of is to use a really stiff boom. Problem here is the lake is very silty so I'd prefer a softer rig material .
Is there an easy way people do this that I'm missing? Do you drive your rig out on its own then do another trip with the bait a few feet shorter?
