A old thread but none the less,,,forgive me for I have sinned

Mid this year I sold my original Shakespeare seat box, it had the Octoplus levelling feet, and accessories, all sorts, feeder arm etc etc, Along with it went my1st new pole, bought for me by my parents in law when I was 17, and 2 other poles given to me by members of the Northern Anglers Association canals match lads.

I think it was a 1989 vintage seat box, I bought it from a chap in Lymm, many years my senior and he showed me his shot gun collection when I went to pick it up. It saw many a good fish, a near 2lb Roach, then a record on the newly opened spring bank pool in Antrobus, and a near record golden orfe on Lymm Vale. It also saw a Perch to 3lb on the Dane Road stretch of the Bridgewater Canal, a very good fish for the time.

My head has recently thought of shore fishing and I'm not sure selling it was a good idea...why do we sell things just because they haven't been used in..err..decades

Recently got a Korda Hybrid Jacket very impressed with it. Only criticism would be that the sleeves are not windproof, I suppose if they were that would inhibit movement. Very well designed bit of kit.

I've got a wychwood solace foldall. It's a tackle bag with a built in bivvy table, unfortunately not made anymore so I don't know what I'll do when the times comes to replace it. They could've even taken it a stage further and converted it into a food bag with a prep table built in.

Gardner brought out a lot of decent gear back then. The needles, the hair loop tyer, the little yellow spods, the groundbait press.... the black shadow/black panther stuff was without a doubt the best looking bankware out at that time.

I still use mine regularly for day sessions.

Lost count of the times I've had to retrieve the foam seat pad from the lake on windy days though...

Beyonce - I gave mine to my little sister when she wanted to come fishing with me. Figured if she could cope with that she deserved to come along

I still have a set of three daiwa emblem 5000t on my 10ft rods, and have just got another two for my big water barbel rods. Nice and light and the cranking power is awesome.
With a qd conversion and a proper line clip they are excellent.

I mentioned the Gardner baiting needle earlier. It's excellent.

And wrt the Shakespeare seat box, I have the earlier original model made by Riva (in black) before Shakespeare took it over.

Got to be the old daiwa emblem 5000t.for me i think, granted not the prettiest of things but the amount of originals are still in use is remarkable, most relegate them to spod or marker work which is a testament to their durability. Oh and the retractable gardner braided hair needle, saved many a thumb that has

Ha.....Triggers broom did enter my mind as I was typing it.

However, the point is the arms and block are literally bombproof!

And the pole is too as you point out, just a little on the chunky side for me. I'll wait till the carbon one breaks, then bring it back into action.

That net is Trigger's broom, lad. it's not still going strong at all
But that NW pole, light and strength like scaffolding.

The old wychwood ruckman was great, I had one too. Great luggage and build quality.

Best designed kit for me would have to be North Western 42'' glass fibre landing net arms, and spreader block. Replaced the pole with a carbon one about 20 years ago, and the mesh numerous times (obviously), but the arms and block are still as good as new, after nearly 40 years use.

Also my Wychwood System Select rod holdall, and Ruckman rucksack from the mid 90's when they were British made (the one's with the PVC / rubber internal material for those that remember) - material, stitching, zips, still all going strong.

Despite having thousands of pounds of kit over the years free spirit, rods aqua bivvys etc etc itys always the simplest but most effective items that do it for me and with that in mind the humble ridge monkey toaster has to be right up there for me - small, lightweight, takes loads of abuse and has changed the game for me

After that a Power barrow - Ive had a few and would never go back to non powered

Don't know about what best designed means... looks, longevity etc it's all a bit subjective really but the stand out products for me have to be Harrison Ballistas in a range of test curves that Ive had for years and use regularly. A North Western landing net pole which is nearly 35 years old and still as functional and strong now as it was when I purchased it - doesn't get used so much nowadays but still a really good bit of kit. John Roberts butt grips - just a classic design that continues to work. Lockey's original stainless - classic design just a bit heavy for me nowadays. Emblem x 5500a's... reels that are god knows how old and still going strong, RX digitals - great alarms, stolen by my son... a stainless baiting needle that had survived 25 years, several insertions into my fingers, thumbs and a hospital extraction... think it was made by a company called Big Fish Adventure or something like that. Finally, still love GR60. Never could fault it...

As a designer I judge on usefulness vs aesthetic - in the words of Louis Sullivan / Frank Lloyd Wright 'form follows function' . . the two need to be intrinsically linked and in harmony to produce an effective product. Just because something 'functions' for decades does not equate to 'good' design IMO (although it does help the wallet etc); similarly a beautiful product that requires constant maintenance because it struggles to function could also be classed as poor design . . .

Best designed, these days it’s more a case of “Best copies” there’s been nothing new for years.
But what stands out in my own kit- which I use for all forms of fishing

Army Bergan: mine a long back 1989 and only now is the PVC inner coating starting to peel a bit, all stitching and Zips work as new, think it will see my life time out - well made with no "Time faults" to give it a limited life span.

JRC Solar DSi Alarms; must be around 23 years old now, they were only distributed by JRC they were actually made by a Czech Electronics company. Been 100% faultless, which you would expect with being a fully sealed unit with never having to change any batteries.

My own Modular set up: with not just Carp fishing, I use 2 and 3 Rod set ups, sometimes single bank sticks, sometimes as 2 or 3 Rod Pods , sometimes 6ft up high – I can build up as needs be on the bank with just a few parts, to suit my needs at will - but that's why I made it.

Struggling to think of anything else, as Rods, Reels, Bivvys, Brollies, Mats, Nets etc.... are all pretty much all the same, nothing stands out as “well designed” or ground breaking.

I spent a significant period chopping and changing my stuff when I was younger because I wasn't married at the time! The advantage of that was that I knew now what not to buy. However, there are a few items that I would purchase no matter how old they are...

Daiwa Linear Rods
Solar Fluro Bobbins
Chris Brown Buzz Bars (The Bank sticks need araldite on occasions)
Chris Brown Net - I still need to replace the one I stupidly sold
Daiwa Emblem Black Editions
Daiwa Emblem S
Fox Microns (Pre Facelift Models)

One item I wish I still had was the old Solar weigh sling with the yellow handles.

I think the general consensus is that "they don't make 'em like they used to"

Very few items that I would say are perfectly designed and manufactured.
Dymag MkII landing net, simply perfect.
Nash Groundhog brolly, many years of faultless use, equalling hundreds of nights.
Solar original slim fluro bobbins, simply perfect.
Solar original Grip Clips, again perfect for the job.

I can't be the only one looking at some of the replies and listed as old is stuff I still consider newish

Thought of a few more

Trevor Tomlin Carp King catty, only power cat I've ever bought and still going strong. They have a arm grip that goes into the handle and hooks over your arm so your wrist isn't taking all that force

FishTec bivvy light, the type that had 2 leds on leads...high tech that was...lol

Bankstick moles, any1 remember them? Big screw threaded hollow spike thing, hollow in the middle, drive it in put your bankstick in it, tighten thumbscrew.....solid.

Bushtec candle auto thing, think they're still made. (Where is that...hmm,)

Although arguably the Spider Spod (or Wolf X or whatever they now call it) has now surpassed that design with reliably opening regardless of how it hits the water and the ability to carry liquid.

The Gardner banksticks with two screws, not sure what they were called. Other than needing a respray they are still in tip top order.

Jag prolite snag bars, been using them week in week out for over 10 years now and they still look like new.

Also agree with the comments re esp vertex although I prefer the 12ft 3lb tc

Adding to that, the original fox x pod. Idk if they were the first with that design, but if so, great design, very stable, compact, durable, great product.

Original Nash titan all season bivvy. I no longer own it but it was groundbreaking stuff.
Fox Evo bivvy (still got it).
Trakker Tempest. Titan rip off??? But very good
Gardner baiting needle.
Sundridge heat control sleeping bag.

ESP Vertex distance rods - 12’9” in both 3.25 TC ( all rounders) and 3.75 ( long chuck).

Shimmy Technium 10,000XT - stupidly sold them and regretted it.

Fox RX Digitals - another stupid sale to get Delks which I regretted, but now very happy with my fully modded, radio remote stainless Nash Neville’s.

John Roberts rubber butt grips - getting on for 50 years old and still going strong

Most of my Aqua Union Jack badged luggage and bits.

I think the common link here is older, better built kit than some of the more recent offerings.

Hmmm. Decisions... 1st off not carp specific but it's my old bottle green Fox Specialist 12 ft 1lb tc . Can't recall last time I saw one of these for sale..either owners love theirs as much as I do mine or they were very limited production wise. From carp on the float to fitting the quiver top and perching it just WORKS!
Next is prob my original delks from @' 92. Still going and do what's needed.
Finally my Trangia U/L. OK I use the gas conversion 99%of the time but its compact, efficient lightweight and usually gets favourable comments from folk I don't know.

As a couple of people mentioned Solar tackle, I suddenly realised my original Solar U butt rests.
The foam liner has been replaced a number of times, but they must be from around 1994 time.

Shows how much we take some tackle for granted.

Got to split this into 2 as others have:-

That I still own old.....

Fox System Tackle box, original large must be 20 years old by now. It has the shallow 4 comps x 12, with individual opening sections. If the lid breaks replace that insert box, cant do that with the new ones. Oh the joy of dropping a 8 comp with hooks....never again

Tempest V2, so quick, so simple.

Defiant MPS Ti Trident & Original Solar Wordwide.

Solar indicators, quiverlock (steel & plastic) chains, dacron.

Original Fox Frontier, winter wrap & extension.

Not available, wore out, sold and regret and would buy again:-

Original Fox RX, why oh why did I get the NTXR.
FOX Evo Brolly.

The original Fox ruckbck made from Gortex, I had and sold 2 before I realised nothing would ever come close, so managed to buy another a few years ago that will go to the grave with me.
Jet boil mini mo - and I’ve had a few stoves.
Fox original low chair
Ace alarms
10k Tech the blue ones and once you fit carbon washers there is no better reel.
Solar yellow handle weigh sling
Weighmate digital scales
AI airframe shelter

But for pure design point of view, and my style of fishing the Fox barrow feels made just for me. I can be fishing in 10 mins and still have the barrow fully packed.

For me, probably my hybrid compact patriot/singlez pod which I put together by accident and also a 20 year old greys platinum 12ft rod quiver which has a hood along with individual sleeves. The best rod protection I have ever seen.

Shelter wise the Tempest Brolly once they put vents in the back.
Luggage wise I like the size and design of the Thinking Anglers Rucksack
Defiant MPS titanium bank sticks with the stainless coach bolt tips.
Chris Brown 6+3’ net
Solar needle that sh*ts bait stops.
Nevs on Nev swan necks
Trangia 27 cook kit probably takes the Swedish biscuit though..

I gave my nephew my Quattro pod, will miss that too I'm sure. Agree on the Solar back rests. Never found a catapult I could get on with, throwing stick for me,although now have to use after dusk as flying rats make it pointless in daylight.

I am not a cricket fan no. I do occasionally watch the ashes, but that would be it. But I will read it thank you, as I like knowledge about things that I struggle to understand.

I do know from my own life, that holding onto the past is incredibly counter productive. You cannot change the past, only ever the future. So there really is not much point worrying about it.

I do not want to derail another thread, I will read it tomorrow thank you. It’s only 18:30 here. Already pitch black. Been dark an hour. Off out on the razzle dazzle later

Not sure if you are a cricket fan Mark, but read an interesting article on Mitchell Johnson’s career on the BBC pages over the weekend. He struggled with mental health issues with drops in form, eventually becoming a figure of ridicule for the England fans despite his talent.

Then he heard the ‘let it go’ song from the Disney film his daughter was watching and took it as his mantra whenever things got on top. He then went on become man of the series and go down in history as one of the most destructive fast bowlers in Ashes history. Interesting read if you’re on the beach.

Perhaps stupidly I've moved all these on but they've been replaced with equally well designed replacements . . .in order of design brilliance

1 - Fox RX Digitals - 20yrs bullet proof service replaced by Delkim TXIDs
2 - Trakker Ultralite - brilliant, versatile 1man shelter replaced by Aqua Ultralite 100
3 - Fox Quattro Pod - solid, versatile pod replaced by Jag Super Compact Adjustable

Primus kettle - still going strong
Fox Digital Scales (originals) - still going strong
Atomic T Pult - still going strong

Other honourable mentions - Carptechnics SB3 / Tournament 5000Ts / Stow bobbins / Delkim line clips / Solar P1 backrests / Trakker NXG luggage / Rigmarole CamH20

More recent kit - Ridgemonkey Choppa / Nash Power Metro / Korda Kontainer system

Best designed kit I’ve ever had would be the spools on original long cast bait runners from Shimano. Allowing me to fish 550m out, when everyone else can only fit 270 yards on their Tournies

Solar SP bed chair. Simply brilliant. Heavy, bulky, but jeez it’s a great nights kip.

I had a lovely day since our conversation this morning Nick. I hope you did too. That was early this morning. For someone who is intimidated, you sure can hold onto things. I am going to buy some Delkim ST online right now this very second. Right now. If I agree to do that. Can we just shake hands over the internet and let this go now? ❤️❤️

One is most definitely not designed as fishing tackle, but is luggage related, my 120l British Army Bergen. I used it for probably 10years.
Actually still alive, but now updated to a Molle rucksack, which I think in terms of ease of use and pockets is even better.

In terms of fishing tackle, I'd struggle to come up with an item as I get the wanderlust and urge to change, although the best lasting item is my Delkim ST's which were from about 2000. A good design that lasted, without needing to be updated.

Theres a few bits, but like you, I gave one bit away to my neighbours son as he was starting out, but immediately regretted it. Mine was a chub vantage framed carryall. It had a tubular aluminium frame so wasnt too heavy, and an aluminium lid that flipped over to make a bivvy table, or, it could be lft the right way up with a padded flap that went over the top turning it into a make-do seat. Had levelling legs so could get it dead flat. The front was perfectly sized for a large fbox, and the front pocket concerteanered out so you could get access to the inside of the carryall without disturbing what was on the table top. Was the perfect height next to the bed-chair as well. If I could find an as-new one Id buy it in a heart beat.

Next my Coleman exponent pan set, its a frying pan, large and smaller saucepan, and my primus kettle fits perfectly inside the lot, making a lovely compact cooking/brew kit, and theres two lids as well. They stopped making these too, and like the first item, if I found some Id buy them as spares in a heart beat. They did two sizes, the one I have is the larger of the two.

Jag stage stands - awesome bit of kit, and design wise they have a built in screwdriver so you dont even need to take one of those either - a well thought out bit of kit, perhaps a little heavy in 316, but will out last me thats for sure.

Cobb cooker - brilliant bit of kit for the would be bank side chef - you can cook anything on it - even a full-on roast dinner.

I recently gave a load of my carp gear to my nephew as he is really getting into the hobby now. One of the items I gave him was my free spirit rock steady jumbo holdall. I have to admit of all the stuff I gave him this was the only one I demurred over. For me it is one of the best designed carp fishing items I have ever owned.
Made me think, what is the best designed bit of kit you have bought.
