Really sad news. RIP. Almost 60 years since I first saw him at Horton Kirby, not sure if he was older than me, I am now 74.

Nice bloke. Met him a few times at KAPS in Snodland.
We were both in perfect realisation at which level of competence we were at and yet he never knowingly looked down on me.
He even used to tell me where the fish were to see if I would get off the bedchair 😆.

In reply to Post #36 Penny for his thoughts now

In reply to Post #1 Last saw him on the bank around 2010, two rods out sitting on an old chair on Alders Trout Lake.

A true gent is, Jim.
Having met him on a couple of occasions, on one of the Kent venues he did his '9-5' angling on. Having the rather special moment of him kindly photographing a carp for me too! I couldn't help but mention in my own little joke afterwards to him, knowing full well his pet hate of carp lingo! How the lake was 'Fishing it's head off, Jim' - ' Get a wanger on the banger old chap'... to the utter dismay written all over his face!
He fished exactly the same way as he wrote about 'simplicity subtlety', with none of the silliness of today's carping brigade.
I truly wish him well and saddens me to learn of his health problems.

In reply to Post #39 Still think he was over thinking it.. but then again we dont all have to agree on everything do we. Even though the fella was and still is a bit of a legend to me.

Jim Gibbinson's articles were the first thing I read in any CarpWorld.
Very thought provoking, with an undercurrent of humour, and almost perfectly written. I bet any typos were not his error!
It was really sad to hear he had cancer, then giving up fishing for other health reasons.

In reply to Post #38 I think he might of been over thinking it on some tubing being repellent to fish
not the stuff we use today ! the early stuff was terrible and the chemical smell was so strong he was right !

I think he might of been over thinking it on some tubing being repellent to fish.
But his ideas on using zip type inline leads for fishing in heavy weed or lily pads. Might surprise the need to drop the leads at any cost brigade.
In reply to Post #32 Think it was advertised as no tangle tubing and he called it no carp tubing...whatever it struck a chord with me and I have always soaked tubing, especially tungsten tubing in water for a couple of weeks before use, and still do today.

In reply to Post #34 His take on the current carp 'scene' was always thought-provoking
Penny for his thoughts now

In reply to Post #23 Remember it well 1976 on BBC2

"Let Us Talk" was usually the first article in Carpworld each moth. Regrdless of where it fell, I always turned to Jim before all else. His take on the current carp 'scene' was always thought-provoking, sometimes scathing but always with an undercurrent of humour I met Jim on many ocassions at various expos around Europe and always enjoyed his company. I am sorry to hear of his ill health. I know how he feels...old age is a bugger. Here's Jim with Alan Atkins in the background with Bill Cottam, Ray DaleSmith and myself at the huge anual Genk carp xxpo in the early-90s.

In reply to Post #32 i still do this with all rubber beads etc, i leave in a dish of water from the lake for a week or two. Jim was/is my schoolboy angling hero along with Phil Smith & John Sidle. I met him once at Mercers Pk, he did not disappoint.

In reply to Post #30 I can remember him writing about tubing and the chemical smell that it gave off and that he used to hang new tubing in his garage weeks before using it to let the smell dissipate.

Its thanks to Jim that I have spent so much time on the bank to this day since his articles in the 60's. Think I have a folder full of them when he wrote in the now sadly defunct magazine "Angling". I can always recall in one article he wrote many years ago somewhere, and with being an English teacher, his hatred for the use of the word "Edge" in Carp fishing. There is no place for it, its meaning does not fit in with anything carp related. ie, someone has an "Edge" over others, a bait has an "Edge" over other baits etc.

When carp fishing was about a passion for big old carp and it really meant something, nothing else
What is it now, a get out of life “mong” excuse, where it’s all about the £s, lbs and fame and fortune, when greed took over your pastime and everybody is trying to make a living or scrounge something from it. Sad ****s

In reply to Post #27 Agree completely. First rate writer who has made a huge contribution over many years.
It would indeed be wonderful to hear him on a podcast.

My favourite carp angling writer. Intelligent, unafraid to be different, and very successful. I always read his article first in Carpworld.
If he were to be well enough to do a podcast it would be great. (I used the subjunctive in his honour )

In reply to Post #24 Yeah, think it was back a way though. Maybe early 80's?

In reply to Post #23 Never seen that. Was it a tv show?

I remember watching him competing for the golden maggot on the fishing race back in the day.
I think I recall them fishing for piranha in a zoo at one point.

In reply to Post #21 Maybe you could do a split one with him next time Micky???
That would be a fantastic listen I’m sure.
Time to call in some favours !!

In reply to Post #16 Spot on....and big water carp inspired me on the bigger waters mate. Sad to hear he cant do what he loves anymore. A podcast if possible would be a great idea.

I met Jim at a BCSG do at Kingston College must of been late60s early 70s ?
Very nice bloke with a good sense of humour that was a great time to be in Carp fishing
None of the shyte we have today

I used to read a lot of his work. Still use the line aligner. Didn't know he was unwell. Wish him all the best.

In reply to Post #16 A lot of the pics were at my fav lake too.....

In reply to Post #15 Even though he might not fish anymore. Maybe he might be well enough to do a short podcast. There’s so many anglers that hold him dear due to his fantastic writing. I’m sure it would be very well received. Even better maybe he could do a short Korda podcast and with their reach they might be able to help raise awareness or raise some money towards Parkinson’s research.
Gravel Pit Carping = 90s angling bible.

In reply to Post #11 Very sad news. I have always enjoyed his writings - both his knowledge and his great sense of humour. I wish him all the best.

In reply to Post #11 Thanks for this, Chris. I wish Jim well at this phase of his life. A fine man.

In reply to Post #12 New his way round the written word. He was an English teacher by profession.
In reply to Post #11 He was a brilliant writer. One of the few true legends.
In reply to Post #8 Jim is now an ex-angler ( his words ) due to the effects of Parkinson's and a heart problem which have made it impossible to go fishing. Very sad.
Was also the first thing I would read in Carpworld when he contributed.
In reply to Post #6 "I also remember he only did day sessions,"
Yep. By his own admission he was reluctant to fish at night as the darkness unnerved him.
In reply to Post #7 Great allrounder 2 , loved his pike stuff
In reply to Post #1 I believe Jim is quiet unwell and is unable to fish anymore. Used to love his writings in Carpworld. One of the first anglers to pioneer fishing for carp in the winter.
In reply to Post #6 Wasn’t it called let us talk in Carpworld ? Jim has a great sense of humour and his articles used to crack me up at times.
His books are great as well Gravel pit carping was my bible for a few years.
Used to really enjoy his articles and thought processes towards angling, one thing I just remembered, was his opinions on reel seats,Jim's rods had the reel seats 'upside down, only to Jim they were the correct way up!!
Never did understand that ..I also remember he only did day sessions, but probably wrong,I miss those old skool writers, especially when Carpworld was the 'Bible'..probably why Ken and BBs Confessions are my favourite writers.

In reply to Post #1 Great angler , hope he still does a bit

Does anyone know what Jim's doing these days?
I'm a great admirer of his and used to eagerly await anything he wrote but I was just wondering if he still dabbles.
I did hear that he was unwell a few years back so maybe that's taken it's toll on him.
TIA. Would be nice to know..............
