In reply to Post #24 When I was keen I found great results using the method feeder when using a good percentage of ground Bombay mix, may not be suitable to put in a base mix but food for thought.

In reply to Post #21 redmoor.net is cheaper and free delivery when you spend over £30 so I tend to stock up on dried fruit and nuts in the kitchen at the same time

In reply to Post #17 Check out Rob Maylin's early books, he used spices in his mixes years ago.

In reply to Post #11 i added the spices last night with the hydro, what a difference its made to the smell of the bait.
going to try different levels of inclusion over the next few weeks, i need to find some fenugreek as the lady in my local Asian supermarket told me there is a local shortage

In reply to Post #14 A theory of less is more is a good base for most things. Trial and error and a clear lake to watch the carp is what we need! Never be afraid to experiment!! I have made many many cock ups but also found a few things I wouldn't make a bait without! And good luck with it all

In reply to Post #13 I think its because I'm newly into making my own bait that it's really hard not to go mad and add everything and stupid levels! Perhaps I just need to get it out of my system...

In reply to Post #12 Just remember some spices are not very soluble, another good reason to lower the quantities. Fenugreek.....lovely stuff, paprika is good too 😉

In reply to Post #11 Have you used the BAF spice mix? That smells REALLY nice. Not sure what all the 7 spices are but paprika and chilli powder are definitely two of them...

In reply to Post #8 Thinking about it I used to use it in a mix 10-15 years ago and that was a basic mix. When I took it out testers seemed to complain with a drop in catch results. However with my more recent mixes (younger than 10 years old) I never noticed a difference so took it out but then these mixes have kelp in which I believe is high in glutamate naturally.
I have recently added it to a bait glug, when I put this glug mixture neat in my pond (only a few ml mixed with a little water) the carp grub around for longer if its got MSG (and Tuna Hydro powder) in it. No idea if the fish in the lake respond the same as I haven't fished with it yet!

In reply to Post #9 I've been playing about with it the last couple of years, not noticed much difference with or without it, although I've barely carp fished in those years to really get a true comparison as yet

In reply to Post #8 I have in the past, not currently though as I am far from convinced it is needed.

In reply to Post #5 Pete have you used MSG in your mixes?

In reply to Post #5 will defiantly try both. was just a thought regarding the hydro in the other thread.
going to try a few mixes at different spice levels this afternoon.

In reply to Post #4 Looks a good start point mate. Keep the hydro in as well, as smurf says they are both very different things, and for me a hydro is as important as the spices themselves,if not more so

In reply to Post #4 Spices can be very variable from supplier to supplier. I get most of mine from Redmoor.net and have done for many years, quality and price have always been perfect from them.
I currently have a mix of Paprika (2 types), Chili, Fenugreek, Garlic and Turmeric that I make up with spices from them. I use between 40 and 75g per kg of this spice mix per Kg of basemix. Even at the low levels it is very noticeable in the finished bait.
I have just worked backwards and if I am using 40g of the spice mix per kg then that means I am using this much per kg of basemix:
28g Paprika
4g Chili
4g Fenugreek
2g Garlic
2g Turmeric
So all at very low levels You can use more but more is not always better.
And I still add my hydro liquids even with the above in the bait. The liquids and the spices work in totally different ways in your bait so try and use both

In reply to Post #2 how does
3g garlic powder
5g hot chili
5g paprika
5g fenugreek
per egg sound?
ive dropped the krill hydro from my mix and im not convinced the levels included at 40ml per kg will make a difference. id sooner use spice instead.

In reply to Post #1 I can certainly vouch for garlic, fenugreek and paprika. All have worked for me individually but combining them seems to be best.
I have read good reports on others including chilli, cumin, cinnamon and cayenne pepper but not used them myself...yet😉

In reply to Post #1 Spices are awesome additions to bait, way better than any artificial flavours imo. The world is your oyster, and a bit of experimenting will be needed to get your levels right. Literally play about and see what you come up with. Some you can use at far higher levels than others too. Stuff like garlic I found lower levels to be best, max of about 3g per egg, whereas fenugreek for instance double that and more works a treat.
